Original v. Cover — #44 in a Series
This writer has other commitments early this evening, so if someone could kindly post an opening comment for ponies on my behalf, I would be most appreciative. Please check back later this evening for additional commentary about the video above, additional photo images and more music.
The above video provides a somewhat oblique hint regarding the title of this week’s selection and is also a very memorable scene from one of the greatest films of the twentieth century.

The calendar reminds us that only four days of summer remain and that the autumnal equinox will soon be upon us, ushering in a new season, one of stunning, but all too often ephemeral beauty. Children have returned to school, football season (for better or worse) is again upon us, the slow march to the World Series will soon begin, leaves await raking and the days will become ever more fleeting. Daylight, so recently abundant, will become an ever more precious commodity during the months ahead. Cooler nights portend the promise of a better night’s sleep as hopes for a lengthy Indian summer spring anew.

The calendar tells us that summer is to soon draw to a close, despite weather that may suggest otherwise. This week’s selection pays homage to the season, and in August of 1966 became the only #1 hit for a popular group at the time that placed ten songs on the Top 40 charts during the mid to late 1960s. The song represented a significant departure from the folk-oriented songs that were a staple of this group’s work. During an instrumental bridge, the song includes a series of car horn sounds, starting with a Volkswagen Beetle horn, and concluded with the sound of a jackhammer to lend authenticity to the topic of the song. This number has since been ranked #393 on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

This week’s featured selection was written by a pioneering rock ‘n roll icon, and released in June, 1955 as the B-side of the songwriter/performer’s hit single, the title of which was identical to his name. Both songs, even if you don’t immediately connect the title and the music, are likely to sound familiar. The writing credit was listed under his real name at the time, Ellas McDaniel, and was based at least in part on Muddy Water’s 1954 song, “Hoochie Coochie Man”, which had been written by Willie Dixon. The B-side is ranked #369 on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. Although neither side advanced to the Billboard Hot 100 charts, both achieved a #1 ranking on the Billboard R&B Singles charts.

Ever encountered someone who almost perfectly embodied androgyny in appearance, mannerisms and demeanor? What has been your reaction if someone matching such a description enters the men’s or women’s restroom, and you are also present? Depending upon your sensibilities, you may feel compelled to immediately confirm their gender (unless you belong to the cast from “Ally McBeal”).
You may be one of those who merely asks the question up front or preferring a more subtle approach, attempt to discern if the stature, body build, five o’clock shadow, broad shoulders, or other disgtinguishing features might provide a clue, at the same time taking care to not appear too obvious.

Have you ever heard a song that so completely captures an earlier moment in your life that hearing it again immediately transports you back to that time? Sometimes a powerful catalyzing event seizes the collective attention of a nation, creating a sudden vacuum, waiting only to be filled by a universal means of expression that can clearly and articulately capture those powerful thoughts and emotions, duly recording the essence of a nation’s collective conscience in a manner understandable to the rest of the world, and perhaps more importantly, to posterity.
Some, perhaps many of us were around in 1970 to witness such an event, one that rocked a nation already reeling from escalating racial tensions and an ever widening divide between those who staunchly supported and those who opposed the United States’ unprovoked aggression and ongoing occupation of Southeast Asia.
