On Fighting The Madness, Or, Send This To A Deather

We are coming down to the home stretch on healthcare, and we have seen the results of the first couple of rounds of crazy that have been sent forth in an effort to stop the process.

In addition to the Town Halls, opponents are flooding the email inboxes of America’s “low information” voters with no end of lies. Those emails are getting passed around and around and around, and by now some of them have probably appeared in your inbox.

But it’s summer…and who has time to respond to this stuff?

Well, guess what, Gentle Reader: I’ve already done the hard work for you.

Today’s story is an email response that you can send right back to your “inbox friends”. It’s a reminder of some of the frustrations that we all share in this country and some explanations of what’s being proposed…and a few words about socialism, to boot.

So get out there and copy and paste and forward and reply, and let’s see if we can’t fight the madness, one email at a time.

THE REAL DEATH PANELS: Insurance Companies That Deny Care

Linda Peeno, M.D.

In the spring of 1987, as a Physician, I denied a man a necessary operation, that would have saved his life. And thus caused his death. And I’m haunted by the thousands of pieces of paper, on which I have written that deadly word: Denied.

Yeah, What He Said

Great Op-Ed in the Times yesterday:

PRESIDENT OBAMA’S apparent readiness to backtrack on the public insurance option in his health care package is not just a concession to his political opponents – this fixation on securing bipartisan support for health care reform suggests that the Democratic Party has forgotten how to govern and the White House has forgotten how to lead.

This was not true of Franklin Roosevelt and the Democratic Congresses that enacted the New Deal. With the exception of the Emergency Banking Act of 1933 (which gave the president authority to close the nation’s banks and which passed the House of Representatives unanimously), the principal legislative innovations of the 1930s were enacted over the vigorous opposition of a deeply entrenched minority. Majority rule, as Roosevelt saw it, did not require his opponents’ permission.

When Roosevelt asked Congress to establish the Tennessee Valley Authority to provide cheap electric power for the impoverished South, he did not consult with utility giants like Commonwealth and Southern. When he asked for the creation of a Securities and Exchange Commission to curb the excesses of Wall Street, he did not request the cooperation of those about to be regulated. When Congress passed the Glass-Steagall Act divesting investment houses of their commercial banking functions, the Democrats did not need the approval of J. P. Morgan, Goldman Sachs or Lehman Brothers.

Roosevelt relished the opposition of vested interests. He fashioned his governing majority by deliberately attacking those who favored the status quo. His opponents hated him – and he profited from their hatred. “Never before in all our history have these forces been so united against one candidate as they stand today,” he told a national radio audience on the eve of the 1936 election. “They are unanimous in their hatred for me – and I welcome their hatred.”

My only difference would be to point out that Obama didn’t “forget” to lead. He never knew how in the first place.  When he came to Daily Kos to chastise us for being too shrill, his big argument was that the American people don’t share our views of politics, so we need to be more conciliatory.

In my rebuttal diary, which incidentally knocked his diary off the #1 spot on the rec list, I argued that they don’t share our views because they’ve been lied to for years and someone needs to stand up and tell them the truth.

“It is not enough to take a poll and decide what can be done. We must change perceptions so that we may do what must be done. We must educate. We must persuade. We must lead.

Senator Obama says our perspective “misreads the American people.” I say we need a lot less reading and a lot more leading.”

Obama responded to my rebuttal with this:

I also agree that it is the job of Democratic elected officials to help shape public opinion, and not just respond passively to opinion thats been aggressively shaped by the Republicans PR machinery.  I am simply suggesting, based on my experience, that people will respond to a powerfully progressive agenda when its couched in optimism, pragmatism and our shared American ideals.

Yeah, it sounded good. But it was complete BS. Obama has had the greatest opportunity of any president in my lifetime to reform public opinion on a score of issues from the role and importance of government to the dangers of too big to fail institutions and monopolies.

Instead he sent out Larry Summers to lie about the economy and tell everyone it’s all coming up daisies.

Obama is a decent orator, though utterly and completely over-rated, but he is not a leader. He’s another Ivy League technocrat. He should have gone back to teaching, churning out more little technocrats. God knows we need more of those.

We did NOT Vote for Triggers — We DID Vote for …

Barack Obama , Feb 19, 2008

Well, The System’s Broken […] Certainly I don’t accept, in the richest county on Earth, that we should have 47 Million people without Health Insurance, and Millions of more people being bankrupted because of a Medical Bill.

[…]

As President of the United States, what I’ve proposed to do, is to make sure that we got a plan that covers ALL Americans.

[…]

The key to making this happen, is to overcome the resistance we’re going to see from Drug Companies, Insurance Companies, HMO’s. Over the last 10 years alone, Drug and Insurance Companies spent over $1 Billion, in preventing Health Care Reform from happening. That’s going to require then, a mobilization of energy among the American People, to insist on a Congress and a White House, that are actually going to deliver this time.

[…]

(emphasis added)

Sherrod Brown UNLOADS!

Sherrod Brown has come out with some pretty strong language in an interview he gave today over at TPM. It’s great to see a progressive in the Senate giving the White House the what for!

The Scam that is Big Pharma, Swine Flu, and You

Gee, it’s kind of funny how this has been somewhat under the radar as far as the U.S. corporate media goes:

Pfizer Agrees to Pay Largest Healthcare Fraud Penalty in History

Yup, you read that right.  Big Pharma, which is personified by the Bigger-Than-Big Pharma company known as Pfizer, is guilty as sin of defrauding Americans in regards to their health.   This isn’t just stealing money, this is fucking with people’s HEALTH.

US drugmaker Pfizer has agreed to pay $2.3bn (£1.4bn) in the largest healthcare fraud settlement in the history of the Department of Justice.

It comes after the firm was found to have illegally promoted four drugs for uses which had not been approved by medical regulators.

A subsidiary of the firm pleaded guilty to misbranding drugs “with the intent to defraud or mislead”.

US officials said Pfizer would have to enter a corporate integrity agreement.

That last bit just about made me spit my coffee across the screen.  A “corporate integrity agreement”?   WTF is THAT?   I know, it’s a training program that teaches you how not to get caught.  You buy the workbooks from Neil Bush’s company, you know it’s sort of a “No Corporation Left Behind” type of thing.

These are the people Obama met with behind closed doors.   These are the people promising us “health care”.

More importantly, these are the people who want to mass-vaccinate us this fall for this “swine flu” swindle.

Now check this out.   Are you sitting down?

WHO Admits to Releasing Pandemic Virus into Population via ‘Mock-Up’ Vaccines

Yes, the World Health Organization is admitting to allowing European researchers to releasing “mock up” vaccines which contain viruses which people haven’t been exposed to people in a while, in order to “speed up” the regulatory process for the vaccines.

“Speed up the regulatory process” = “making money, lots of it, quicker”.

Public Option Open Thread

When “Public Options” Serve the Public – and When They Don’t

by: Lawrence S. Wittner, t r u t h o u t | Perspective, Thursday 03 September 2009

Currently, there is nothing more controversial in President Barack Obama’s health care reform proposal than the “public option.” Much of the controversy, of course, has been generated by private insurance companies, determined to safeguard their hefty profits, and by Republican politicians, eager to destroy anything that might redound to the benefit of the Democrats. Even so, a little clear thinking on the subject of public programs might illuminate their advantages and disadvantages.

Real. People. Dying. Unnecessarily.

Real people … who we knew and loved … who died unnecessarily in the U.S.

Real Life Stories of Americans

THE SILENT … NOW DECEASED

“My daughter got sick with cancer after her husband lost his job. She never told anyone she was sick because she knew the financial hardship it would cause and eventually the hospital would take their house for unpaid medical bills. We lost her in the following spring … We read her diary and learned all she was feeling and thinking. Now I wonder how many others are just like her in this America? And how many before her?”

“Trying to get the President KILLED” Dan Savage NAILS it all, from “the Birchers to the Birthers”

Crossposted at Daily Kos

This might be the most thorough assesment of the Republican party, the media, The Religious Right, Michele Bachmann, Glenn Beck, you name it, Dan Savage nails it. In an interview with Keith Olbermann, Dan Savage lays the truth down, hashes it up for all to see and then serves it with a bag of chips and a cup of STFU for the GOP.

Dan Savage:     I really do think the Michelle Bachmanns of the world and the Glenn Becks of the world are actively and, consciously or subconsciously, trying to get, I’m just gonna say it, trying to get the President killed.

Health Care Desperation

Recently, with what is seemingly the whole political world anxiously awaiting the outcome of the so-called reform of health care in America, I’ve started to feel desperate, lonely, and hopeless.  And I’m as far from a teabagger as you can get!

If you’ve got two eyes and a brain, it’s impossible not to see that the corporate domination of our government is ruining any chance of true universal health care coming out of the “Obamacare” bill.  Pharmaceutical companies, the insurance industry, and their partners-in-crime shoved single-payer off the table and now they’re trying to do the same with the public option, a kind of single-payer-lite that is the last hope of many progressives for decent reform.  Obama and a majority of the Democrats in Congress have not been able to stand up to special interests enough to really protect the interests of the American people.  And perhaps they don’t want to.

Yelling Louder WORKS! Senator Bennet’s and Mark Udall’s response to activism at work!

Earlier today wrote a diary about how the Bloomfield, Colorado Democratic party got up and Yelled Louder at their Senators and Representative.

Well, I have now received my SECOND response from the Congressmen in question, first from Congressmen Jared Polis (D-CO7)

, and now from Senator Bennet staff. Looks like Senator Bennet (D-CO) has gone public with his support of a Public Option.

Check it out here.

Michael Bennet supports a public option

This morning we released a video outlining Michael Bennet’s support for a public option.  I’ve embedded it here.  Watch it to hear Michael express his support for a public option in his own words.

During this work period, Michael has been traveling all across Colorado discussing the urgent need to reform our broken health care system.  He’s held town halls and discussions in Aurora, Durango, Edwards, Frisco, Grand Junction, Highlands Ranch, Ouray and Telluride.  Videos of these discussions can be viewed at http://BennetForColorado.com/…

Any health care reform bill should control costs, allow people to keep their own medical plan and their own doctor, increase competition, and increase coverage — all in a fiscally responsible way. Providing patients with a public insurance option — that increases competition and drives down prices — would help to achieve these goals.

YES! CO Dems tell Udall, Bennet: No PO = No Soup For You! (Updated w/ comment by Rep. Polis)

  Crossposted at Daily Kos

Be it resolved: The Executive Committee of the Broomfield Democrats on this date, on behalf of the party members, the county declares it’s support for President Obama’s call for a Robust Public Option health care plan . . . one  that is an intergal part of comprehensive reform that all Americans have access to quality basic health care irrespective of health conditions, socio-economic status or employment status. The present opportunity for true health care reform that meets the above objectives is too fragile and omportant to our nation for it to be lost to the politics of special interests.

It should be clear by this proclamation that all elected officials and candidates for office desiring support of our party, either by financial or by ballot must evidence clear support for this resolution as stated. This applies to our Democratic colleauges Sen. Udall, Sen. Bennet and Representative Polis as well as any other candidates seeking office in the city and county of Broomfield, Colorado.

We’re hammering Colorado Dems into line today.

Join me below the fold to get in on the action.
