The Change; Hope

It is said, as individuals, we can achieve all we conceive, if only we truly believe.  President Barack Obama once knew this.  He lived this veracity.  Indeed, candidate Obama’s audacity and accomplishments gave Americans hope.  When Barack Obama reached for the sky he realized what no one thought he could. The electorate was energized.  People came to expect the country was in for a change.   Now, it seems Mister Obama is bogged down by what Eisenhower understood, concerns of the Military Industrial Complex.

The intricacy of the Armed Forces mission does not confine itself to forceful martial escalation.  Nothing escapes the wide reach of combative nation building.  Lives are lost.  Limbs crushed.  With bullets ablaze, brains are battered or blown to smithereens.  Hope suffers.  Hearts are hurt.

It’s Time To Put Our Penis Back in Our Pants

Back in the 1980s I worked for Greenpeace for a while, and ended up on an action in upstate NY that was targeting toxic waste dumping.  The concept of the action was to get expert climbers to put huge banners up, and at the same time to do a fly-by via a hot air balloon with a similar anti-toxics sign .

The climbing part of it went fine, and the climbers put a huge banner on the New York State Capitol in Albany, NY, which made the national papers and was a great success. But, the part I was involved in, the hot air balloon part, was a mess–damn things aren’t very controllable in direction, and in the capitol action, when we were supposed to be flying over the capitol, we instead went the other way entirely, never making it anywhere near, and were stuck over the Hudson River for a long, long ride, till we finally crashed into a corn field, tearing a huge trench in the corn, and pissing off the farmer, though luckily for us he turned out to be a GP fan.

We had several of these wrong way balloon rides across upstate NY, one in which, while going up, my arm got jerked  in the lurching basket, I completely missed with the burner (you have to aim a long blue flame from basically a flame-thrower up into the hole in the bottom of the balloon) , and quickly burned out three panels from the ballon.

The GP pilot in charge, named Flip, said, “No, problem, happens all the time.”  So we kept going up, again the wrong way.

On another wrong way trip, we crash landed right on an Air Force base, forget which one now, but it’s one of the major ones up there.  Right on the runway.

To say they sounded royally pissed off on the icom aviation radio would be an understatement.

Most likely, to teach us a lesson, they launched 4 F-111 fighters

(these things: http://www.aerospaceweb.org/ai…

just right a few feet over our heads, as we were standing on the runway, and trying to control yards and yards and yards of unruly balloon, and pack the whole mess up in the wind.

The noise was so bad it took a minute before we could hear anything at all. When we finally could hear a little, Flip turned to me a said:

“I think they’re trying to give me penis envy.”

And, that always struck me as what the US is essentially doing, every day, in almost every part of the globe–shaking it’s penis, “projecting power”.

Here’s a partial list:

Everybody’s Stoned

Pres. Obama, tell me again, what are we fighting for?

Sometimes, people read what they want to read…

As president, I would pursue a new strategy, and begin by providing at least two additional combat brigades to support our effort in Afghanistan.

Taken together, these additional American and international troops will allow us to accelerate handing over responsibility to Afghan forces, and allow us to begin the transfer of our forces out of Afghanistan in July of 2011. Just as we have done in Iraq, we will execute this transition responsibly, taking into account conditions on the ground.

But under Republican questioning, Mr. Gates acknowledged that the surge troops could remain in Afghanistan longer if the American military and its NATO and Afghan allies failed to reverse the Taliban’s recent gains.

“It is our plan to begin this transition process in July of 2011,” Mr. Gates told the Senate Armed Services Committee. “But if circumstances dictate in December, I think the president always has the freedom to adjust his decisions.”

Why Obama’s “troop surge” will succeed — and fail

Yes, this new “troop surge” will succeed.  Yes, it will also fail.

The first thing you have to do is realize what the escalation of troops in Afghanistan is meant to accomplish.

As Rachel Maddow is, as I type, explaining, the entire goal of the surge is to provide enough cover for President Karzai’s government that, within 18 months, we can leave and his government is no longer threatened.

Obama: War President?!

Last night after the Presidents speech at West Point, and since, everyone is attempting to break it down, praise it, or totally attack the policy of another escalation of troops into an already long running occupation of the country of Afghanistan. This occupation stopped being anything about the attacks on this country on Sept 11, 2001 as soon as the first drumbeat towards invasion and then long occupation of an innocent country and people Iraq. Afghanistan stagnated into an occupation and insurgent war of continuing death and destruction to all involved but especially to the greater innocent population of Afghanistan now into it’s ninth year!

Test Votes Mean Nothing to Afghanis and Americans

One hopes that President Obama will strongly and clearly frame our mission in Afghanistan tonight, including the reason for our continued presence in a country that has known wave after wave of outside invaders fighting to advance their own ends.  We are but the latest army to set up shop and increase troop presence in pursuit of an elusive and often invisible enemy force.  The ultimate result is cloudy at this juncture, as was the previous President’s troop surge in Iraq when it was proposed.  I would hasten to call the latter decision an unequivocal success, but it did largely and surprisingly contain a low-grade Civil War.  It is with this fact in mind that many will choke down the prospect of another round of foreign entanglement, troop deployment, and media saturation coverage of major military skirmishes.

One could, I suppose, reach for an obscure citation describing a similar conflict to which the United States committed troops.  In this situation, however, there are no easy parallels and no conventional warfare nor wisdom to cite.  The Soviet Union’s disastrous nine years in the country might be the best possible comparison under the circumstances, but the peculiarities of that conflict leave it more akin to Vietnam to our current endeavor.  The Soviet War in Afghanistan was an attempt to bolster the existing Communist party from collapsing against the Mujahideen.  We, of course, allocated weaponry and financial support to the Islamic insurgents as a means of undermining the Soviets.

What has been forgotten in this day is that for nearly fifteen years, the Communist government ruled effectively and made great strides in developing a civilization rather than a backwards state beholden to constant conflict.  With the collapse of the USSR in 1991 came the decline of the Communist state and the rise of the Taliban, which single-handedly destroyed years of reform and plunged the country back into the Dark Ages.  The country deserves lasting stability if it is ever to move forward in time but until it ceases to be a designated battleground, it never will.

Nationwide protests this week against Afghanistan escalation (UPDATE)

It’s about time for a substantial anti-war movement to start in this country – and with Obama probably announcing an escalation of 34,000 troops to Afghanistan (in addition to the 20,000 he already sent), there is no better time than now.  A leading anti-war organization, World Can’t Wait, is holding protests around the nation.

Throughout next week, there will be protests in (this list will probably include more cities by the time the protests start – and you can always organize a protest yourself!):

Unemployed

PhotobucketIt has been declared that health care must be deficit neutral; and Social Security, Medicare, and other entitlements must be cut or they will destroy the country.   Yet, somehow, there is always ample money for bank bailouts, wars, and tax cuts.

So as Washington pisses away trillions of our dollars, millions of Americans are experiencing a financial crisis unprecedented by anything since the Great Depression.   And just like Katrina, they are being left to fend for themselves.

Protest the Troop Buildup on an Intersection Near Your Home

I just got in from protesting the war during rush hour. I live by a busy intersection, so I can just walk out and get a fairly good audience with the people driving to work. I stood on the sidewalk right next to the road from 7:30 to 9:00 with a big sign that had a peace sign on one side and “The war is not worth it” on the other. I plan to do it again at quitting time today. And then I am going to do the morning and afternoon rush hours ever day until Obama makes his announcement next week. We the citizens can help set the frame for Obama’s announcement. We should demonstrate resistance before he has even said anything, so the backlash will be even greater when he tells us he’s sending more troops.

So I hope others will join me and make up a sign, very legible from a distance, and protest where they live. You don’t need a big group to protest. A single sign can remind people of the war. All you need is a big audience. High-traffic intersections are excellent. So please, for the Iraqis and Afghans, make a sign and protest. If you wait around for the big organized protests, you will have waited too long. This is something you have to do on your own. Protesting with a small group of friends is fun too.

And if you’re already doing it, keep up the good work!
