1 Kerry vows US climate outline for Copenhagen

by Shaun Tandon, AFP

Tue Nov 10, 9:03 pm ET

WASHINGTON (AFP) – Senator John Kerry has pledged to complete a framework of an elusive US climate change deal in time for next month’s high-stakes summit in Copenhagen, vowing not to let the world down.

President Barack Obama’s election returned the United States to active global efforts to fight climate change, but a year later Congress has yet to make good on promises to set the first-ever US caps on carbon emissions.

After a lobbying mission in the US Capitol by UN chief Ban Ki-moon, Kerry said Tuesday the Senate, while unlikely to complete legislation, would give US negotiators an outline before the December 7-18 talks in the Danish capital.

1 Suicide car bomb kills 32 in Pakistan market: officials

by Lehaz Ali, AFP

2 hrs 15 mins ago

CHARSADDA, Pakistan (AFP) – A suicide car bomb tore through a crowded shopping street in Pakistan on Tuesday, killing 32 people in the third militant attack to strike the nuclear-armed country in as many days.

The bomber blew up his vehicle in the heart of the northwest town of Charsadda on a road lined with fruit and juice shops, ripping off shop roofs and littering the ground with slippers, human flesh and broken push carts.

The United States has put Pakistan on the frontline of its war against Al-Qaeda and has been increasingly disturbed by deteriorating security in the country where attacks and bombings have killed about 2,500 people in 28 months.

Don’t Ask, Don’t Give

Joe and I are launching today a donor boycott of the DNC. The boycott is cosponsored by Daily Kos, Jane Hamsher of FireDogLake, Dan Savage, Michelangelo Signorile, David Mixner, Paul Sousa (Founder of Equal Rep in Boston), Pam Spaulding, Robin Tyler (ED of the Equality Campaign, Inc.), Bil Browning for the Bilerico Project, Andy Towle and Michael Goff of Towle Road, and soon others.

It’s really more of a “pause,” than a boycott. Boycotts sounds so final, and angry. Whereas this campaign is temporary, and is only meant to help some friends – President Obama and the Democratic party – who have lost their way. We are hopeful that via this campaign, our friends will keep their promises.

So please sign the Petition and take a Pledge to no longer donate to the DNC, Organizing for America, or the Obama campaign until the President and the Democratic party keep their promises to the gay community, our families, and our friends.

Clearly we have a problem here.  A fundamental disconnect between our D.C. ‘Representatives’ and the people they are supposed to represent.

A failure to communicate.

Well for all that people think I’m deep and mysterious, I think I’m pretty up front and in your face.  About as subtle as a two by four upside your head.

Democrat does not equal good!

Republicans are evil does not scare me anymore.  Better than nothing does not attract me.

Do your fucking job or go home asshole.  Your title does not impress me idiot.  And if you can’t read a poll you’re a lousy politician and deserve your failure.

The only thing that surprises me is how in denial people are about their delusions.

And that doesn’t surprise me at all.

Comforting the afflicted and afflicting the comfortable

What are journalists supposed to do?

They call handpicked invisible people on the phone and then write columns summarizing what they claim they said without identifying or describing a single one of them.

(They) just faithfully serve(s) as a mindless stenographer for hidden people whose credibility you’re told to accept even as they do nothing but spout manipulative, vapid idiocies about Churchillian Resolve designed to promote endless war.

Colbert

(A)s excited as I am to be here with the President, I am appalled to be surrounded by the liberal media that is destroying America, with the exception of FOX News. FOX News gives you both sides of every story: the President’s side, and the Vice President’s side.

But the rest of you, what are you thinking? Reporting on NSA wiretapping or secret prisons in Eastern Europe? Those things are secret for a very important reason: they’re super-depressing. And if that’s your goal, well, misery accomplished.

Over the last five years you people were so good, over tax cuts, WMD intelligence, the effect of global warming. We Americans didn’t want to know, and you had the courtesy not to try to find out. Those were good times, as far as we knew.

But, listen, let’s review the rules. Here’s how it works. The President makes decisions. He’s the decider. The press secretary announces those decisions, and you people of the press type those decisions down. Make, announce, type. Just put ’em through a spell check and go home. Get to know your family again. Make love to your wife. Write that novel you got kicking around in your head. You know, the one about the intrepid Washington reporter with the courage to stand up to the administration? You know, fiction!

Jesus and The Money Changers

I can’t really put it any better than Wikipedia does

The narrative of Jesus and the Money Changers occurs in all four Gospels in the New Testament. It occurs near the end of the Synoptic Gospels (at Mark 11:15-19, 11:27-33, Matthew 21:12-17, 21:23-27 and Luke 19:45-48, 20:1-8) and near the start in the Gospel of John (at John 2:12-25). As a result some biblical scholars think there may have been two such incidents.

I’m doing ‘God’s work’. Meet Mr Goldman Sachs

John Arlidge, The Sunday Times

November 8, 2009

“Is it possible to have too much ambition? Is it possible to be too successful?” Blankfein shoots back. “I don’t want people in this firm to think that they have accomplished as much for themselves as they can and go on vacation. As the guardian of the interests of the shareholders and, by the way, for the purposes of society, I’d like them to continue to do what they are doing. I don’t want to put a cap on their ambition. It’s hard for me to argue for a cap on their compensation.”

So, it’s business as usual, then, regardless of whether it makes most people howl at the moon with rage? Goldman Sachs, this pillar of the free market, breeder of super-citizens, object of envy and awe will go on raking it in, getting richer than God? An impish grin spreads across Blankfein’s face. Call him a fat cat who mocks the public. Call him wicked. Call him what you will. He is, he says, just a banker “doing God’s work”

As you might guess from my handle and my Buddhism I reject Christianity entirely, but that doesn’t mean I don’t know it.

What Blankfein is embracing is a particularly warped and narrow view of Calvinism.

Since everything is predestined by God who knew you in the womb, your material success is an indication of God’s favor.  It shows you are among the elect.

This is sometimes also called the Protestant Work Ethic.

The richer you are the more Godly.

Now how you square this with Camels and Needle Eyes and Saul’s Unmerited Favor through Grace is a job for a real theologian.

You know, someone who believes in original sin.

1 Huge crowds mark fall of Berlin Wall

by Deborah Cole, AFP

1 hr 8 mins ago

BERLIN (AFP) – Tens of thousands thronged the route of the Berlin Wall on Monday for emotional celebrations to mark 20 years since its fall, but Chancellor Angela Merkel said Germany still bears the scars of division.

World leaders joined huge crowds recalling the defining moment of the end of communist rule in Europe, when the embattled East German state finally opened the despised concrete border on November 9, 1989. Facts about the Wall

Merkel, who grew up in the communist state, attended a “very moving” memorial service at a church where pro-democracy rallies were held in the weeks before the end of the communist regime.

1 Wall anniversary celebrations kick off in Berlin

by Deborah Cole, AFP

Sun Nov 8, 11:11 am ET

BERLIN (AFP) – Berlin warmed up Sunday for the 20th anniversary of the Wall’s fall with celebrations throughout the city, as crowds gathered to relive the ecstatic scenes that heralded the demise of European communism.

Leaders from across the continent were due in the German capital to join around 100,000 revellers Monday at the Brandenburg Gate, the symbol of national unity since the peaceful revolution that tore down the Wall in 1989.

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was to give a speech late Sunday on the challenges facing the West two decades after the Cold War.

The Week In Review

Since Saturday before last (and not including today or yesterday) I’ve brought 382 stories to your attention more or less, an average of 54 a day.

Saturday 10/31 35 Sunday 11/1 35
Monday 11/2 52 Tuesday 11/3 80
Wednesday Science 11/4 24 Wednesday 11/4 58
Thursday 11/5 48 Friday 11/6 50

I think by any objective measure this is a lot of news.

Because of the volume it can be easy to overlook some important stories or trends and that’s why I’m considering posting a Week in Review piece every week (of which this is the first) to highlight things you may have missed.

Make no mistake, the HTML is more complicated than it looks which is why it didn’t publish on Saturday, but once having worked out the kinks I’m hopeful that it will become much easier to produce (or I’ll abandon it as ‘too much work’).

The other motivation for publishing this is that there is one story in particular this week that I wanted to highlight.

Do you remember Frederick Forsyth’s The Dogs of War?

(A) company of European mercenary soldiers (is) hired by a British industrialist to depose the government of the African country of Zangaro.

(T)hough fictional, the Central African ‘Republic of Zangaro’, is based upon Equatorial Guinea, a former Spanish colony.

Actually, like me, it’s not fictional at all.

Sir James Manson is Sir Mark Thatcher, son of Maggie, and ‘Cat’ Shannon is Simon Mann and this week he was released from “Black Beach prison, one of the most notorious in Africa” where he has been held since the failed 2004 coup.

And he wants to chat about it.

Sir Mark and friends have been warned “that those who abandoned him in adversity – which may well include Thatcher – should brace themselves for ‘an ice axe between the eyes’.”

I’ve covered this and I’ll highlight it here above the fold to get you used to the format-

1 G20 wants ‘ambitious’ Copenhagen talks, but gives no figures

by Katherine Haddon, AFP

ST ANDREWS, Scotland (AFP) – G20 countries committed to work for an “ambitious outcome” at next month’s vital UN climate change conference after meeting Saturday, but fell short of agreeing a figure on climate funding.

Finance ministers from leading developed and emerging economies also said they would keep economic policy support in place in the face of “uneven” recovery.

“We are not out of the woods yet and we need to maintain the measures we have taken,” said Alistair Darling, finance minister of host country Britain after the meeting in St Andrews.

Deal Breaker

Jon Walker and David Dayen, both of Firedog Lake are reporting tonight that the Stupak Amendment which virtually bars BOTH Private Companies AND the Public Option from providing coverage for Reproductive Health Care for Women will receive a Floor Vote tomorrow in the House.

As Jon explains-

Stupak’s amendment, by not allowing a private insurance company to sell a policy to anyone if they receive any amount of affordability tax credits, would make it impossible for a private insurance plan that covers abortion to survive on the individual and small group market. Stupak has threatened to bring down the entire bill if he does not get his amendment. Rep. Stupak called all previous “compromises” that had been offered “unacceptable.”

As David reports-

The Democratic leadership is making a bet that, if it doesn’t pass, Stupak and his cadres will sign on to the bill (I highly doubt it; most of them are no votes on health care entirely); and if it does pass, pro-choice Democrats won’t sink the bill entirely (also, I highly doubt it). I’m a bit surprised that it’s come to this. Also, Stupak appeared to have lied in the Rules Committee about how the deal “fell apart,” since he got what he wanted.

This is an enormous bet, and not a well-designed one either, in my view. The Democratic Party will tomorrow give a minority of their caucus an opportunity to amend a large health care bill that would effectively ban abortion services coverage in the individual and small group insurance market, essentially telling private insurance companies what they cannot cover.

Quoting the Washington Post, David continues-

The amendment is expected to pass with the combined support of more than 40 anti-abortion Democrats and virtually every House Republican. That likelihood meant that leaders of the much larger group of Democrats who support abortion rights were not happy to learn of the deal.

“There will be no abortion, not just with public funds, but with private funds under the public option, and that’s not acceptable,” said Rep. Diana DeGette (D-Colo.).

House leaders met with that bloc of Democrats late Friday to try to quell their frustration., but the agreement makes clear that they believe abortion-rights Democrats will find it difficult to vote against the health-care bill even with such a restriction attached to it.

As far as I’m concerned this is a flat out deal breaker.

Health Care Reform with the Stupak Amendment is not worth passing and I intend to call the House Leadership and my Congressperson tomorrow to express that opinion.

I urge you to do the same.

1 US jobless rate hit 10.2 percent; Obama eyes new steps

by Rob Lever, AFP

WASHINGTON (AFP) – US unemployment jumped to double digits in October for the first time since 1983, reaching 10.2 percent, prompting renewed talk of additional stimulus for an economy struggling to emerge from recession.

Friday’s Labor Department report, seen as one of the best indicators of economic momentum, showed job losses narrowed last month to 190,000.

The improvement was not enough however to prevent the jobless rate from surging to the first double-digit level for more than 26 years, from 9.8 percent in September.
