They displace too many native or less competitive species. But assuming I’m looking at a herring gull there, it still breaks my heart. Not one of God’s creatures deserves a fate like that – unless they are on the board of BP or an executive level employee there. Throw in some MMS enablers, too.

…a few times during these past several weeks, I have felt myself encased in oil, like this bird and the others, the pelicans I’ve seen. I can feel how it becomes impossible to fly, how movement becomes difficult, impossible – weighted with oil.
It feels like a metaphor for what is happening to many in America, as jobs have dried up, income has evaporated, and the mobility which these provide is lessened.
I identify with that white bird encased in oil — and it’s stoic acceptance and silence.
