Soldier balks at deploying; says Obama isn’t president

Original article, by Lily Gordon and subtitled Says he shouldn’t have to go to Afghanistan because Obama is not a U.S. citizen, via ledger-enquirer.com:

U.S. Army Maj. Stefan Frederick Cook, set to deploy to Afghanistan, says he shouldn’t have to go.

His reason?

Barack Obama was never eligible to be president because he wasn’t born in the United States.

Two articles on Honduras

The first, Honduras: US-backed mediation legitimizes military coup, by Bill Van Auken via World Socialist Web Site:

The talks convened in the Costa Rican capital San José on Thursday with the purported aim of resolving the political crisis unleashed by the June 28 coup in neighboring Honduras, are shaping up as a farce. The apparent object of this fraudulent exercise is to legitimize the military overthrow of the elected president of Honduras and realize the aims of Washington and the predominant sections of the right-wing Honduran oligarchy.

Score one for the bulls in Pamplona

Well, it doesn’t happen very often, but the bulls added to the Darwin Awards candidates in Pamplona:

An interview with an Iranian socialist: “Electoral Fraud” and the movement in Iran today

Original article, by Ted Sprague and subtitled Millions of Iranians have come out on the streets demanding a change in regime. The movement that was first sparked off by “electoral fraud” has become a movement to demand complete democratic rights and against the dictatorship of the Islamic Republic of Iran. This is an interview (conducted on July 2nd 2009) with Arash Azizi, an Iranian socialist, which was originally made to explain the situation in Iran to an Indonesian audience, via In Defence of Marxism:

Ted Sprague: Can you explain to our readers about the electoral fraud in Iran and the movement that has emerged out of it?

Some questions after an interesting few weeks.

It’s been quite interesting the past few weeks as far as what’s been going on and the blogosphere’s reaction towards the happenings. I thought it might be a good idea to ask some questions and see what the responses are. I have my own thoughts, of course, but it would be interesting to see yours and the reasoning behind them.

Free the Gaza 21!

It’s rather interesting to read various ‘progressive’ and left blogs about the capture of the Gaza 21. Let’s face it, the response has been splotchy at best. There have been several, such as Dandelion Salad, which have made the right choice (IMHO) on the issue. They’re calling for the release of the Gaza 21. I think they also understand that if it were any other crisis which this happened in, everyone not on the right would be calling for their release.

Total Victory At Lindsey

Original article, by Steve Kelly,UNITE London Construction Branch member, via Socialist Appeal (UK):

On Monday 29th June the workers at Lindsey agreed to return to work with heads held high.It was a magnificent result and all those involved deserve a great round of applause. The dispute began when 51 scaffolders were sacked at Lindsey and refused employment with another contractor on the site. They were regarded as troublemakers by management. The rest of the workers immediately downed tools in support of them.

What is behind the media’s venomous attack on striking Toronto city workers?

Original article, by Keith Jones, via World Socialist Web Site:

Toronto’s 24,000 city workers, now in their second week of strike action, have been the target of a concerted, venomous attack by Toronto’s corporate media.

When workers stand together, the oligarchy shudders.

Day after day, the Globe and Mail, National Post, Toronto Sun, and Star have churned out columns and editorials castigating the modestly paid inside and outside workers for “enjoy[ing] perks that others can only dream of”-perks like the “notorious” paid sick days that they “selfishly” refuse to give up.

Paid sick days are perks that others can only dream of? C’mon. If the writers at the papers don’t get paid sick leave, then they should be on strike, too!

White House health care forum: Obama’s plan for “evidence-based” medical cuts

Original article, by Kate Randall, via World Socialist Web Site:

A White House forum on health care provided some insight into the Obama administration’s vision for a reform of the system. In the ABC News program “Questions for the President: Prescription for America,” broadcast Wednesday night, Obama outlined proposals for a revamped health care system in which medical services would be subject to “evidence-based” analysis and the profits of the insurance giants would remain intact.
