PA-06:Fool Me Once, SOY, Fool Me Twice, SOM
Fool Me Once, Shame On You, Fool Me Twice, Shame On Me
I just saw this today, about PA-06, http://www.dailykos.com/story/… at GOS, and since I have relatives who live in this district, plus I spent part of my life very close by, I thought I’d comment. First, some background on Southeastern Pennsylvania politics.
In 2006 a former career Navy admiral named Joe Sestak(D) decided to run for Congress in nearby PA- 07. It was a traditionally Republican district, but he managed to win. Sestak was a Netroots candidate.
After he won his second term, he became bored or more ambitious, and decided to run for the Pennsylvania Senate against Arlen Specter, who had switched parties from Republican to Democrat.
Even though he was still in the House, Sestak’s campaign donations jumped dramatically until he officially announced he was out of the congressional race and into the Senate. This happened during the height of the health care debate in the spring of 2009, and during that, the issue was, for many activists, whether or not we would have a bill with a Public Option.
In spite of my online, public queries as to whether or not Sestak supported a Public Option, his online coordinator remained coy and merely directed me to links on Sestak’s campaign site, which did not supply that information. I also searched elsewhere. From those links, it seemed that Sestak was for the concept of health care reform in general, but which sounded like mostly private plans, managed differently. Since Sestak had campaigned on his family’s personal health care struggles, this was rather annoying.
Plus, with Sestak running for Senate, it now left PA- 07 at risk of being retaken by the Republican Party, after a lot of people for a very long time had worked to get it out. Triple annoying. Now it looks to be a race between a Democratic State Representative, Bryan Roy Lentz, and a former Republican US Attorney, Patrick L Meehan. http://www.thegreenpapers.com/… Here is Meehan’s site, http://www.meehanforcongress.com/ he’s raised over a million so far, and he’s not going to do a damned thing for that district. Here is Meehan’s version of health care “reform” http://meehanforcongress.com/h… which is to give people tax credits to purchase insurance and have them use Health Savings Accounts. He is against the current bill and would have voted against it. On the other issues, economy, taxes, and transportation, he ignores foreign policy. Meehan’s probable Democratic opponent, Bryan Lentz, isn’t something to get enthused about, either, he is also tacking to the right trying to keep up with the “more tax cuts will solve everything” meme. His healthcare stance is vague other than he says he will “fight” to let Americans keep their doctor and insurance, and “fight” against insurance companies to stop discrimination against those with pre existing conditions. “Bryan will fight for real lobbying reform that includes banning all gifts from lobbyists ” to reform our government.” “Bryan will also work to provide tax cuts to companies that take advantage of innovative renewable energy technologies like wind, solar and geothermal.” http://votelentz.com/index.php…
So, if Lentz loses, because he is a klutz, http://www.pa2010.com/2010/04/… Sestak has turned the seat over to the Republicans, only to run against a Democratic incumbent in a race he is also likely to lose, because he underestimated Specter’s being a known quantity state wise, and his personality seems to have some Philly area, eastern PA loyalty.
In 2006 I had travelled to the district and had talked a high school friend into campaigning for Sestak, so I was very interested in the answer to the Public Option query, as here it was 3 years later, in 2009, since the Democrats had taken control of the House, the economy was worse, the war(s) were still going on, and we still did not have any sort of decent bills coming out of this Congress on this matter. I take my endorsements seriously. Especially since I was talking to somebody who told me what his life was like living in a town whose economy was not doing well, and he was now enthused about this candidate.
It was only after Senator Arlen Specter publicly said that he was for a Public Option, in 2009, that the formerly reticent Sestak began to publicly be for one, too. THIS is the power of the primary. It makes candidates commit to platforms and give their stances on issues, which then we the voter can compare to their later behaviors.
Arlen Specter is a crafty old ex Democrat, then ex Republican who’s a Democrat again, who’s alway’s had a bit of a moderate- liberal streak. If there is one thing he knows, it’s that you can’t undercut your own Party consistently. Hence Arlen, after a bit of a fumble out of the gate, got with the program and supported Health Care Reform and the Public Option. He also signed the “Bennet Letter” on Feb 19, 2009, which supported the leadership to use reconciliation to pass a Public Option. http://www.politico.com/news/s… Yes, I know that we didn’t get one, but we also had alleged Democratic Senators who were actively fighting against this P/O the entire way, such as Blanche Lincoln ( D, “Koch Oil, Walmart”) of Arkansas, and a lot of alleged Democratic congressmen. Overall, Specter has been a Democrat during his time as a Democrat.
But this isn’t about him, really, or Sestak. It’s about Doug Pike vs. Manan Trevidi, in the Democratic Primary in nearby PA – 06 .

An Independent Senator From a Northeast State Expresses Joy at the news that the Democratic President and Party is less Popular in the Polls Because The Independents Who Voted For Him…. Don’t Feel “Cared About.”

“There were a lot of people, particularly Democrats, who were declaring after the 2008 election that we were beginning a period of Democratic dominance that would go on for decades,” Lieberman said during an interview with the conservative Newsmax magazine.“Now, all of a sudden, the momentum is with the Republicans. And that’s – thank God – that’s the way people have spoken, you know? That’s our democracy.”

Q. The Obama administration is saying to the world, If you attack us with biological or chemical weapons, we will not attack you with nuclear weapons first if you don’t have them. What does that say to our enemies who might want to wipe us out ?
Appropriate ambiguity up to now…. We reserve the right to use nuclear weapons …. if the attack was bad enough.I prefer that ambiguity. I don’t support the change the Obama administration has made. Like swiss cheese, full of holes. There are plenty of reasons the US could find a reason to respond.
Bottom line, I want any nation thinking of doing anything as extreme as to attack America to fear we would respond with a nuclear attack. I hope we never get to that point. I want our enemies to be uncertain and afraid.
*
*
Q. Should President Obama have dropped the term “Islamic Extremism ?” What do you make of that ?
I don’t like that change. I don’t understand it. I think it’s fundamentally dishonest. I don’t think it gains anything I think it loses us some support in the Muslim world. The fact is, we’re not in a war with some nebulous group of violent extremists, ah
we not in a war with environmental extremists, white supremist extremists, we’re in a war with Violent Islamist Extremists and Terrorists.
the people who attacked us on 9 – 11 were not just violent and extreme, they were motivated by an ideology of Islamic extremism, which took the religion of Islam and essentially transformed it into a radical political ideology.
(video minute 4)
and if we don’t call it what it is, first up, we are violating the first rule of war for thousands of years: Know Your Enemy.
Secondly, how do you defeat your enemy unless you describe what it is , and 3rd, in many ways it is an ideological conflict between one set of values and this violent Islamic extremist ideology. Most people in the Muslim world reject this, but if we don’t say there’s a difference, between most Muslims in the world, and the violent Muslim extremists and terrorists, we disrespect most Muslims, and I don’t think we gain any favors from that . I think that our enemies … must be laughing at the word game, and our friends can’t be encouraged by it.

Time to use military force in Iran?
time to have plans ….. when we say it’s unacceptable for Iran to go nuclear.next step is tough sanctions… to hurt. …. last chance before using force. This is a turning point in history. If we allow Iran to go nuclear the world becomes unsafe for everybody …. all the work, it’s over. The chance of peace between Israel and Palestinians is over.

Palin’s speaker’s contract found in dumpster with other shredded documents at Cal State, Senator Yee had sought them in public disclosure request
” In addition to the bendable straw and Learjet that Palin required, the contract also stipulated that she be picked up at the airport by SUV or black towncar; that her name be registered at (an upscale) hotel under an alias; that autographs not be allowed; that all photographs be taken by a professional photographer; and that personal cameras, cell-phone cameras and any other recording devices are to be turned off wherever she is.

The students, Alicia Lewis and Ashli Briggs, submitted the documents to the attorney general”s office Tuesday to buttress an investigation already underway into whether Cal State Stanislaus violated the California Public Records Act.“The linkage is absolutely intertwined,” he (Yee) said. “It”s like having a fundraising operation in my Capitol office.”

Tragic Air Crash Kills Polish President, Scores More, in Russia
Poland’s President, Lech Kaczynski, his wife Maria, and much of his cabinet, and all the passengers have been killed in a terrible airplane crash near Smolensk, Russia, when the ancient Tu -154 Tupolev carrying them missed the runway in thick fog and went down. There were no survivors.
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/…
“We still cannot fully understand the scope of this tragedy and what it means for us in the future. Nothing like this has ever happened in Poland,” Paszkowski (foreign ministry spokesperson) said. “We can assume with great certainty that all persons on board have been killed.”
The crash is likely to be a setback in Polish-Russian relations which had been improving of late after being poisoned for decades over the Katyn massacre.
Russia never has formally apologized for the murders of some 22,000 Polish officers, but Prime Minister Vladimir Putin’s decision to attend a memorial ceremony earlier this week in the forest near Katyn was seen as a gesture of goodwill toward reconciliation. Rossiya-24 showed hundreds of people around the Katyn monument, many were holding Polish flags, some of them were weeping.
In a case of horrible irony, President Kaczynski and his army Chief of Staff and Deputy Foreign minister were to attend a memorial service to mark the Kaytn Massacre, or Zbrodnia Kaytnska, near Smolensk, when about 22,000 Polish POW officers were murdered by the Soviet Secret Service NKVD during World War 2 by order of Stalin, in 1940. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/K…

Wikileaks: Reuters and kids as Collateral Damage
The man, dressed in a white shirt and dark pants, strides confidently down the middle of the suburban street, his camera bag slung over one shoulder, his co worker following behind, with other men in summer clothing ambling down the road. He pauses to speak into his cell phone.
In the distance, helicopters hover.
Nearly 3 years later, what happened to him and companion as they walked to their next Reuters assignment is known.

In Iraq and Afghanistan, by this year, there have been 4705 American and Coalition forces killed in Iraq, and 1713 killed in Afghanistan, with the majority coming from the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada. There have also been at least 462 private contractors killed http://icasualties.org/Iraq/Co…
At least 139 journalists have been killed in Iraq between the years 2003 and 2009. Of those, 7 were embedded with the military, and 132 were non embedded, or “unilateral.” An astounding 117 of those 139 were Iraqis, with the rest being European or from other Arab nations, with just 2 being from the United States.

So does Nato Brigadier General Eric Tremblay

Issuing an apology, NATO Brigadier General Eric Tremblay said: “We regret this tragic loss of life. We will try and strive to improve our tactics, techniques and procedures.”
Germany, The Local
Earlier Friday April 2
http://www.thelocal.de/nationa…
Earlier Friday, three German soldiers were killed and eight were injured – four seriously – when the Taliban ambushed a patrol in the worst firefight the Bundeswehr has seen in its nearly eight years in the war-torn country.
According to Brigadier Frank Leidenberger, the commander of the international ISAF forces in northern Afghanistan, the patrol was attacked by about 100 Taliban insurgents as it removed mines planted in the road in the dangerous district of Chahar Dara, near the Bundeswehr’s Kunduz base.Other reports said up to 200 Taliban fighters had been involved in the ambush and had used rocket-propelled grenades among other weapons.
The deaths of the German soldiers bring to 39 the total number of Germans killed since the beginning of the Afghanistan war in 2002. They have caused shock and dismay in Germany.
There are currently 4000 troops from Germany in Afghanistan, many in the northern, more peaceful area, with 850 more to be sent soon.
Canada, CBC
Later Friday April 2
http://www.cbc.ca/world/story/…German soldiers in an armoured personnel carrier opened fire after coming across two civilian vehicles that refused to stop. Soon after, it was discovered the vehicles were carrying Afghan troops.
“Yesterday, after a military operation which took place in the Char Dara district of Kunduz province, Afghan national army troops were distributing food near the German troops when German troops opened fire,” said Afghan defence ministry spokesman Gen. Zahir Azimi.
“In this incident six Afghan soldiers were killed. The defence ministry have already condemned the incident,” he said.
America, Boston Globe
2 days later
http://www.boston.com/news/wor…The friendly fire shooting Friday took place in northern Kunduz Province, where German forces were sharply criticized last September (2009) when they ordered an air strike on two tanker trucks that had been captured by the Taliban. Up to 142 people died, many of them civilians.
Speaking during a visit to South Africa, German Defense Minister Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg expressed sorrow over the friendly fire deaths and said German soldiers were doing everything possible to avoid such incidents.
The September 4th airstrike may have been called in by the Germans, but it was carried out by a United States warplane.
Chancellor Merkel expressed regret and took responsibility for that incident in December, and it resulted in a cabinet resignation. http://af.reuters.com/article/…

4/3/10 The Day after Good Friday: Zubaydah

(this same link in a form which does not jump all over the page when the mouse attempts to scroll over it here: http://www.thetorturereport.or… )
Timeline Summary of Binyam Mohamed and Abu Zubaydah:
April 2002. Binyam Mohamed arrested in Pakistan. Interrogated by the British Secret Service MI6. Tortured in Moroccan secret prisons.
Sept 2004 Binyam Mohamed sent to Guantanamo, from Bagram, Afghanistan. Although declared an
“enemy combatant” Nov 2004, Binyam Mohamed decides not to participate in the military Tribunal created by President Bush in Oct 2001.
2005 Binyam Mohamed charged with conspiring against the U.S., with “Usama Bin Laden (a/k/a Abu Abdullah), Saif al Adel, Dr. Ayman al Zawahiri (a/k/a “the Doctor”), Mohammad Atef (a/k/a Abu Hafs al Masri), Abd al Hadi al Iraq, Zayn al Abidin Muammad Husayn (a/k/a Abu Zubayda hereinafter “Abu Zubayda”), Jose Padilla, and Khalid Sheikh Mohammad” to commit acts of terrorism.
Zubaydah, the vanishing man-
(Binyam)Mohamed was formally recharged with conspiracy on May 28, 2008. The charge sheet is virtually identical to the one issued on November 4, 2005, except that Richard Reid’s name has been removed from paragraph (e) and every reference to Abu Zubaydah has been purged from the document. Where before “Binyam Mohammad then traveled to Birmel, Afghanistan and was introduced to Abu Zubayda” and “Abu Zubayda promised him training in Pakistan building remote control devices for explosives,” for example, now “Binyam Mohamed then traveled to Birmel Afghanistan, and trained on building remote control devices.” “After arriving in Lahore, Binyam Mohammad and Jose Padilla met with Abu Zubayda in private and discussed plans for attacks against the United States” and “Abu Zubayda stated he preferred Binyam Mohamed conduct an ‘overseas’ operation instead of going back to Afghanistan” became “After arriving in Lahore, Binyam Mohamed and Jose Padilla plotted attacks against the United States. After these discussions, Mohamed and Padilla agreed to be sent to the United States to conduct these operations rather than returning to Afghanistan.”23 [23]
Sept 22, 2008. Lt Col Darrel Vandeveld, US military Tribunal prosecutor, requests to resign his military commission, stating he had ethical qualms about continuing to prosecute Guantanamo detainees without evidence being made available for the defense.
Oct 20, 2008. Pentagon dropped all charges against Binyam Mohamed and four other detainees whose original charge sheets had linked them to Abu Zubaydah.
Oct 21, 2008. The United Kingdom notifies the Foreign Office they are about to hand down notice on releasing CIA documents for Binyam Mohamed’s attorneys.
Oct 22, 2008. The British courts rule. A British – US diplomatic tug of war over who goes first, releasing what classified documents, trying to hide the torture evidence, results. This year, a few paragraphs were released, showing that the British govt. secret services did know of Binyam Mohamed’s incarceration.
Jan 22, 2009. President Obama orders Guantanamo closed, bans torture, forms task force to review all cases.
Feb 23, 2010. Binyam Mohamed finally freed and returned to the UK.
from Binyam Mohamed’s Statement the day he was released:….For myself, the very worst moment came when I realised in Morocco that the people who were torturing me were receiving questions and materials from British intelligence. I had met with British intelligence in Pakistan. I had been open with them. Yet the very people who I hoped would come to my rescue, I later realised, had allied themselves with my abusers.
I am not asking for vengeance; only that the truth should be made known, so that nobody in the future should have to endure what I have endured.

An Assiniboin | Cree | Sioux Legend
The Legend of the White Horse Plain by Margaret Arnett MacLeodManitoba Pageant, January 1958, Volume 3, Number 2
This article was published originally in Manitoba Pageant by the Manitoba Historical Society on the above date. We make it available here as a free, public service in hopes it will continue to be useful. Gateway to the west is a name frequently used to designate the city of Winnipeg, since it stands on the eastern edge of the Canadian prairies.
__________________The city looks west over a small area which was known as the White Horse plain. There, in the lee of a ridge to the west and north, the hamlet of Grantown was founded in 1824. This nucleus of settlement, 18 miles west of present day Winnipeg, was later renamed and is today the village of St. Francois Xavier.
The ridge was early called the Coteau de Festin, since from time immemorial it had been noted as a gathering place for the Indians – a place where they held dog feasts, sun dances and other celebrations.
This beginning of the western prairies is a storied place, the only area around Winnipeg which has left us a legend – the legend of White Horse plain. For more than two and a half centuries this region has been called the White Horse plain. It carried that name for more than 50 years before the first white man set foot in the west, for over a hundred years before Manitoba existed; for so long indeed that the actual occurrence which named it has been almost forgotten by its people, leaving only the legend it engendered.
The legend as given here is the version which was most widely corroborated for me by old residents of White Horse plain and others.
____________________In an early period of the seventeenth century, when only Indians roamed the western plains, the most northerly nation, the Crees, were being pushed farther and farther towards Hudson Bay by their traditional enemies, their fierce neighbors to the south, the Sioux.
Finally the Sioux gained a foothold in the wealthy Cree country as far north as Lake Winnipeg and the point north of the tip of Lake Superior, now known as Sioux Lookout. It was a serious situation for the Cree. They were desperate. In this barren land they faced near starvation and possible extinction. Then came their salvation, the arrival of the white men at Hudson Bay with whom they soon began to trade. Before long they had the white man’s guns and were making effective war with them against the bows and arrows of the Sioux. So the invaders in turn were pushed farther and farther back into their own territory, and the Cree became the great warriors, more invincible than ever the Sioux had been.
As a consequence of this, the Crees’ nearest neighbors to the south, the Assiniboines, a branch of the Sioux who formerly had protected the Sioux from the incursions of the Crees, were glad not only to make peace but later to ally themselves with this powerful and irresistible nation which fought their enemies with fire.
Against this alliance the Sioux, though flaming inwardly, could do nothing. Nevertheless they kept a jealous eye on the movements of both.
Early one summer in the 1690s, a large band of Assiniboines was camped on the banks of the Assiniboine river about ten miles west of the centre of present day Winnipeg. The chief of these Assiniboines had a beautiful daughter, and to his lodge came two suitors for her hand – a Cree chief from Lake Winnipegosis and a Sioux chief from Devil’s Lake.
The Cree was the favored suitor for he had to offer in exchange for a bride that rarity, that coveted prize of the prairies, a horse as white as the winter snows, a Blanco Diablo which came from that famed breed in Mexico. Nimble of foot, swift as the wind, strong and sturdy, a “white devil” could out-run and out-last any other horse, and go three or four days longer than any other without food or water.
The prospect of such a gift was irresistible, and the father succumbed. But not all the Assiniboines in the camp favored the alliance with the Crees, notably a powerful medicine man. The memory of Cree war parties with Assiniboine scalps flying in the wind was ever before his eyes and he nursed in his heart the old bitterness.
“Is it not enough”, he thundered at his chief, “that you should make peace with the enemies of our forefathers? Now you will disgrace us by mingling our blood with that of our foes!” But his protests were in vain. So he sought by his magic and exhortations to strengthen in the camp the hatred against the Crees.
The marriage was planned for a time when the Sioux chief was to be on a war expedition, but they counted without the medicine man. Secretly he sent off word of his rival’s success to the young Sioux.
On the day appointed for the ceremonies, the Cree bridegroom, gorgeous in the trappings of his chief-dom, arrived from Lake Winnipegosis mounted on a fine grey steed, and leading the white horse loaded with additional presents for his prospective father-in-law.
The gifts were presented and the Cree claimed his bride. Then, with the feasting and merrymaking scarce begun, suddenly there was an alarm – a cloud of dust in the distance. The flouted and vengeful suitor with an escort of Sioux warriors was fast approaching over the prairie.
All was confusion in the camp. Cries of Sioux and Cree sympathizers alike filled the air. “Up, up! Away! It is your only chance!” cried the bride’s father to the Cree. “Take your horses and flee!”
The bridegroom ran with his bride to the tethered horses, helped her mount the white steed, jumped to the grey in a flash and they were off. Westward they flew, but not unobserved. The Sioux with his party was quickly in pursuit.
But even the time gained at the start and the swift pace of their fleeing ponies did not save the bridal couple. Though they doubled back on their tracks to mislead their pursuers and at times were hidden by patches of bush, once out on the open plain again the white horse was the mark that betrayed them.
On, they sped over the prairie. The frightened girl held back the pace of her horse to that of her husband’s grey, and the Sioux were gaining on them.
Finally at a point just east of the present day village of St. Francois Xavier, the avenging arrows of the Sioux sped to the hearts of the fleeing couple and killed them both.
The grey horse was wounded, but the white steed escaped into the deep woods. For years it roamed the plain, thus giving its name to the region, and the Indians, believing that the soul of the girl had passed into its body, feared to approach it. As time passed the belief grew that, in ghostly form the white horse continued its wild wanderings.
Today there are old residents in the district who recall the tragic story of the Cree chief and his Assiniboine bride, and relate the legend of the Blanco Diablo, which some believe still haunts the Plain.

Tortured Detainee Zubaydah, Used As Lab Rat by Our Govt
There isn’t much I can add to this. Just go read it.
Abu Zubaydah’s Drawings by emptywheel, aka Marcy Wheeler, Monday, March 29, 2010
Marcy Wheeler at FDL, who has established that the Bush administration had the Yoo/Bybee “permission” memos were written after the fact to legitimize the use of torture, quotes a new Jason Leopold story at Truthout.org about Guantanamo detainee Abu Zubaydah.
Torture Diaries, Drawings, and the Special Prosecutor 3/29/2010
While the CIA claims to have destroyed the tapes of the torture experiments conducted on Abu Zubaydah, his attorney, Brent Mickum, says
“…. he learned that the special prosecutor had obtained drawings during the course of his probe that Mickum believed were Zubaydah’s. In addition to the diaries, Mickum had previously sought from the Justice Department drawings Zubaydah made while in CIA custody. But the Justice Department told Mickum they could not locate the drawings.
“When I met with John Durham (note: the US Attorney and Special Prosecutor from Connecticut, who is investigating the CIA’s destruction of the tapes) I discovered he had drawings, which, based on my review I believed were my client’s,” Mickum said. “The drawings were ultimately produced to us in late 2009.”
The Justice Department would not discuss the drawings, diaries, or other issues related to Zubaydah’s case.
Mickum said in lieu of the torture tapes, the drawings Zubaydah made contain the best description of the torture techniques CIA interrogators used against Zubaydah while he was being held at the agency’s black site prison facilities “
According to Jason Leopold, his sources at the CIA, FBI, DOD, NSA, State Dept, DOJ, and former govt. officials, are only speaking on the condition of anonymity, but claiming that the CIA made the tapes to study Zubaydah’s reactions to the “techniques” used on him. When a particular type of torture made him break down completely, anything less severe was considered “legal” and therefore was okayed to be classified as legal interrogation techniques in the Yoo/Bybee memos. The tapes were subsequently destroyed.
One of Leopold’s sources referred to him (A.Z.) as an experiment and a “guinea pig.”
The tapes were destroyed. The personal diaries untranslated. The self portraits…. conveniently misplaced.

LMAO! RNC Steele: Hardlookin’, Hook, Line, and Sinkin’
Just what we needed to brighten things up on an otherwise drab Monday !
Yo, Republican Party – doesn’t calling it“frivolous luxuries which are out of reach of the vast majority of the American People” imply that given the cash, we would all be going to dinners at the local bondage themed nightclub featuring live bedroom antics ?
Some of us, you know, the old married farts, regular working people, and the ones not on Ted Haggard’s Cash for Public Blessings speed dial, just want to eat a steak and a salad and maybe some ice cream if it’s a Saturday, and then fall into bed at home, and go to sleep afterwards. No ropes required.
HuffPo says the kink, er, link webpage is down right now. Oh, dayam.
“The appearance is bad, I’ll give you that,” said Larry Farnsworth, a Republican strategist and former press secretary to House Speaker Dennis Hastert, “But… it’s tough raising money and I don’t think donors want to meet for free waffles and coffee at the Holiday Inn Express. These guys want to be wined and dined, it’s the dirty part of politics.”
