my interpretation of a mandate:

November 2006: the electorate votes in Democrats as its way of saying NO to George W. Bush.

… we Democrats celebrate.

Post November 2006, poll after poll expresses the tangible, palpable anger citizens harbor towards George W. Bush’s policies and administration. Poll after poll says NO to Bush.

Citizens giving Congress its lowest approval in history for its refusal to say no to Bush says NO to Bush.

High ranking military retire in order to come out, in public, to say NO to Bush.

perhaps it’s the speaking in ancient Sumerian that’s confused Congress. now. let’s try it in English:

WE WANT CONGRESS TO say no TO GEORGE W. BUSH…  

We, the majority of the people of these United States, want Congress to say NO

-to Bush’s foreign policy (or lack thereof)

– to Bush’s judicial appointments (a hack on the bench is worth two scholars ruling against you)

– to Bush’s appointment of AG (oops, registered that one a little too late)

– to Bush’s FISA (because he only wants the Iraqis to be free)

– to Bush’s tax cuts (we didn’t really need that bridge)

– to Bush’s version of Medicare (those old enough to need it will die soon anyway)

– to Bush’s version of college loans (education only produces those damned liberals)

– to Bush’s version of environmental responsibility (no ice, open shipping lanes)

– to Bush’s war-like rhetoric towards Iran (what can i say about this that hasn’t already been said)

– to Bush’s desire to go to war with ANY country (see war-like rhetoric towards Iran)

– to Bush’s war in Iraq (see war-like rhetoric towards Iran)

– to Bush’s refusal to end the war in Iraq (what war? this is a freedom crusade)

– to Bush’s war against the middle class (let’s bring back indentured servant status)

– to Bush’s financial buddies and their predatory lending practices (see war against middle class)

– to Bush’s stance on the death penalty (because criminals have a right to an afterlife in hell only)

– to Bush’s No Child Left Behind (equal opportunity dismantling of meaningful education)

– to Bush’s Healthy Forests (or cutting down every bloody tree you can bloody find)

– to Bush’s Clean Skies (no pollution controls necessary, because god keeps the skies clean)

– to Bush’s authorizing torture (this one isn’t funny)

– to Bush’s not forcing his minions to comply with Congressional subpoenas (do we really want to give Harriet Miers a forum?)

– to Bush’s attempt to theocratize our government and legislate the Bible (leave the regulation up to God please)

– to Bush’s dismantling of the Constitution of the United States of America (it’s just a piece of paper)

– and, in general, to George W. Bush’s policies, ideas, lack of ideas, his tenure as president of this country, his smirk, his disrespect for the world at large, his smugness, his cronies and minions……..

Oh. wait. The complicity part.  After a year of capitulation, denials, inaction, empty promises, and more of the same as Sen. Reid prepares to give George Bush the FISA Bush wants, I’d have to conclude that the Democratic leadership has been aware of and in on the last seven years. The Democrats are not stupid. Or afraid. They’ve had the perfect opportunity to pull past Bush and pull into sharp focus the damage and depravity swirling around this awful man’s adminstration…

But the Dems are cowards. They’ve allowed Bush to remain fuzzier than his math.

The Democrats are selfish, not stupid. They think we’re the ones who are stupid and expendable and lowly. Yeah. We’re just a bunch of expendable beings. Barely people. No faces. No families. No pain. Just a moving mass upon which to feed and suck dry of all assets, resources, hope, vitality.

So here’s what I wish for: that Dennis Kucinich becomes president and that the big Democratic guns all lose their seats. I hope that in 2010, we are able to energize net and grass roots candidates to serve our country and NOT corporations. I want my country back. It’s just that simple.
