Obama, Cameron, to discuss BP oil spill crisis

by Jeffrey Jones

June 12, 2010

Louisiana (Reuters) – BP Plc’s handling of the Gulf of Mexico oil spill was expected to overshadow talks on Saturday between U.S. President Barack Obama and British Prime Minister David Cameron.

The two leaders will discuss the crisis against the backdrop of public anger and political pressure on both sides of the Atlantic over the spill, which has fouled coastlines, closed rich fishing grounds and battered BP’s share price.

BP has been the target of stinging attacks by the White House and its share price has gyrated on London and New York stock exchanges this week. Obama administration officials have threatened to increase BP’s liabilities for the spill.

UK backing lifts BP shares but spill looks worse

by Tom Berkin and Kristin Hayes

June 11, 2010

(Reuters) – Supportive comments from the UK government helped lift BP Plc’s battered shares on Friday, outweighing news that the British oil company’s Gulf of Mexico spill is much bigger than previously estimated.

Responding to moves by U.S. officials to grab more BP cash for the cleanup, British ministers heeded calls to defend the UK’s biggest payer of share dividends and stand up to perceived Britain-bashing by President Barack Obama.

“We are all concerned about the human and environmental impact and as the Prime Minister has said we understand the concerns of the U.S. administration,” Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne said after speaking to BP chief executive Tony Hayward by telephone.

BP shares plunge as U.S. threatens new penalties

by Tom Bergin and Anna Driver

June 10, 2010

Louisiana (Reuters) – Pressure on BP intensified on Thursday as the U.S. sought to extract more money to pay for the Gulf of Mexico oil spill and Britain’s Prime Minister said he “understood” U.S. frustration.

Shares in the British oil company sank to their lowest since 1997 in London trading on Thursday, catching up with a sharp fall in the U.S., before bouncing off their lows as U.S. trading prepared to start.

The cost of insuring BP’s AA-rated debt traded for a time at levels normally associated with “junk” status.

Wealthy businesswomen win California Republican races

by Peter Henderson and Jim Christie

June 9, 2010

California Republicans, who see a grim future for their economically battered state, chose former eBay Inc chief Meg Whitman to face former Democratic governor Jerry Brown in the race to succeed Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Confidence in government is scraping bottom in the most populous U.S. state, which is facing record 12.6 percent unemployment and a $20 billion government budget gap.

Carly Fiorina, another wealthy political novice and former chief executive of computer maker Hewlett-Packard Co, trounced her opponents to win the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate in California.

I was reading Tenpa over at Digital Tibetan Buddhist Altar.  A few days earlier he made a call to action over an important Buddhist monument, a stupa in Albuquerque, New Mexico, that the National Parks Service was about to demolish.

I was happy to discover that along with Digital Tibetan Buddhist Altar, other folks in the “Buddhosphere,” (not my invention!) managed to get the Parks Service to back off and the stupa was saved!

I followed the links in Tenpa’s post and discovered several other Buddhist blogs with links that led me on and on.

I paused at the above linked The Reformed Buddhist and through its blogroll came to Dangerous Harvests, whose round-up of interesting posts in the Buddhosphere led me, finally, to Ox Herding.

Anti-incumbent mood as 11 states pick candidates

by Steve Holland

June 8, 2010

An anti-incumbent mood in the United States threatens to claim another victim on Tuesday as voters in 11 states pick Democratic and Republican candidates to face off in November congressional elections.

Senator Blanche Lincoln, a moderate Democrat, is fighting for her political life in her Arkansas race for a third term.

The primary votes will also determine whether California Republicans will back two female former corporate CEOs for high office.

And Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, a Nevada Democrat, will find out if he will face a “Tea Party” Republican conservative in his uphill battle for re-election.

Issues in Depth:  Analysis: Obama and Democrats walk tightrope on oil spill

by Patricia Zengerle

June 7, 2010

Obama had been expected to spend the summer focused on rebuilding the U.S. economy and pushing through major items on his domestic policy agenda such as an overhaul of energy legislation and sweeping financial regulatory reform.

He had also set a busy international schedule, with a trip to Indonesia and Australia and a G20 summit both set for this month.

But the administration’s resources are being drained by the massive Gulf of Mexico oil spill, even as it grapples with issues like last Friday’s worrisome jobs report and looks toward elections in which the Democrats will struggle to keep their majorities in the House of Representatives and Senate.
