A major worry was a torture case brought by a Spanish non-governmental organisation against six senior Bush administration officials, including the former attorney general Alberto Gonzales.

Senator Mel Martinez, a former Republican party chairman, and the US embassy’s charge d’affaires visited the Spanish foreign ministry to warn the investigation would have consequences. “Martinez and the charge underscored that the prosecutions would … have an enormous impact on the bilateral relationship,” the officials reported.

Officials in Madrid discussed with Zaragoza ways in which a US investigation into the same allegations might be opened in order to force the Spanish court to close its own case. “Zaragoza has also told us that if a proceeding regarding this matter were underway in the US, that would effectively bar proceedings in Spain. We intend to further explore this option with him informally,” they said.

ATHENS – A Greek anarchist group claimed responsibility Tuesday for posting more than a dozen parcel bombs to European leaders and embassies, police said, in a campaign that caused alarm but no major injuries.

Two members of the radical Conspiracy of Fire Nuclei who were arrested as the rigged parcels were sent out early this month confirmed their involvement in a letter sent to the Indymedia website, police said.

At my University I learned that there were problems with students from “flagged” countries getting to the U.S. to flee the oppressive regimes they live under.  They wished to come to the U.S. through student visas yet those are being held up by the government and the university is not making an effort to get the paperwork and bureaucracy corrected.

So how do these students get to our schools in the U.S. in order to have free thought without fear of being killed for it?

Well….there’s a party for that.

Lower long-term interest rates in theory should ripple through the markets, affecting other rates, like those of 30-year, fixed-rate mortgages. That could encourage homeowners to refinance into cheaper mortgages, though it would not help the millions of Americans facing foreclosure.
