Pony Open Thread: The Last Days of Harvest
Here’s a great piece from Winslow Homer’s wood engraving period. It was published in Harper’s Weekly on December 6, 1873.
I love this guy’s real, surreal, and dream-like images… it’s like he knows the way i dream and daydream.
I also thought of Steven King’s Children of the Corn…

time to move on
it’s time to put away the fears
and the anxiety
whatever life is, this is it::: here. all of it, right up to now.
there are no escape clauses from disasters we make ourselves. no god, no super hero to save us.
it’s as it’s always been.
it always been up to us.

Pony Open Thread: social bookmarking
Pony pony pony. Okay class. What do we know about Pony Parties?
1. They are open threads
2. You can bring up anything and chit chat
3. We do not rec the pony parties
other than that, just be excellent to each other. oh, and by the way, how do you bookmark your favorite sites? what do you think of this idea of social bookmarking?

a world of mass consensus
you’ve got me thinking… what if we didn’t think history needed much perspective from one decade or century to the next… when there were long stretches of reproducable events… until spice routes and merchant classes and the world, from ancient china to marriage alliances in europe in the middle ages, created more people and players vying in complex ways for resources, power, and political advantage.
and while we can catalogue events and relate history, even try to interpret it or, as you did, assign cultural milestones… maybe we haven’t begun to grapple with leaving 1000s of years of behaviors to enter a world of mass consensus… relationships too intricate and too large in scope, scale, and implications
maybe we’re still not past napolean or the revolutionary war… definately still an undercurrent of civil war
and in europe, old rivalies still inform cultural attitudes
anyway… just a reaction to your interesting essay, thinking that in the span of time, what’s a few thousand years…

writing in the raw: it’s my nature
love.death.love.death.love.sex
before my 16th birthday, my dad took me out for dinner. he said he figured it was time for the “sex” talk. whoo boy.
so we’re at dinner and i say, dad i know about sex… haven’t had it yet, but like i know about it.
he says i only wanted to tell you this one thing: don’t ever let anybody fuck you. if you want to fuck them, that’s fine. but don’t EVER let anybody fuck you.
holy shit. what did he just say?
and then we both started laughing.
my father gave me one hell of a gift: the knowledge and confidence to own myself. to own my decisions. to be my own person.
yeah, you own yourself and you give yourself… don’t ever let anybody take anything you are unwilling to give.
but when you let go, let giving yourself be a completing act. because it’s love we all want, so make it about loving somebody.
then sex is a playground, an archeological dig. it’s absurd, a comedy, a vacation of hours… it’s making poetry in grunts and groans. it’s about that slow reveal… the getting there…
maybe, when we stop letting others define us
maybe, when we stop letting life define us
maybe, when we start defining ourselves
we’ll stop creating worlds in which we hate to live

instruments of change or of doom and gloom
there are two very good essays on the front page examining the ways in which your mortgages or home equity loans can explode in your face. what can be done about this? do we unleash this info and get our state legistlators enacting some kind of laws, even temporary, that prevent such a thing from happening?
there are so many great commentaries at this and other blogs about the tough and dire straits in which we find ourselves.
but i find myself shrinking away from reading anything more. i can barely open a blog for fear of what i might read next.

i want to stop feeling so damned bad
it’s like walking on a tight rope. without a net. it takes everything to put one foot in front of other and keep from falling.
it’s wobbly most of the time. it seems inevitable. i will fall into the canyon below.

Pony Open Thread: Whatever happened to the old fashioned idea of a blow job…
that’s all… just asking… because when politics corrupts even that, then we are in trouble…
so fuck the politicians and i don’t mean that in a good way.
tell me, what besides san diego burning, pete stark apologizing, and the general sad state of affairs, do we have to talk about?
we need a break. as 73rd says, the floor is open. or does she say the floor is yours…
