Peace

Resistance

You desire that I engage

in discussion

concerning the relative value

of War

You wonder

why I resist

The only wars

having merit

are the ones

too seldom fought

When do we fight

hunger and disease

bigotry and ignorance

neglect and greed?

Fighting these doesn’t require

armed conflict

but rather the engagement

the minds and hearts

the imagination and cooperation

of good people

Will we never try?

Weaving Reality

The WeaveMothers were alternately amused and perplexed.  Weaving SpaceTime is a daunting task.  But the die had been cast ThereThen.

Those self-programmable units would have to be the answer.  At least for now, the spot weaving of the tapestry would have to rely on those limited creatures.  If only they didn’t have the bugs that caused them to sometimes go around and around in circles, sometimes get lost in mazes of amazing complexity, and too often fail to cooperate with each other in their common task.

But Uncertainty would always have the upper hand.

And it was quite worrying that they seem to have decided to create rules which were limiting their progress, cutting themselves off from some of the capabilities they had been created to use.

One of the WeaveMothers noticed a spot.  Mostly what might be called its eyes…its visual sensors, if vision was the right concept…were on the whole , but every once in a great while there were units which shown brightly.  Rarer still some of these units came together and produced the newness that expanded the possibilities instead of shrinking them.

It might pay to keep an eye on this group, if only for the brightness it seems to produce.

Breaking Dawn

Songs that voices seldom share

Does it matter

if you hear me

When the morning comes

I’ll be there by your side

–Harry Nilsson

Can you hear me?

Does it matter

if words adapt

to three-part harmony?

Are you waking?

Will you stop here

to share yourself

so everyone can see?

And in the morning

when I am here

I may be spreading

a good thought

And sometime later

when you stop by

will anything of substance

have been taught?

Can you hear me?

Does it matter?

…the lessons are waiting.

One of the problems I face every year at this time is the need to decompress.  If I’m not careful, I can decompress for hours on end.  While my body mends, my writing can stagnate.

Maybe if I work back into this slowly, it won’t necessarily be painful.

Last Sunday I sort of promised a response to NLinStPaul’s When the student is ready….

Pardon me for posting a comment as an essay.

Lurking

Blueprint

A notion

and intention

initially

Ideas congeal

words emerge

slide into place

some locked

some fit

to be tumbled

pliantly capable

of movement

until unity forms

Structural collapse

conceptual disintigration

and verbal desertion

are neighbors

skulking

on the other side

of walls too thin

The Lure of the Gold

Entitlement

Shouldn’t entitlement

be an increasing function?

Should not our children

be entitled

to more freedom

liberty, joy

and happiness

than we were?

Shouldn’t their children

if they have any

deserve still more?

Or do you speak

of material things?

Do you look to me

as the reason

you don’t have more?

Friday Philosophy: Addressing the Future

It always takes a few days to turn the switch.

There are still teaching things to attend to over the summer, some of which will be fairly onerous, like building an evaluation instrument for one of our computer literacy classes, a mechanism by which students can test out of the course.  Our students do not come from the burbs, for the most part.  They are what is euphemistically now called “urban.”  Inner-city New Jersey.  They do not generally come complete with computer skills beyond texting and MySpace/Facebook.  Email is a foreign substance, except that you have to have an email address to sign up for things.  I just got half of the gig to build a fair assessment instrument for $1000.

And I maybe need to design a Special Topics class for fall (unless it gets canceled for lack of enrollment) .  The topic is Internet Support Tools.  I may be bugging the shit out of some of you because the topic is blogs, wikis, widgets, RSS feeds, etc.  I suppose I’ll need to learn some stuff myself so I can teach it.  Maybe we can figure out a way for my students to wander around behind the scenes of Docudharma for a bit. 🙂

But that’s the me who is a teacher.  Summer is the time for working on grand ideas…my life’s work, so to speak…for weaving the next layer on the tapestry.

And for that I have to go…

Pooling

Absolutely Nothing

War

Huh!  Good God, y’all!

What is it good for?

War is good

for making the rich richer

those mongers

who profit

from human suffering

and tragedy

It matters not

if they benefit from victory

by one side or the other

only that War

continue somewhere

forever

And War is good

for spreading

that suffering and tragedy

along with hatred

death and the disintegration

of human society

What more could anyone want?

At the Nub

Truth

Stripped

of pretense

scraped down

to the nub

bathed in

the acid

of reality

Truth

is coated by

no varnish

No twisting

spinning

bending

stretching

can alter it

Truth is inviolate

but there are many

pretenders

Broken Dreams

Self-absorption

I’ve seen your claims

that you desire

a better world

Why is changing

your behavior

not a footstep

along that path?

Spectacle

Speculation

One day

maybe

the world will be

as I envision it

But that will be

in some far distant

day to come

and this is now

It is improbable

that I will see

and experience

my vision

Change occurs

too slowly

or perhaps

aging occurs

too fast

Pathway

Life Stories

What would

you tell

the protagonist

of your story

to do

if you could?

Why aren’t you

living your life

so that

those events

could happen?

The deeper question:

Am I?
