“If Not Us, Who?” – Redefining Power

Every time a deluded, Rush-parrot neo-con spouts the mantra, I want to go head-spinner like Linda Blair.

It goes like this, “Do you really want a cradle-to-grave nanny state like country x or y, while country z or z-scarier becomes the world’s new Super Power?”

The grim apocalyptic horns bast dramatically, followed by an admonition that technology is a blessing, and that none of the Social Democracies could have survived but by the grace of our boot straps.

Then they tell us there is no Garden of Eden, and to click our heels and repeat, “Capitalism is good. Corporatism is good. Modern living is here to stay!”

Besides the unbearably mixed metaphor and the horribly unbelievable plot line, history tells us this movie has failed over and over and over at the box office.

Never do they use facts to support the shop-worn lines, never do they consider people as a source of Power. Its always, serve the known masters, the devil you know is far better than the devil you don’t know. “If you kill the Masters, the next Master you are sold to could be MUCH, MUCH worse!” They always paint people with any amount of freedom as lazy, worthless, powerless and in grave danger from themselves. They never want us to know how much happier they are.

“There could be a Power Vacuum, and if not us WHO?” They say.

Oh shut the fuck up already. We know what your lies are. We know you want us to think it is the Elites keeping us safe from “ourselves” or scary “outsiders.”

YOU ARE THE PROBLEM.

Sunday Morning Over Normal

PhotobucketWell, its been a week… and despite my initial fear of it being intolerable waiting, like everything else one endures on this journey called life, it just normalized. I managed to keep my boys as distracted and amused as I could. Homework was still done, errands were still run, meals were made, conversations held. It seems anything can be become quite normal, and that humans are very resilient. But in the quiet of the morning, staring here at this page, tomorrow lurks like the last bastion of hope and the ultimate crushing blow of despair.

He has, by the initial diagnosis, a fast growing stage three large cell carcinoma, a relatively rare lung cancer. It tends to slough off cells, and can spread by the bloodstream. But he reacted relatively well to the chemo and radiation he got, and if it has shrunk and not spread, he agreed to round two of chemo. Tomorrow we find out the results.

We had a nice fire in the fireplace last night, ate leftover corned beef on pumpernickel bread, watched “House” reruns, and worked on Jake’s Christmas list. Normal, normal, normal. We went over our AFLAC bill, trying to decide what to shed and what to keep, since his boss isn’t paying the freight on that anymore… hmm… how much can we pay AFLAC out of the AFLAC money, when they still owe us 2 AFLAC checks from a month or more ago?  Quack, quack. I’ve 4 ignored utility bills staring me down in my inbox every time I boot my email. Heh. I guess THAT part is normal.

I cannot imagine losing this man, this warrior this way. He pretty much raised me, I feel, because most of what I am, I became as a result of meeting him at 21. From the first instant I laid eyes on him, I knew. My instincts have always been amazingly prescient about “keepers and kindreds” in my life, but this was like a cosmic explosion of rightness.  The road has not always been smooth, but all relations take work. Our psyches are intertwined in ways no one would ever understand.

Who would I be without my anchor? Would I become harder, more self-reliant as he taught me, when I was still a floundering “victim” type? Would I become softer, more forgiving of others, and revert to a more “doormat” (as he liked to call it) state? He tends to be a loner, and I the social one.

Which leads me to the place of the real questions… it needn’t be tragedy that is the impetus of change… what would I really like to change about myself, and why am I not working toward that now?

Lost Soldier

I know I said I’d never let you go. I didn’t. It was you that let me go, us go, you must know that.

I remember when we were rank and file, warriors on the ground, full of fire, hope, camaraderie.  We recognized the profundity that sometimes it takes an Armageddon to truly win. We were John the Baptist, preparing the way, and The Postman planning the recovery. We breathed one anothers breath, beat of the same heart. I would nestle into your neck and tell you how I couldn’t stand one more moment without you inside me. We renewed eachother for the fight, love feeding honor, spirit feeding truth, vulnerability feeding resolve in the cool morning air in the tents.

Perhaps your star was too bright, because the lure of the officer’s club kept you out longer and longer each night. They tamed that star, with strategy sessions and ever new ways of manipulating the message until the real message was lost. Until your platoon itself became shades to you. Until I became an echo of something theoretical, unreal. The dream became life, and life became dream.

Now living in a small lake community in Mexico, Joe might just get to opine on the events in Tenacatita as well, if Dobie can uplink to the show.

Tom DeLay: Dancing with the Bars!

He faces two to 20 years in prison on a conspiracy charge and five to 99 years or life on a money laundering charge. He is free on bail, with sentencing tentatively set for Dec. 20.

Sashay around with that soap on a rope, baby, and bow to your partner Bubba!  Tommy dear will soon be dancing to the jail house rock.

One can only hope that while he high steps and pirouettes on the way to the mess hall, it can be yet another prime time reality show. Perhaps a warning to the crooks and liars manipulating corporate whores to the top political positions, a warning that we are watching.

Soft money, soft shoe shuffle, hard money, hard time tap dance.

Maybe he can create a redistrict reggae number to regale us with while in there!

I doubt it though. I am fully convinced, after all, that he is much too young to dance well… that is an art that died with my Father’s generation. Although I imagine a light lead hand and a strong and versatile reverse hand won’t matter where he’s going.

I know, it will likely be a country-club prison that may in fact contain a ball room, if all the appeals don’t clear him yet. But one can imagine for a brief smiling moment that he is doing hard time on Sheriff Joe’s chain gang… and that whole team gets extra punishment for Tom’s poor work. And, as the lights out comes, they have been “encouraged” to teach Tommy the value of a hard days labor. And he will be doing another kind of dance with a long handled broom, in a move Fred Astaire never dreamt of.

The Whore

The Whore

(This will be somewhat graphic or horrifying for those of tender sensibilities… it is in fact a nightmare that I share with many women who may find themselves with nothing left to trade in some future collapse. Its a very dark piece.)

It had been my dream home for years, on a hill overlooking a lake on either side. I had it toured once in the better days with a builder’s show. At more than 8,000 square feet, its enormous logs still made the spacious rooms feel homey. Every bedroom had a private deck, its views of the gentle slopes to the lake to the east shown through hand polished knotty pine spindles made of branches and twigs. The kitchen was a dream, its gleaming marble and Hobart equipment ready to serve any culinary palate, replete with a counter top that not only had special sliding windows to the outdoors, but would rotate completely, windows and all to present a buffet to the deck at the press of a button. The engineering in spinning a slab that size amazed me.

Once I saw the flier taped to his homestead sign, saying that new crew of house cleaners would be hired, I raced at the opportunity. It would make the grueling day a little less painful to handle things of such beauty, I had thought. My enthusiasm for the place landed me the job and I was so grateful.

What’s the Alternative, Man?

A leg-up can come from the oddest places. Even then, you can loop your hand to get someone up in the saddle, but you can never run his race for him.

So, in walks this aging, wiry biker, a man who has become millionaire with his businesses, a cold call out of the blue. I had been telling my husband for days, “Call Rod.” I have no idea why I even said it. Must have been some karmic shit, because Rod came, and came bearing an open heart and hard truths.

Still, in the end, he said that he has no idea what he would really do in Mike’s place, despite his desperate attempts to will Mike into having the will to fight longer, not give up.

But, having gone through this with his brother, he made the point crystal clear. Once you give up, and things get bad enough to where you realize you are going to die, there is no going back, no re-do. “Sure its hell, but whats the alternative, man?”

The thing is, he says? Lots of things in life are like that, not just life-itself. You have to weigh the pain/sacrifice equation out with the alternative of never-going-back to whatever you decide to end, and take responsibilty for your choices and fix them….because after a time, be it a career choice, a degree or a mate, there is no going back. Especially your life itself.

Rod’s about to spend 1-4 in a Federal Prison. He knows that of which he speaks. And takes it all with aplomb.

PhotobucketAmid the rash of general debauchery that we Political Addicts must endure in the news cycle every week, you may want to consider any other rashes you may have. And that soon everyone will see them.

Apparently pornography and sexual assault are legal if the Fed’s are doing it. The full body scans have gone full press, so to speak, and the buy-out of the rape is an 11 thousand dollar fine. Sounds remarkably like extortion to me. “Hey, pal, you need to buy some, uh, fire insurance from my boys and me, see? Make sure nothing funny happens to your family business or home. Nice daughter you’ve got there too…” Golly, the government has gone gangster! Insert rape insurance, and its a double feature Godfather rerun.

Not that Crime at the Top is something new… this week also has seen a little UN and Amnesty International backlash for Bush’s brazen confession to War Crimes.

Eric Cantor, too brazenly violated the Logan Act, speaking to Israel about banding together against the President. Israel, the crown jewel in the tiara of human atrocities these days, who is getting a nice little bribe from Obama to put the Rape by settlement off a few Weeks.

Put your hands above your heads, and submit. Listen to the tape looping your brainwashing, “Security is everyone’s responsibility.” Its OK when Big Brother molests you! Smile for the camera!

(UPDATED!!!) WWL Interviews Noam Chomsky Jan 7

Bev gave me my choice of five dates, and I of course picked January 7th, the first Friday of the Year! His commute from the office will not have him there until 6:15, but there you have it!

A heads up to this kind population, before it scatters… so many beloved and brilliant people I will miss.

I have had the honor of talking via email with Noam Chomsky last night and today.

He is truly a warm and kind person, beyond being one of the most brilliant minds of the century.

He has agreed to talk to me on Wild Wild Left Radio after the first of the year, and had me contact his assistant to set up the specific date.

So stay tuned to The Wild Wild Left for details. It should be January, February latest.

I am not only honored, but touched by how kind his response has been to me. Kindness goes so very far.  He thinks she can get me in early January, or February if need be, but she really knows his dates better. He can agree, but she has to do the sticky work of fitting it in.

He absolutely wants to do this. He is just an amazing human being.

Friends, this is a gift. A huge gift for us all, to be able to ask questions of one of the greatest minds the Left has ever produced. It is a gift of information, knowledge and above all, wisdom.

It will be easier yet for me, because of his kind words thus far, and utter openness in responding to me… I already like him personally.

I will let you know as soon as Bev sets a definitive date.

But per Professor Chomsky’s choice, it is a done deal.

Tis the Fucking Season

Yeah, I know. I have things for which to be grateful. But excuse the fuck out of me if I cannot work up a decent set of humility and praise for the life I have been entitled to this year. I think the only gratitude I have is a deep one: Those of you who came and made my roof happen, those of you who donated and made it possible. At least there’s that.

Thanksgiving week is a bunch of pointless doctor appointments with people he will never use: His radiologist, when he can never again have radiation Monday, his surgeon, when he cannot have surgery Wednesday, and bloodwork Friday. Of course, each fucking appointment costs us an arm a leg and a left tit, even after our bullshit insurance; and not one of them can tell us a fucking thing until after the weekend, the following Monday when his Cat Scan occurs. Even then? They drag their heels for days before we get results. Its one big dragged out stressfuck of “will he live or die?” I cannot imagine my life without him. Its fast growing, of you remember, and his last appointment told him flat out – 25% or less chance. In the immediate. This year.

So, since Mike can’t eat, Jake only cares about the cranberry and pie, and I really don’t like Turkey much, (I’ll eat it, and I hear I make the best freaking bird around… but meh… its not my thing) why the fuck should I go through the whole brine-ing the night before, getting up at 5, making 2 kinds of dressing, seasoning, side dishes and baking fresh breads and pies? I can’t afford that shit anyway. I usually have a couple stray friends over, but I can’t afford that financially or emotionally either.

I guess I should be grateful for finding out who my real friends are, death is the great equalizer in more ways than one.
