1 Illegal trade in whale meat points to Japan: DNA study

AFP

Tue Apr 13, 7:08 pm ET

PARIS (AFP) – Whale meat sold secretly at a sushi restaurant in Los Angeles and another in Seoul can be linked to Japanese whaling, a trade that would breach global rules on protected species, scientists said Wednesday.

Japan carries out whaling under what it says is a programme of scientific research, although it does not hide the fact that the meat is later sold in Japanese shops and restaurants.

But trading this meat is not allowed with countries that have signed provisions protecting whales under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES).

1 Ousted Kyrgyz president sets terms for resignation

by Matt Siegel, AFP

TEYIT, Kyrgyzstan (AFP) – Kyrgyzstan’s toppled president Kurmanbek Bakiyev Tuesday offered to resign for the first time since he was ousted in protests, but only if he received security guarantees from his foes.

His offer came after the interim authorities warned Bakiyev that the country’s special forces would arrest him if he failed to surrender and carried on holding rallies in his southern stronghold where he fled after the uprising.

But with still no compromise in sight and the interim government seeking to assert its authority in the capital after the protests that left 83 dead, the strategic Central Asian country, home to a key US airbase, remained dangerously on the edge.

1 Poland crash pilots had been warned: investigators

by Anna Malpas, AFP

1 hr 50 mins ago

MOSCOW (AFP) – The pilots of a plane that crashed and killed Poland’s president had received explicit weather warnings before they attempted to land at a fog-bound Russian airport, investigators said on Monday.

Russian officials said flight data showed traffic controllers recommended the crew divert to another airport while Polish prosecutors said there was no indication they were pressured by those onboard to override the advice.

As crews battled to retrieve bodies from the wreckage of a crash that killed 96 people, including much of Poland’s elite, experts also struggled to identify mutilated remains.

1 Dead president flown home to grief-stricken Poland

by Maja Czarnecka, AFP

Sun Apr 11, 9:44 am ET

WARSAW (AFP) – The body of Poland’s late president arrived back home Sunday as his stunned nation mourned the loss of much of its elite in a jet crash in Russia that investigators said was not due to technical faults.

Draped in a red and white Polish flag, the coffin bearing Lech Kaczynski was carried onto a red carpet at Warsaw Airport, where it was met by his identical twin brother Jaroslaw, a former premier, and a presidential guard of honour.

Before his body was flown home, Poles observed a two-minute silence on the stroke of midday, which was marked by the wailing of sirens.

SMOLENSK, Russia (AFP) – A Soviet-era jet carrying Polish president Lech Kaczynski and much of the military and state elite crashed in thick fog in Russia on Saturday killing all 96 people on board in a blazing inferno.

The Tupolev Tu-154 was taking Kaczynski and his wife, the military chief of staff and other top officers, central bank governor, deputy foreign minister, members of parliament and other senior officials to a memorial ceremony for thousands of Polish troops massacred by Russian forces in World War II.

The jet hit treetops in fog as it approached the runway at Smolensk airport in western Russia and broke up in flames, regional governor Sergei Antufiev said.

AFP

1 hr 23 mins ago

BISHKEK (AFP) – Kyrgyzstan’s interim leader on Friday promised ousted president Kurmanbek Bakiyev safe passage out of the strategic Central Asia nation, but only if he stands down.

“Bakiyev still has a chance to leave the country,” Roza Otunbayeva told reporters in the capital Bishkek, during an official day of mourning for the scores of people who died in this week’s uprising.

But the former foreign minister warned, “We will only guarantee his personal safety if he resigns.”

1 Toppled Kyrgyz president refuses to quit

by Matt Siegel and Tolkun Namatbayeva, AFP

BISHKEK (AFP) – The toppled president of Kyrgyzstan defied calls to resign Thursday after a bloody people’s uprising as the country’s new rulers announced plans for elections and the disbanding of parliament.

As Russia and the European Union vowed to support an interim government, the man chased from power after a five-year rule said the nation faced catastrophe.

Although his exact whereabouts were unknown, Kurmanbek Bakiyev told Russian radio he was in southern Kyrgyzstan and had no plans “to leave at the moment”, and released a statement insisting that he would not throw in the towel.

On Making Coal Mining Safer, Or, “It’s The Fines, Stupid!”

By now more or less everyone is aware that there has been a disastrous mining accident in West Virginia this week.

There are many people dead, and at the time this is written it is still possible that survivors might be found.

We don’t know much about why these disasters happen, for the most part, and we don’t really understand how to make things better.

Today, I’m here to fix some of that.

By the end of today’s story, you’ll understand a lot more about why people die in mines than you do now-and as an extra bonus, we’ll also discuss a radical new way to bring market forces into the process of making mines safer.

BISHKEK (AFP) – Opponents of President Kurmanbek Bakiyev took control Wednesday of Kyrgyzstan after a day of spectacular violence that ended with Bakiyev fleeing the capital of the strategic Central Asian state.

Opposition protesters seized the presidential administration Wednesday night and announced on state radio that they had formed a provisional government with former foreign minister Roza Otunbayeva at its head.

A worker at Bishkek’s international airport told AFP that the 60-year-old Bakiyev had fled the capital aboard a small plane as his opponents consolidated their grip on key national institutions.

1 Australian PM calls ship accident ‘outrageous’

by Madeleine Coorey, AFP

Tue Apr 6, 6:34 am ET

SYDNEY (AFP) – Australia’s leader Tuesday voiced anger over a coal carrier which ran aground and spewed oil over the Great Barrier Reef, as officials probed why the ship ran off course in the world heritage site.

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd called the Chinese-owned Shen Neng 1’s accident “outrageous” and warned the badly damaged ship, which is stranded on a shoal, remained a serious threat to one of the world’s great environmental treasures.

“This remains a serious situation. It remains a serious threat to the Great Barrier Reef,” Rudd said after flying over the crash site off Australia’s northeast.

Guantanamo war court resumes hearings amid uncertainty

Photobucket

GUANTANAMO BAY, Cuba – Still operating under Bush-era policies that President Barack Obama last year called “a mess,” the Pentagon will resume military commission hearings for accused terrorists Wednesday in a top secret compound originally designed for the trial of alleged 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheik Mohammed.

War court critics denounced the decision to go ahead with hearings this week, saying that without new rules that the Obama administration has yet to complete, the commissions are operating with uncertain procedures.

“It’s really like a lame duck commission,” bristled Mike Berrigan, deputy chief defense counsel.

Among the questions the lack of a new manual of procedures leaves unanswered is whether a defendant could enter a guilty plea in a case where he might face the death penalty. Under military law, such a confession isn’t allowed, a requirement that stymied earlier efforts to try the 9/11 conspirators after they offered to confess to a judge directly without empanelling a jury.

1 Blasts rock Baghdad killing 35

by Ammar Karim, AFP

2 hrs 48 mins ago

BAGHDAD (AFP) – Six bombs rocked Baghdad killing at least 35 people Tuesday, the second time the capital has come under attack in three days, fuelling fears insurgents are making a return due to a political impasse.

The explosions destroyed residential buildings in mostly Shiite neighbourhoods, with Baghdad security spokesman Major General Qassim Atta saying four of the bombs detonated inside the buildings.

“Six bomb attacks in several neighbourhoods of Baghdad occurred, and seven buildings collapsed,” an interior ministry official told AFP, speaking on condition of anonymity.
