The Locker Room

So, in the AL, 3 teams have already clinched their playoff spots, with the Angels and Indians already clinching their respective divisions. The Red Sox also have a ticket to the after-party, though the Yankees are only 1.5 games back. It is beyond the mechanizations of my helmet-holder to understand why the Yankees haven’t statistically clinched a spot yet….but so say the websites. It looks like a lock to me.
The NL has a wider range of possibilities and no teams have clinched yet. Right now the Mets, Cubs, and D-backs are sitting atop their respective divisions, but none are more than 3.5 games up on their nearest rival. The Mets are the only of these playing today (probably right now, depending on when you read this). The wildcard race is also tight, and any of the current division leaders could end up in that mix, though it doesn’t seem likely. It looks like a runoff between San Diego and Philly; San Diego has a half-game lead and a game in hand (which they play tonight).
(edit/update: the mets lost to washington 13-4; San Fran is up 7-4 on San Diego in the 5th)

The Locker Room
Welcome sports fans!
It is my fondest wish and the deepest desire of my heart to see the Flyers win a Stanley Cup have a weekly sports discussion essay. While I’m not well-versed in every sport at every level, I would love for us to have a forum to discuss professional, college, amateur, and even our own involvement in local sports, as well as the personalities that people them. And while I’m clearly posting such an essay right at this very minute (or, have posted, if you’ve come later), I’m not particular on who posts it, or when…only that we know where to look for it so we can all participate.
You could liken it to the current training-camp sitch the Philadelphia Flyers find themselves in, as described in the Yahoo!News story: Flyers have several candidates to fill vacant captaincy. Here it’s a lot like in that locker room. The person wearing the “C”, or posting the essay, won’t be doing all of the work. Sami Kapanen sums it up well, I think (from the above-linked article).
“If you have a C on the jersey, it’s not just up to him,” he said. “It’s a team game and everybody needs to bring something in. You can’t ask for too much from one player.”

ThreadBare: On Motion
Welcome to ThreadBare.
ThreadBare was inspired by word-association, a play on the ‘threads’ of conversation we weave into our Webland. The ‘bare’ part inspired its use as a more personal, ‘soul-baring’ type of thread. Since we spend all week regurgitating facts and linking to sources and quoting experts and verbally sparring, it might be nice on a Saturday to think and feel about things.
What kind of things?
Any kind of things. Personal issues, preferably your own. Societal issues. Site-related issues (issues, please, not ‘issues’). Things that make you happy. Or sad. Or angry. Or mad. An interjection starts the sentence right. No, wait, that’s SchoolHouse Rock. Equally awesome, but not relevant…
And did I mention the possibility of obscure references? I probably should have.

Believe it or not, ThreadBare has fans. Fans I don’t care to disappoint. I will continue to post this thread on alternate Saturday nights as a service to those fans. I thank anyone who chooses to participate, and understand anyone who doesn’t. There are plenty of threads to choose from, and we need them all to make Webland strong.

Pony Party: Welcome to the Monkey House
Good morning!!
I hope those of you more familiar with DocuDharma will indulge me as I take a minute to explain what the heck a Pony Party is.
Pony Parties should appear in the ‘Recent Essays’ section of your DocuDharma Front Page 3 times a day, 9 a.m., noon, and 3 p.m. Eastern. They serve as open fora, so feel free to ‘pimp’ an essay, say hello, vent, or throw up a plethora of ponies and pooties. Basically, the floor is yours.
They appear in the essay column, and due to their frequency and the additional open fora that will appear on the Front Page (more on that later), are meant to scroll away. So please, don’t recommend the Pony Party essay. I know it’s tough. We’re nice people, and we like to give acknowledgment. Trust me, we won’t take it personally. But you know who might? The person who gets bumped off of the Recommended Essays list by a Pony Party. Put yourself in his/her shoes.

Pony Party: September 11th edition
We hear that 9/11 changed everything. And we know that’s not the whole truth. 9/11 changed people through their emotional response, and the opportunistic pounced on the opportunity to change the rest of the ‘everything’.
9/11/01 changed how we feel about our world, yet I feel more fear and less hope today than i did then. 9/11/01 was merely the catalyst.
I’m not a poet, a preacher, a politician, or a philosopher. I have no wise words, on this anniversary, no perspective to offer. Only quotes about change.
Anniversaries are days we tend to look back. But today, while I reflect, I am also committing to looking forward. To change. 9/11/07 could change ‘everything’, too. All it wants is a catalyst.

ThreadBare is a word-association-inspired invitation to use the ‘threads’ of conversation to:
1. use the concept of an ‘open thread’ to open hearts, open minds, and open cans of whoop-ass (sparingly, and only where appropriate. cans of whoop-ass are always on the table).
