‘Evangelistic’ scientist tapped to lead National Institute of Health

from John Byrne at RawStory:

The scientist chosen by President Barack Obama to lead the National Institute of Health has a controversial history of mixing politics with faith.

Dr. Francis Collins was a leading pioneer in human genome research and was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President George W. Bush in 2007. He led the government’s successful efforts to decode the human genome.

Obama nominated Collins to lead the NIH on Wednesday.

Buhdydharma Speaks: Docudharma is a PROGRESSIVE Community!

Just parking this quote here for future reference in flame wars anywhere else with people who say that DD is a bunch of far left zoned out DFH fringers and not a real progressive site.

In a really worthwhile commentary re online communities somewhere (I’m sure he said it, or would have given half a chance, but I just can’t find the link right now)…

Having learned from the failures of the others, I immediately announced that DD was a progressive community, and that henceforth conservatives would be on a short leash, or preferably in prison. There was a lot of crying about “free speech” and complaints that torturers were only expressing a difference of opinion as valid as any other, but I made it as clear as a boot in their asses that cons had plenty of places to go like Joliet, Attica, Marion, the ADX facility in Florence, Colorado, Big Sandy, or any of 111 federally run country clubs – and liberals didn’t, and that all 50 of these United States, and the House, Senate, DOJ and the Supreme Court would once again be safe havens for progressives. I fully intend to continue aggressively cleaning the clocks of the conservative troublemakers, and what do you know, most liberals like the idea, with the few exceptions of Messrs Holder, Obama, and most of the denizens of great orange satanland.

Of course this will just lead to arguments over what “Progressive” and “Liberal” REALLY mean, but I thought it worth noting, sharing and recording, lol.

So How Can We Use Him?

From Sherwood Ross this morning:

“We can only give you a couple of minutes with the President, so make your points quickly,” his aide said opening the door to the Oval Office, where I instantly felt the full force of the smile that has charmed the world.

“As you know, Mister President, my client Alphonse Capone is in the Federal prison in Joliet, Illinois-”

“For shipping cigarettes into Illinois without paying Federal and State taxes,” the president interjected. “See, I’ve read his case. A six million dollar swindle.”

“Right. But he was born into a Mafia family. He grew up in an organized crime culture. As a boy he was forced to sit through the entire ‘Godfather’ trilogy every year on St. Valentine’s Day.”

“Your point being-”

“He was programmed to do his job. He didn’t know it was wrong. He was only following orders.”

The President shook his head. “If you’re going to ask me to release him on that basis, forget it. No can do. If I were to release every Mafioso who said he was taking orders from higher-ups half the prison cells in America would be empty and their guards would be out of jobs, and this is a bad time for that.”

Vroom-kin!

When Dan Froomkin was dumped by ex-journalism source turned dinosaur and failing propaganda rag The Washington Post a couple of weeks ago, I added myself to his his email update list to keep track of his moves, and earlier today the following was emailed to his list, and also posted at http://busharchive.froomkin.com/goodbye.htm

A Special Message From Dan Froomkin

I’m delighted to announce that starting later this month, I’ll be taking on the duties of Washington Bureau Chief and Blogger for The Huffington Post.

This is a wonderful opportunity for me. It’s a marvelous platform — Arianna Huffington has built a large and thriving community of readers by adhering to the best principles of old and new media. And my new job gives me a chance to branch out a bit, while holding firm to my commitment to accountability journalism. Now I’ll have a chance to work as part of a great team, and do a bit more of my own reporting as well as commentary and media criticism..

I’ll still be writing frequently, but I’ll also be guiding the Huffington Post’s accomplished, enthusiastic and adventurous reporters; helping them continue covering Washington the way it should be covered. The extraordinary response to my departure from The Washington Post once again illustrated how much readers hunger for a new – or perhaps I should say old – method of political reporting: One that doesn’t rely on stenography or “splitting the difference,” but involves knowledgeable and trusted reporters calling things as they see them, speaking the truth — and letting the chips fall where they may. We’ll also be finding new and exciting ways to work with citizen journalists to access their wisdom and knowledge.

I look forward to working with all my new colleagues to hold the powerful accountable, expose corruption, explain how Washington really works —  and write about politics and government not as if it were just a game, but recognizing that it matters profoundly to every one of us.

I’m eager to hear your reaction and advice, as always. E-mail me at [email protected].

Salon blogger Glenn Greenwald has more about my move.

And one final note: I will continue serving in a part-time capacity as deputy editor of NiemanWatchdog.org.

Dan Froomkin’s White House Watch has ended its run on washingtonpost.com.

Howard Zinn On Creating A Movement To Pressure Obama

I originally posted this video interview with Zinn back on April 10, 2009 following the then recent revelations of President Obama’s DOJ under Eric Holder betraying Obama’s campaign promises to instead embrace the Bush administrations claims for immunity and “states secrets” in the case of clear FISA violations and illegal wiretapping.

So much more has gone down since then, and Obama has turned his back on so many of his campaign pledges to make his administrations policy decisions so far essentially a direct extension of the policies of the past eight years, with most of the bigger points outlined in Paul Street’s recent article The Dawning Age of Obama as a Potentially Teach-able Moment for The Left that I wonder if it is time for revisiting what Zinn had to say in this interview now…

In part three of what was a series of interviews, historian, political scientist, social critic, activist, author and playwright Professor Howard Zinn talks here with Real News CEO Paul Jay about why so many people seem to be convinced that Obama is anything more than what he appears to be given his actions and policies implemented since inauguration, and about how to create a mass popular movement to pressure Obama for progressive results in a supportive way, and concludes that social turmoil is not only not bad but necessary if it leads to something good in the sense of creating real change.

UN Official Demands Torture Accountability

Real News CEO Paul Jay talks with Michael Ratner of the Center for Constitutional Rights about the Obama Administration doing everything they can do to “run away” from the whole issue of accountability for the premeditated, organized and institutionalized torture program of the Bush Administration, about the need for real transparency as opposed to the false claims of transparency from Obama while reports and information are held back or heavily redacted before release, and about demands now coming from UN human rights advocate Navi Pillay for holding accountable senior Bush Administration officials.
