On Keeping Your Allies As Allies

There can be no doubt we face many problems and crises as a nation at this time. Most of these are the direct results of the misanthropic mismanagement of the Republican Party over the last eight years of so. This combined with a change in controlling party has put the Democrats and a the Political Left in general in a place where they are expected to clean up the mess and do it right now. This is a huge opportunity, but it will only happen if we can stay together as a coalition. This is the challenge the Dog would like to talk about today.

Ek Hornbeck, Come Home!

     We miss you buddy!

We know you made some people mad recently, but I forgive you. I know your heart is in a good place and there are a lot of people who just don’t get it, but we miss you and we want you to come home.

We need more people to knock some fucking heads around out there. Too many people are happy with next to nothing, and they look at us like we are weird when we go back up to the man and ask for “More Please”

Well, I don’t want more, I want the whole damn thing!

So come on home, Ek. We miss you.

I’ll leave a light on on the porch for you, buddy.

    Hopefully we’ll see you soon.

Whom Do You Trust?

There is a book by Vernor Vinge called a Fire Upon the Deep. It is a great space opera read, but that is not what this post is about. In the book there are many alien civilizations that use an intra-galactic network to communicate with each other. It is obviously modeled on the early internet. In this book it is often called “The Net of a Thousand Lies” as there is no way to verify every piece of information posted on it by ever poster. This too is similar to the internet. Which leads to the Dog’s question today; how do you decide what to trust and what to ignore?

Public School Competition hasn’t Undercut Private Schools …

How to Stop Socialized Health Care

Five arguments Republicans must make.

By KARL ROVE – Wall Street Journal – JUNE 11, 2009

If Democrats enact a public-option health-insurance program, America is on the way to becoming a European-style welfare state. To prevent this from happening, there are five arguments Republicans must make.

The first is it’s unnecessary.

But 1,300 companies sell health insurance plans. That’s competition enough.

Second, a public option will undercut private insurers and pass the tab to taxpayers and health providers just as it does in existing government-run programs. …

Third, government-run health insurance would crater the private insurance market, forcing most Americans onto the government plan. …

Fourth, the public option is far too expensive.

Fifth, the public option puts government firmly in the middle of the relationship between patients and their doctors. …

Link to this WSJ screed.

Oh pity the poor little Private Insurers — they’ll just wilt in the face of any Competition from the big bad Public Option!

Poor Babies —  WAAAAAAHHH!

If not Obama, then who?

Buhdydharma has asked some good questions.  Who is our friend if not President Obama?  If President Obama isn’t going to work for us, who do we turn to?

My response coming up…

Private vs Public Options — What’s the Difference?

Private vs. Public Schools: What’s the Difference?

Your goal is to find a school that will meet your child’s needs. But how do you choose between a public school and a private school?

[… interesting list of Pros and Cons …]

The Bottom Line

There are a few fundamental differences between public and private schools, but here’s the bottom line: There are great private schools and there are great public schools. The trick is finding the school that best fits your child’s needs. You may also want to consider public charter schools or homeschooling. It’s a good idea to research the schools that interest you and, to get a true picture of the school, visit in person.

Has Competition from Public Education “killed” the thriving Industry of Private Education?

Hardly!

Neither will Competition from a Public Option in Health Care, “kill” the thriving Industry of Private Insurance — assuming they actually have a Product, that People are willing to pay for!

and if they don’t …?

damn. “they” strike again.

Humans are amazing. It’s not just that we never ever seem to learn from past mistakes, but that we, in our chosen collectives; ie religious/ ethnic racial political blocs, exempt ourselves from our respective contributions to the epic failures of this first decade in this new century.

I fear, the truth is that the fault, dear Democrats/progressives/liberals, lies not in our stars, but in ourselves . . . if we are underlings.

Clear rules, equally enforced.

I’m going to provide another space for this, but mostly in the hope that people who feel the need to vent do it here and not bother those who are looking for a different experience.

It is ok to talk about dKos here, we don’t allow kos bashing.

dKos talks about dKos all the time.  It’s an enormously self referential place.  If it’s ok to talk about it there it’s ok to talk about it here (with the exception of I/P).

That said, most people come here because we offer original and offbeat content in a respectful and laid back atmosphere.  Harshing the mellow doesn’t help you.

Even more than dKos we seek to make it difficult for you to harm each other while still allowing you to express negative opinions.

Because we’re Dirty Fucking Hippies.

If someone gives you a Wrong! it’s not only allowed but likely a mistake.  Ignore it.  If you are easily offended you need a gentler hobby than blogging anyway.

Most of the problems that lead people to think they’re being singled out here are software glitches that when identified we are seeking to work out with pacified who has a much closer relationship with On The Bus than with me.

I personally am not much concerned about what you post in your individual essays unless I’m considering you for promotion and even less so with comments, but if you are looking to enlighten and persuade being confrontational is unlikely to achieve your goals.

But we don’t enforce politeness either.

What Is The Story With Your Handle?

Lets start with the meat of this essay, there is no meat. If you came by looking for issues or action or insight (not that you get a lot of the last from the Dog anyway) you are SOL, that’s right you are a Slovenian On Leave. However if you are looking for a place to be a little silly, to let your hair down and get to know a little something about your fellow community members, well you are in the right place!

Can We Quit Talking About Daily Kos?

Disclaimer: If you are not doing what the Dog is talking about in this essay, then it is not directed at you! So, please don’t take offense where the Dog did not offer it.

This has been said by the Admins but the Dog is going to make his own plea about this. For the love the Flying Spaghetti Monster could we just not rehash all the shit from Daily Kos?

The Dog knows there are a bunch of folks who were banned there or left because of banning or policies or because they did not like the tone. The thing is by bringing this up constantly you are not actually making this site any better.

Morning Meta

This morning I’m going to feature the essays of TP_Alexander.  He’s working on a book and publishes the chapters periodically.

Like Something The Dog Said is starting up.

I want to make it clear that these are the exact kind of projects that I like to see expressed on DocuDharma.  They are the kind of thing that is easily overlooked at a faster paced blog.  We allow three posts a day so you do not feel constrained to highlight only your best work, it can be as silly or profound as you wish.

Sometimes you can feel ignored because of the lack of comments, but if you examine influential blogs like tbogg or attackerman (I recommend subscriptions at Firedog Lake’s Oxdown Gazette and OpenLeft so you can crosspost appropriate content) or Booman Tribune and My Left Wing) you’ll see that is not atypical for creative content.

I tend to highlight the political, but I recognize the artistic.

I Just Don’t Get It.

Photobucket

Nope.  I honestly do not.

I have noticed, in my meanderings through the political tubes, however, that I am surrounded by people not only who do get it, but who consider anyone who does not to be a moron.  These must be very, very exceptionally intelligent people, because while they seem entirely self-assured in their vast knowledge of pretty much everything, I remain entirely self-assured that in all that there is to know, I know virtually nothing.

{More gibberish below the fold.)
