Music for the Big Game

Queen:  We Will Rock You

Friday Philosophy: On Whimsy

Sometimes it all seems futile.  I teach and teach and teach, wondering if one day, even some day soon, I will get the opportunity to talk about the things which really matter, about the way the world is and how to make it better for some of us who could use the improvement.

Then I run into someone who puts me back to square one, wondering if anything I have taught has survived…or how many other people are out there who feel the same way as the culprit.

So what do I do?  Go back to the beginning and start anew?  Maybe with some variation on the theme?

What else is there?

High Desert

Below the vast cerulean above

enlivening an endless

canvas of assorted browns

lies a short barrel cactus

crowned by a yellow flower

with red streaks

topping the cylindrical body

which wears

lethal looking spines

warning me

to keep my distance

Crevices

After the Thrill of Living is Gone

Is this an arroyo in the desert

or a pass through a mountain chain?

Is it a opening in my mind

or a convolution in my brain?

Oh, yeah…life goes on.

Am I more like a krill in Mono Lake

or a whale who swims the sea?

Am I a caged up mountain lion

or a springbok, bounding free?

Oh, yeah…life goes on.

Are the currents in the rivers

or are they my uncertainty?

Will I ever find the words

to describe all that I see?

Oh, yeah…life goes on.

Are we gorillas behind glass

or porpoises in pools?

Have we walled the world away from us

because we can use tools?

Oh, yeah…life goes on.

Awkwardly I ask the air

am I living in a bowl?

It’s probably time to listen to

the music in my soul.

Long after the thrill…

Loose Thread

Clarity

Peace

without Justice

is just another name

for War

War

is only defeated

when its offspring

are not born

The spread of Justice

is the nutrient

for Peace

and the abortifacient

for War

Standing in the Back

Remaining Behind

Here

Let me give you a boost

a leg up as it were

as you try to scramble

over that wall

a shoulder to stand on

to crack that ceiling

a helping hand in breaking

through that barrier

I’m sure your life

will be so much better

over there, up there,

out there

while we wait here

trying to find

someone else

to help

There are no limits

to the barriers, ceilings, walls

that we humans encounter

and no end to those

which can be surmounted

if we work together

…no limits

except not mattering

Café Discovery: Holiday Train Show – public spaces

Earlier this month Debbie and I trekked to the Bronx on a very cold day, to the New York Botanical Garden, in order to see the Holiday Train Show.

I’ve got to say up front that we went because Debbie is a train fan and has a small collection of models.  We were extremely disappointed in the train portion of the train show.  But the buildings were magnificent!

Mostly, if not all organic, the historical models of New York’s architectural past were well worth the visit.

Up today are some of the public spaces.  Coming in the future will be the private dwellings, commercial enterprises, bridges, trains, and churches included in the exhibit of more than 140 models.

Clicking on the graphics will often reward you with a larger view.

Friday Philosophy: Waiting for whatever comes next

Waiting.

I should be good at it by now.  I have decades of experience.

The time floats on, those minutes fly by

You wanna go, but just you try, guy

You wanna see her

You wanna see her, oh yeah

So you wait, you wait and wait

Girl don’t come

In my case, “you want to be her” were the words in my ears…for years and years and years.  But the words have often been slightly wrong.

So the waiting goes on.

Keep waiting.  Our hopes and dreams will be fulfilled…some day.

Someday soon.  Just you wait.
