May 7, Johannes Brahms (1833) & Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840).

This piece, Hungarian Dance #1, was actually recorded on Edison Cylinder by Brahms himself in 1889 (YouTube below the fold).  It’s a horrible recording, barely recognizable, and the voice is almost certainly not Brahms.  It’s one of 21 Hungarian Dances of which the most famous is probably #5.  They’re great favorites of piano teachers, this one is usually performed as a duet or a 4 hander.

In his capacity as director of the Moscow branch of the Russian Musical Society, Tchaikovsky invited Brahms, who was quite a celebrity, in as a guest conductor.  March of the Slavs was composed in commemoration of a crushing defeat of the Serbian Army in 1876 by the Turks.  It was written in 5 days and includes some familiar themes later used in his more well known 1812 Overture.

1 Dome plunged deep into sea to cap US oil leak

by Mira Oberman, AFP

1 hr 49 mins ago

VENICE, Louisiana (AFP) – Workers lowered a huge dome over an oil leak gushing from a sunken rig deep in the Gulf of Mexico Friday as energy giant BP raced to contain a slick moving perilously closer to the US coast.

The unprecedented operation to drop the 100-ton (90-tonne) chamber some 5,000 feet (1,500 meters) below the surface to cap the leak was expected to be completed within hours Friday.

“They are in the process of lowering it now,” BP spokesman John Curry told AFP about the operation seen as the best hope to stave off the biggest US environmental disaster since the 1989 Exxon Valdez spill in Alaska.

1 BP ‘dome’ carries hopes of averting oil catastrophe

by M.J. Smith, AFP

Wed May 5, 5:51 pm ET

PORT FOURCHON, Louisiana (AFP) – BP dispatched Wednesday a giant “dome” on a high-stakes mission to contain the Gulf of Mexico oil spill, knowing failure would leave crude spewing into the sea for months and magnify the risk of an environmental catastrophe.

A crane lowered the 100-ton dome onto the “Joe Griffin” before the barge embarked on the 12-hour journey from Port Fourchon on the Louisiana coast to the epicenter of the disaster some 50 miles (80 kilometers) offshore.

A white silo with a dome-shaped top that stands five stories high, it carries with it the hopes of coastal communities from Texas to Florida whose very way of life is under threat from the slick.

1 BP seals first oil leak in Gulf of Mexico

by Allen Johnson, AFP

1 hr 31 mins ago

NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana (AFP) – BP capped Wednesday one of three leaks hemorraging crude into the Gulf of Mexico, as emergency crews rushed to protect fragile shorelines and islands at risk from the spreading oil slick.

Days of work off the coast of Louisiana with underwater submarines nearly a mile below the surface finally bore fruit as a valve was secured over the smallest of the three leaks and the flow shut off.

The feat does not alter the overall amount of crude spilling into the sea and threatening the fragile US Gulf coast, but is significant nonetheless as the focus can now narrow on just two remaining leaks.

1 BP deploys giant ‘dome’ to stem oil spill

by Mira Oberman, AFP

VENICE, Louisiana (AFP) – BP prepared Tuesday to deploy a 98-ton containment “dome” to try and stem a tide of oil gushing into the Gulf of Mexico and avert an environmental catastrophe.

The operation to place the giant structure over the largest of three oil leaks is unprecedented and, facing depths of almost a mile, remote-controlled submarines will have to guide it into place, hopefully by the weekend.

“We are aiming to put in on the ship today and start the process,” BP spokesman John Curry told AFP, adding that containers for the remaining leaks were still being built.

Erik Prince Speaks

You remember Erik don’t you?

Well, Jeremy Scahill of The Nation had access to a tape of him speaking that he’s planning on reporting but you get to see early via his blog RebelReports and Atrios.

Erik the Bloody-

A little known fact, you know when the shoe bomber in Iraq was throwing his shoes at President Bush, in December 08, we provided diplomatic security, but we had no responsibility for the president’s security-that’s always the Secret Service that does that. We happened to have a guy in the back of the room and he saw that first shoe go and he drew his weapon, got a sight picture, saw that it was only a shoe, he re-holstered, went  forward and took that guy down while the Secret Service was still standing there flat-footed. I have a picture of that-I’m publishing a book, so watch for that later this fall-in which you’ll see all the reporters looking, there’s my guy taking the shoe thrower down. He didn’t shoot him, he just tackled him, even though the guy was committing assault and battery on the president of the United States. I asked a friend of mine who used to run the Secret Service if they had a written report of that and he said the debrief was so bad they did not put it in writing.

1 Better weather spurs hope over US oil spill

by Mira Oberman, AFP

Mon May 3, 11:16 am ET

VENICE, Louisiana (AFP) – Kinder weather Monday encouraged response teams to step up efforts to counter a massive oil slick in the Gulf of Mexico, but a wind shift also put the tourist beaches of Florida more at risk.

And the day after President Barack Obama visited the disaster zone on the southern coast of Louisiana and put the blame squarely at the firm’s door, BP accepted full responsibility and accepted to pay the cost.

“BP takes responsibility for responding to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. We will clean it up,” the British energy giant said, vowing to consider all compensation claims “promptly” and pay them quickly if justified.

1 Oil slick closes on U.S. coast, BP pressed to act

By Matthew Bigg, Reuters

1 hr 20 mins ago

VENICE, Louisiana (Reuters) – A huge wind-driven oil slick bore down on the U.S. Gulf coast on Sunday, threatening an environmental catastrophe, and the Obama administration heaped pressure on BP Plc to halt the uncontrolled spill from its ruptured Gulf of Mexico well.

Since the explosion and sinking last week of the Deepwater Horizon rig, a disaster scenario has emerged with hundreds of thousands of gallons of crude oil spewing unchecked into the Gulf and moving inexorably northward to the coast.

The spreading black tide threatens wildlife, beaches and one of the world’s most fertile fishing grounds in an area stretching across four states, from Louisiana to Florida.

1 Disaster looms as oil slick reaches US coast

by Erica Berenstein, AFP

Sat May 1, 8:56 am ET

VENICE, Louisiana (AFP) – Oil from a giant Gulf of Mexico slick washed onto Louisiana shores Saturday, threatening an environmental calamity, as two more neighboring states declared a state of emergency.

President Barack Obama, meanwhile, planned to visit the spill area over the weekend to assess the situation first hand, a White House official said.

With up to 200,000 gallons of oil a day spewing into the Gulf of Mexico from a ruptured well, the accident stemming from a sunken offshore rig may soon rival the Exxon Valdez disaster as the worst oil spill in US history.

The Internationale

Arise ye workers from your slumbers

Arise ye prisoners of want

For reason in revolt now thunders

And at last ends the age of cant.

Away with all your superstitions

Servile masses arise, arise

We’ll change henceforth the old tradition

And spurn the dust to win the prize.

So comrades, come rally

And the last fight let us face

The Internationale unites the human race.

No more deluded by reaction

On tyrants only we’ll make war

The soldiers too will take strike action

They’ll break ranks and fight no more

And if those cannibals keep trying

To sacrifice us to their pride

They soon shall hear the bullets flying

We’ll shoot the generals on our own side.

So comrades, come rally

And the last fight let us face

The Internationale unites the human race.

No saviour from on high delivers

No faith have we in prince or peer

Our own right hand the chains must shiver

Chains of hatred, greed and fear

E’er the thieves will out with their booty

And give to all a happier lot.

Each at the forge must do their duty

And we’ll strike while the iron is hot.

So comrades, come rally

And the last fight let us face

The Internationale unites the human race.
