The Next PR Blitz You’ll Want to Miss

Hooray for Democracy!  Democratic Senator’s have introduced a bill that would repeal telecom immunity from civil suits for their part of Bush’s warrantless wiretapping.

Four Democratic senators have introduced a bill that would, if passed, repeal the legal immunity afforded the telecommunications industry for their participation in President George W. Bush’s warrantless wiretapping program.

Senators Chris Dodd (D-CT), Patrick Leahy (D-VT), Russ Feingold (D-WI), and Jeff Merkley (D-OR) announced the measure Monday. In a release, they said the bill “eliminates retroactive immunity for telecommunications companies that allegedly participated in President Bush’s warrantless wiretapping program.”

The four senators, all liberal Democrats, emphasized that they believed granting the industry immunity violated the law and due process.

Don’t jump for joy.  Don’t break out the champagne.  This is the next PR blitz of, “Hey, look what we did“, you want to miss because it means absolutely NOTHING

Hold on… no popcorn for you… wait for it…

Democratic Party; 4 and out

So, today in the Senate, the public option was killed in the Senate Finance Committee.  While five `conservative` Democrats were the votes, the public option defeat is a Democratic Party, as a whole, failure.

This utter failure by the Democratic Party is why they are going to go “four and out”; four years in power and done.  But, lets chronicle the total meltdown…

The Resource Wars

In Federalist Paper #4, founding father of America John Jay wrote:

MY LAST paper assigned several reasons why the safety of the people would be best secured by union against the danger it may be exposed to by JUST causes of war given to other nations; and those reasons show that such causes would not only be more rarely given, but would also be more easily accommodated, by a national government than either by the State governments or the proposed little confederacies.

But the safety of the people of America against dangers from FOREIGN force depends not only on their forbearing to give JUST causes of war to other nations, but also on their placing and continuing themselves in such a situation as not to INVITE hostility or insult; for it need not be observed that there are PRETENDED as well as just causes of war.

In 1960, Dwight Eisenhower said in his farewell speech:

Throughout America’s adventure in free government, our basic purposes have been to keep the peace; to foster progress in human achievement, and to enhance liberty, dignity and integrity among people and among nations. To strive for less would be unworthy of a free and religious people. Any failure traceable to arrogance, or our lack of comprehension or readiness to sacrifice would inflict upon us grievous hurt both at home and abroad.

In both of the above, two very important individuals in the history of America have warned us, as a nation and government, of the consequences to our country of engaging in unjust wars.  It is a lessen that we, as a nation and government, have failed to heed.

In this essay, I went through the history of American involvement in the Middle East and the reason behind it.  To our government, the availability of oil to our nation became a national security issue.

When we put the world events over the past nine years into context, we see the beginning of the `resource wars` and no resource is more sought after than oil…

Iran’s Nuclear Power

You know what irks me?  When people make statements that simply aren’t supported by facts.

Plutonium Page at Daily Kos writes about Iran’s nuclear enrichment.  Everyone is going nuts over Iran’s nuclear plants.

They are simply WRONG…

We Had Rights

Ministry of Truth has an essay up on First Amendment Rights.

We had rights — at one time.

We still have rights — IF you are granted them.

The Afghanistan War; Why We Are Still There

We all know why we invaded Afghanistan in October 2001; because Al-Qaeda had training camps in Afghanistan.  The question being asked now is; why are we still in Afghanistan?

The history is long and varied… the answer is simple.

Fringe? For How Long?

In case you missed this gem, Bob Cesca wrote a great piece for the Huffington Post.  It is one of the most honest pieces I’ve seen in a while.

If the Republicans ever manage to retake Congress, they will absolutely try to impeach President Obama. And it’ll be based upon a supremely ridiculous charge such as, say, the president refusing to nourish our crops with a sports drink instead of water.

Okay, so maybe the Idiocracy example is over-the-top, but if we follow the current trajectory of far-right attacks to their logical yet insane conclusion, it makes sense in a very eerie way. Have you seen the television commercials solemnly defending our right to poison our kids with “juice drinks and soda?” There you go.

I’ve been following the Republican descent into the realms of the bizarre for some time now, and it wasn’t until the “czars” thing broke that I became convinced that if they retook Congress the Republicans might try to impeach the president. The grounds for both the impeachment and the language used to sell it will likely be fabricated by either Glenn Beck or Rush Limbaugh.

And, as great as this entire piece is, and trust me, you want to read it word for word through its entirety, there was one part of it that floored me…

Josh Marshall ALMOST Got It (update)

Among the several blogs I read, Talking Points Memo is one of them.  So, when I read the lede, “You can’t handle the truther!”, it caught my attention.

Of course, what really caught my attention was this:

There is after all a world of difference between saying that the Bush administration had enough information about a pending attack that they should have done something to stop it and saying that the Bush administration knew about the attacks and intentionally let them happen in order to get an excuse to go to war in Iraq.

But this latest poll finally gets the question tightly worded enough to get at just what people are saying. And the number of Dems who believe the latter is pretty high.

(original article emphasis)

I didn’t realize the logic was so hard to understand, so, let me explain it to Mr. Marshall…

All Politics Is Local

South Carolina GOP candidates for Governor had their first debate.  On the Democratic side, you have Dwight Drake, Robert Ford, and Mullins McLeod.

Rep. Joe Wilson (R) is in a battle for re-election with Rob Miller (D) for South Carolina’s District Two.

Rep. Henry Brown (R) is going to have a primary challenger from Carroll Campbell III, the son of former SC Governor Carroll Campbell.

This little snapshot of South Carolina politics shows that all politics are local.

Heading into the home stretch

Normally, my essay’s run in a different direction.  I normally go after military issues, wartime issues, law enforcement issues, or my local politics and media.  So, you’ll have to forgive me this one where I talk a bit about myself.

If It Bleeds, It Leads (part 3)

So, what has gone wrong in our society, in our government, when the majority of the public favor a public option in health care reform, yet, our government is unwilling to provide it?  What has gone wrong when people are willing to protest the very thing they need for themselves and their families; affordable health care?

The answer to these questions can be found in two words; corporate money.

(part 1 and part 2)

If It Bleeds, It Leads (part 2)

That was the journalism meme; “if it bleeds, it leads”.  It was all about sensationalism, nothing more, nothing less.  Well, in America, there is a sensational story; the crisis that is health care.

Is it being covered?  How is it being covered?  And how is corporate media treating this national crisis?

(Part 1 is here)
