You just gotta love Ol’ Barrel Hair. If you haven’t been hip to it lately, Governor Perry of Texas decided to try and take Texas back to the medieval era of knowledge with his theocratic school book revisionary board.
Unfortunately for Perry, the Dimestore Cowboy of Succession screwed the pooch on the Texas budget, which by our Constitution, must be even steven at the end of each fiscal year. And even though we are one of the richest states, the Hot Tub Governor’s constant reach arounds for his closest corporate friends has bankrupted the Lone Star.

Now it appears that Texas kids will have to glean those points from supplementary materials rather than new textbooks that were supposed to arrive in the fall. The state normally replaces textbooks on a rotating basis every 10 years. With Texas facing a budget shortfall of at least $11 billion in 2011, the money isn’t going to be there. Textbooks covering the new science standards would have cost $400 million, and the Legislature is already expecting a bill of $888 million for textbooks already ordered.
The Texas Education Agency had proposed to provide science supplements for high schools only at a cost of about $17 million. Instead, board members approved supplements for science classes from fifth grade through high school. They have no idea how much the supplements will cost.
Nice budgeting there folks, $400 million versus $17 million? Yeah, I’d call that a slight cost overrun. Who knew rewriting history would be so expensive.
Of course, Barrel Hair of Brokeback Mountain, who burned down the governor’s mansion because he couldn’t quit his love in the governor’s hot tub, just can’t figure out the figuring of the budget:

But as the state’s budget shortfall widens-to as much as $18 billion, or about 20% of the next two-year budget, according to the state legislature’s latest analysis released earlier this month-critics are complaining that Mr. Perry’s policies have left the state with little room to reduce spending.“There is no way that they will be able to come up with $18 billion in cuts,” said Eva DeLuna Castro, a senior budget analyst at the Center for Public Policy Priorities, a nonprofit that advocates for low-income Texans. “They would have to shut down our prison system.”
“Our great fear is that they will dump a bunch of unfunded mandates on counties,” said Elna Christopher, a spokeswoman for the Texas Association of Counties.
This is actually how Perry pulled off his “economic miracle” over the last 10 years. When he screwed the pooch like it was his secretary of state, he would dump the budget overage on counties.
Now in order to get his precious, precious theocratic textbooks printed, he will have to dump even more mandates on local counties to hide his shame of incompetence.
The funniest part is that is The Stupid of Barrel Hair Perry that got us into the mess, both economic an culturally with the textbooks, now Perry says his stupid will get us out.
And that, my friends, is just plain stupid.
To bad we don’t have a Democrat in the race who could actually take advantage of this, besides sending out strongly worded emails.
