Whether you’re watching the tube, reading a book or thinking about affairs of state, you can make a difference. Here are just a few of the appropriately painless ways to save energy (yours, of course) and the earth:
* Use rechargeable batteries in all of your remote controls and portable music players. Americans throw away 2.5 billion batteries a year. Once landfilled, they can corrode and leach toxic chemicals into the earth and groundwater. Rechargeables significantly reduce both waste and the need for new batteries to be manufactured.
* Reuse old videotapes instead of buying new ones. After all, how many times can you watch Cousin Vicky get married? {This must be old!}
* Pick up beer and soda by the ring carrier, not by the cardboard case. Can for can, you’ll be using 92% less material. More good news for the environment: The rings now break open when you remove the cans, making them safer for wildlife.
* Buy the biggest bags of snacks you can. Chip for chip, larger sizes use less packaging than smaller sizes. If, for some strange reason you have any left, reseal the bag with a chip clip.
* And if you must leave the house, travel in packs to save fuel. Carpool. Take the bus. Ride the train. You might even try walking or riding your bike. But take it slow. Remember, haste makes waste.
