Pony Party: History Bites
When I was a young calico I went to Ferndale public school grades K-8 and we sang Oh Canada, God Save the Queen, and muttered the Lord’s Prayer. I always though of the Queen as this nice lady who came to visit once in a while, so of like a distant aunt.
Later in high school I learned that Canada won the 1812 War. This is how it was taught to us: Britain/Canada won the 1812 War because Canada did not become America. In the context of how the average Canadian thinks, it makes sense. Winning doesn’t always men you get something extra like a new territory, sometimes winning is getting to keep what you have.
But I got to thinking what if Americans don’t know about the 1812 War and how it turned out? What if they think they won that one to?
So as a public service…. I offer this description of the 1812 War….
Song by Three dead Trolls in a Baggie.
Here is a bonus alternative version of God Save the Queen….
Catchy one hit wonder for the young and young at heart….
Thanks for stopping by. Hang out and chit chat but please don’t rec pony party, go read some of the excellent offerings on the rec’d and recent list.

Pony Mambo Party
The floor is open. Shall we dance?
All pictures from PBS’ America’s Ballroom challenge
The mambo is a Cuban musical form and dance. Mambo was the name of a Haitian Voodoo princess. It means conversation with the gods. The first music called “mambo” was written in the late 1930s by a Cuban composer. Instruments commonly used for mambo music are conga, cajon, bango, timbales, claves, upright bass, piano, trombone, trumpet and saxophone.
The mambo craze began in the late 1940s when a musician named Perez Prado came up with a dance to go with it.
Hit it Perez!
Mambo No. 5
Now for some modern mambo craze. This is a fun song and the video rocks!

In Chinese astrology the animal signs assigned by year represent what others perceive you as being or how you present yourself. It is a common misconception that the animals assigned by year are the only signs, and many western descriptions of Chinese astrology draw solely on this system. In fact, there are also animal signs assigned by month (called inner animals) and hours of the day (called secret animals).
Click the wiki link above to find your zodiac symbol (based on the year you are born) and your “inner animal”. Earth, wood, fire, water, and metal also modify the animal signs.

Pony Party, Self-Indulgent Reminiscing
My grandmother has been forward in my mind here lately for a few reasons. Firstly, she died 20 years ago in January. Then there’s the fact that she was born and raised in Brooklyn, and had a super soft spot for NY teams (of which she always considered the Dodgers one), and would have been tickled to see the Giants win Sunday.
And lastly, because she was a first-generation American, and took democracy seriously. She worked for the Democratic party in what is now PA-08, and had me at the polls with her from the time I could stand. We used to stand outside the polls and hand out buttons and stickers (those were the days). In ’72, when my brother was born, I BEGGED my parents to name him George McGovern. They didnt.
