What is World Peace and Prayer Day?

Following the birth of a White Buffalo Calf in 1994, the Keeper of the White Buffalo Calf Pipe for the Lakota, Dakota, Nakota Nations, Arvol Looking Horse, was directed to honor the Four Directions with ceremony on June 21st. According to Lakota Star Knowledge, the birth of Miracle, a female white buffalo, signaled a time of earth changes and the coming of the mending of the Hoop of All Nations. The Summer Solstice is said to be a powerful time to pray for peace and harmony among all Living Beings. Grandmother Earth’s gifts, the air, water plant, animal and rock nations must be allowed to heal if we are to live in harmony with Her.

All Nations recognize Sacred Sites as Places to gather or perform private ceremony. For countless generations these Sites were honored, cherished and strengthened through ceremony. All religions will have their own religious sites in their own country. For example, in Jerusalem, there are many religious sites that are visited daily. However, some people who may be unable to visit these sites, can still be there with the help of online prayer request services. You can send your message to anyone you want to, and it will be then placed at the holy site of your choice. Every religion and country will have their own sites like Jerusalem’s. This can be any type of prayer whether you are asking for peace and love, or praying prayers to get rid of bad spirits in your home or in your life. Whatever your prayer, God will listen.

For four years, beginning in 1996, Chief Looking Horse honored June 21st by offering ceremony in the Four Directions. He traveled to Gray Horn Butte in Wyoming (aka Devils Tower), the Cree Nation in Canada, Pipestone Quarry in Minnesota and to Costa Rica. People of all the Nations of the globe were invited to offer ceremony at Sacred Sites. Thousands around the world have responded and began honoring their local Sites. Following the Wopila (Thank-you ceremony) in the “Heart of Everything That Is,” the Sacred Black Hills in 2000, it was decided that Chief Looking Horse must once again offer ceremony to the Four Directions of the globe. He began in Ireland in 2001, South Africa 2002, Australia 2003, and Japan in 2004. In 2005 the ceremony returned to the Black Hills to offer another Wopila on Turtle Island (North America) to complete his commitment to bring about awareness.

World Peace and Prayer Day was founded in 1996 in the Black Hills of South Dakota by Chief Arvol Looking Horse, 19th generation keeper of the sacred White Buffalo Calf Pipe of the Sioux Nation. Arvol Looking Horse was led by a vision to honor sacred sites and to invite all nations and all faiths to do the same, to heal our relationship with our mother, the Earth. World Peace and Prayer Day is held annually on the summer solstice, a powerful day to pray for peace among all living beings.

All Nations, All Faiths, All Species, One Prayer!

We are the watchers. We are the witnesses. We see what has gone before. We see what happens now, at this dangerous moment in human history. We see what’s going to happen, what will surely happen unless we come together – we, the Peoples of all Nations – to restore peace, harmony and balance to the Earth, our Mother…

“You yourself are the one who must decide. You alone and only you – can make this crucial choice. Each of us is put here in this time and this place to personally decide the future of humankind. Know that you yourself are essential to this World. Believe that! Understand both the blessing and the burden of that. You yourself are desperately needed to save the soul of this World. Did you think you were put here for something less? In a Sacred Hoop of Life, where there is no beginning and no ending!

****** A Great Urgency ****** To All World Religious and Spiritual Leaders ******

My Relatives,

Time has come to speak to the hearts of our Nations and their Leaders. I ask you this from the bottom of my heart, to come together from the Spirit of your Nations in prayer.

We, from the heart of Turtle Island, have a great message for the World; we are guided to speak from all the White Animals showing their sacred color, which have been signs for us to pray for the sacred life of all things. As I am sending this message to you, many Animal Nations are being threatened, those that swim, those that crawl, those that fly, and the plant Nations, eventually all will be affect from the oil disaster in the Gulf.

The dangers we are faced with at this time are not of spirit. The catastrophe that has happened with the oil spill which looks like the bleeding of Grandmother Earth, is made by human mistakes, mistakes that we cannot afford to continue to make.

I asked, as Spiritual Leaders, that we join together, united in prayer with the whole of our Global Communities. My concern is these serious issues will continue to worsen, as a domino effect that our Ancestors have warned us of in their Prophecies.

I know in my heart there are millions of people that feel our united prayers for the sake of our Grandmother Earth are long overdue. I believe we as Spiritual people must gather ourselves and focus our thoughts and prayers to allow the healing of the many wounds that have been inflicted on the Earth. As we honor the Cycle of Life, let us call for Prayer circles globally to assist in healing Grandmother Earth (our Unc’I Maka).

We ask for prayers that the oil spill, this bleeding, will stop. That the winds stay calm to assist in the work. Pray for the people to be guided in repairing this mistake, and that we may also seek to live in harmony, as we make the choice to change the destructive path we are on.

As we pray, we will fully understand that we are all connected. And that what we create can have lasting effects on all life.

So let us unite spiritually, All Nations, All Faiths, One Prayer. Along with this immediate effort, I also ask to please remember June 21st, World Peace and Prayer Day/Honoring Sacred Sites day. Whether it is a natural site, a temple, a church, a synagogue or just your own sacred space, let us make a prayer for all life, for good decision making by our Nations, for our children’s future and well-being, and the generations to come.

Onipikte (that we shall live),

Chief Arvol Looking Horse

19th generation Keeper of the Sacred White Buffalo Calf Pipe

The calm acceptance of Christ’s death sentence and his exhortation on the cross:  Forgive them they know not what they do.  and

The Christ that said to the roaring waters:  BE STILL or knocked over the stalls of the money changers or changed the water into wine.

Frankly, I like the exhortation BE STILL to the elements of the earth.

I have no answer for myself – as I said it is a constant struggle – no matter your religious or humanist or philosophical bent – isn’t it the same for you.

Mostly, I’m angry lately – very angry.  This is beyond sad, as it does me little physical good and even less spiritual good for my own soul.  So, the greedy ruling class can be said to be killing us spiritually as well as physically.

  1. in a prayer for peace and change…

  2. Thank you for your beautiful thoughts, but, most importantly, what you and each of us can do on our parts.

Right now, however, though we can send prayers to our “mother,” I think we must hold onto our anger — we must keep the pressure on-going for BP and all responsible parties to CLEAN UP the “mother.”

I think we need also to call the President’s office and our Congresspeople and tell them that the workers must be provided with face masks, at the least, or respirators, otherwise, we’re going to have a lot of sick people, who are doing the work on the beaches down there to clean up.  And, frankly, why should they be exposed in the first place.  Why can’t they use bulldozers to skim off several inches off the sands and then haul away to wherever it is they take contaminants?

    “Whirled peas”?  Very clever!

    i’m honoured

  3. …as well this year.  The honoring of the birth of Guru Rinpoche in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition occurs on the 10th day of the 5th month (Tibetan month system).  It is an especially auspicious day.  So I think the coincidence with Chief Avrol Looking Horse’s cpommemorative day is important.

Thank you, Ria-D for posting this.

  4. Would my Indian name be Argues with Spirit Guides.

  5. FireDogLake’s petition to BP insisting they provide respirators and the proper equipment for the clean-up workers along the Gulf coast.  BP is threatening to fire anyone who wears their own bought masks or whatever — seems BP is worried about its PR image (WTF?).

Tell BP: Oil Cleanup Workers Need Respirators and Safety Training
