Story Time Is Over

History is always written by the winners.  Native Americans know it, African Americans know it, Palestinians know it, working class people in every country in this world know it, every gay man or woman who has ever lived knows it.  Everyone who has ever been beaten into submission by the power of armies, by the power of economic might, by the power of entrenched religion, entrenched conformity, entrenched bigotry, entrenched conservative ideology knows it . . .  

History is always written by the winners. When two cultures clash, the loser is obliterated, and the winner writes the history books, books which glorify their own cause and disparage the conquered foe.  As Napoleon once said, ‘What is history, but a fable agreed upon?’

And what is Obama’s healthcare reform bill, but a fable agreed upon?  

By Reid.  By Pelosi.  By the Democrats.  By the reciters of fables at Daily Kos.  Check out the recommended Fable List there and behold all of the happy endings.  Hansel and Gretel follow the trail of crumbs to incremental change and everyone lives happily ever after.  Snow White ate the Poison Option and fell into a purist coma, but Prince Charming kissed her and she awoke in beautiful Healthcare Reform Land, where everyone, even the Three Bears and Three Little Pigs and Rumpelstiltskin and Pinocchio and most of the Seven Dwarfs got to take a first step towards having affordable health insurance.

That’s one small step for the Three Bears and their friends, one giant leap for the health insurance industry.

But I digress . . .

It doesn’t matter when you check that place out, they’re always off to see the Wizard. Everyone is dancing down the Yellow Brick Road to the Emerald City of More and Better Democrats, where Steny the Tin Man will get a heart, Harry the Cowardly Lion will get courage, and Barack the Scarecrow will finally get a fucking brain. Whatever you do, don’t tell them they’re on a Yellow Brick Road to nowhere, the big bad wolves of Kos Communications Inc. will huff and puff and blow your house down, clean slate or not.            

Happy endings at Daily Fables are only for the true and faithful believers in Humpty Dumpty.   I’m not sure what they’ll do when Humpty falls off that Wall of Centrism, and all of Rahm’s horses and all of Rahm’s men can’t put him back together again, but if their past attitudes are any indication, far left fringe Naderites, Docudharma deadenders, radical Teabagger empowering firedogging firedoggers, Cindy Sheehan worshipping attention whore purists, and instant gratification political neophytes like us will get the blame.

Since those Pied Pipers of two-party system politics like fables so much, they should read The Emperor Has No Clothes, they might learn something.  Until they acknowledge the complicity of Obama and the Democrats in war crimes, Wall Street crimes, and the systematic shredding of the Constitution, I will not be civil to them.  They deserve no civility, they deserve nothing but contempt.  

What is the defense budget, but a fable agreed upon?  By the politicians, by the generals, by the profiteers of the Military Industrial Complex.   Well, contrary to that fable they tell every day on NBC, ABC, CBS, CNN, and FOX, America doesn’t have a defense budget, it has a conquest budget.  America doesn’t have news broadcasts, it doesn’t have political debate forums, it doesn’t have investigative journalism.

It has Story Time.

Story Time with Brian Williams, Story Time with Katie Couric, Story Time with Wolf Blitzer, sponsored by America’s wonderful corporations and filled with fables from beginning to end.  

What is the official version of 9/11, but a fable agreed upon?  What is “free market capitalism”, but a fable agreed upon?  What is “American democracy” in the 21st century, but a fable agreed upon?  

So dark the con of man . . .

But so bright the light of truth.

If enough people keep it shining, if enough people seek the truth and aren’t afraid to tell it, if enough people turn away from rigid ideology and corporate propaganda and religious dogma, if enough people finally understand that the darkness will consume us all if we don’t shine the light of truth on the dark cons of Wall Street, the dark cons of Washington, the dark cons of the corporate war machine, corporate drug profits machine, corporate oil profits machine, corporate fuck-everyone-and-then-fuck-them-again machine.    

Progressives have a bloodline.  It reaches back to the ancient Greeks, who founded democracy and were guided by reason.  We are their heirs, we are the heirs of Pericles, of Marcus Aurelius, of Voltaire, of Rousseau and Locke and Jefferson.  We are the heirs of Roosevelt and Kennedy and McGovern and Wellstone.  

We have a code.  But it’s not hidden, it’s not complex, there’s no need to decipher it, it clearly proclaims who we are and what we stand for . . .

We are the people, we stand for democracy, we are democracy, we are the only reality left in this country.  It’s time to turn to the last page, it’s time to close that Book of Fables and toss it into the trash where it belongs.  Story Time is over.  Reality Time is here.  We can overcome the power of armies, the power of economic might, the power of entrenched religion, entrenched conformity, entrenched bigotry, and entrenched conservative ideology because their power is derived from nothing but fables.  Expose the fables, expose the false foundation of their power.  Keep doing that, keep doing it and their power will crumble.

They have fables.  

We have the truth.  

So keep telling it.  Keep telling it and speaking it and thinking it and breathing it.
