Will try to do better. My outrage-ometer has been busted these past nine months…but you are right.
We must become the change we want to see. We must yell louder. And I am more guilty than most…lately I can’t even seem to summon up the ambition to write fucking Arlen Specter who is now in my party (sob).
…S ing…T…F…U…, loudly for several years now. The people where I live have decided I’m nuts. My dentist almost refused to schedule me again. Most people I run into want me to Shut The Fuck Up, and they just talk over me so they don’t have to hear me.
The last one told me he didn’t need to listen to me because he only listened to Jesus!

several years ago my spouse stood up, i stood up. we yelled. we’re still recovering from the financial disaster that was the result. we gave up/lost our dream jobs for that standing up. sad, but ultimately worth it. no regrets. this round i’m going to play a bit differently. we still stand up, individual-to-individual, but not in the public realm as before.
there were years where the days and hours and every ounce of energy and intellect were devoted to on-line and on-the-ground standing up. everything served that caused. everything. two people, one a physicist and the other an ex-waitress poet, gave up everything for their crazy hippie ideals. everything. all our security, all our money, both of our jobs and health insurance for over a year. it took over a year to find jobs, in new fields, that afforded a living wage. we’re still struggling.
i’m damn proud of our actions. we lost the respect of all of our family members, but wow… my spouse. he stood up and was exactly the man i thought he was and more. and i didn’t shy away either, and am stronger for the experience.
so i’m doing things differently this time, in part, because of that experience.
so, you know, there isn’t anyone on earth who is going to tell me how to fight these battles. i’m deep in the trenches of rural red (well, that’s not exactly true, i’m now in a city, yeah!) conservative thought and action. one size does not fit all, and either/or distinctions don’t work here.
And now that you mention it, let me tell you about a couple of things that will happen on GOS this weekend:
There will be a noweasels-inspired Feeding American blogathon — Patriot Daily and I will be writing in it. Please drop in and give us a shout. Even if you can’t donate. And know that your volunteer time at a Feeding America food bank is worth $17 per hour (at the 2008 rate).

Not just about electoral politics any more but learning to be active citizens — which means letting our reps know all the time what we want and understanding that kind of pressure actually works.
For all the bullshit about how bloggers have no impact, Graham’s comment, to me, shows otherwise. We are obnoxious and scary to folks like him and that’s all to the good. We’re not all of the answer, but we certainly have a role in our culture when it comes to helping to promote change.
And here I thought that 11 dementedal cheese was what was supposed to be going to change the world.
