Who doesn’t like kittens, bunnies, and little baby seals?
Me!
So you already know I don’t much like Figure Skating. Richard does though and tonight we have one of the two hardest and most technical disciplines- Pairs (the other is Ice Dancing).
The Chinese are the overwhelming favorites, people won’t shut up about them, and of course since it’s Figure Skating the Judging is a joke. About as credible as a Sunday Morning pundit and just as focused on celebrity and buzz and asskissing sychophancy.
The big difference is at least if they crash and burn Figure Skating Judges have the shame to deduct a tenth or two.
So I think it’s all as real a sport as professional wrestling.
Tonight is the Short Program that at least has the virtue of being short, though I’m certainly not going to guarentee to keep even one eye open after spending 6 and a half hours starting at 4:30 am drumming my fingers watching repeats of the pre-race show waiting for America’s Cup to start (we crushed Alinghi like a bug as I predicted).
Among the other offerings attempting to entertain me (starting at 7 pm on NBC main) are Freestyle Skiing Men’s Mogul, the last run of Men’s Single Luge (flaming twisted metal from the ladies tees), and Speed Skating (Women’s 3000m I think. Did I mention how useless the website is?).
Those are all on tape delay because they’re actually happening right now (6 pm).
Prison documentaries are far more important than anything happening in Vancouver so MSNBC is not carrying even a repeat of the Finland v. Russia Women’s Hockey that at least CNBC will put aside their paid programming and beat sweetening business biographies grudgingly aside for at 7:30 pm.
At the end of the evening nothing original, only a recap and anthem trivia medal ceremonies which will last but a merciful half hour before all the prancing sequined costumes we’ve seen before starts again.
If they have local news at 11:30 and don’t arbitrarily go off schedule again I’d like to recommend The Venture Brothers. It’s not the best episode, but they’re all good.

Feel free, I sure do.
The America’s Cup is handed over to the Golden Gate Yacht Club and its BMW ORACLE Racing team.
Barcelona lost 2-1; Inter looked terrible in a 0-0 tie.
I can’t watch the Old Limbics with any enthusiasm: hate snow, ice, high places, sliding, hype, NBC. Yuck. But I did find a fantastic NGO that is working on the Tigers and gives 100% of donations to projects and not to administrative costs. Maybe I will put something up about this tomorrow. Right now: panthera.org. I just gave them some $$. Makes the past few days seem a little better. Not a lot. But a little is good. Maybe some folks here can give them some $$ too.
…to my Greenroots diary on killer whales, so I suppose watching figure skating would be just as productive.

Evidently no one was watching the wrecks at Daytona.

with 3 sliders to go.
What a waste of good counter programming. All the people who would like this are watchin the trophy ceremony at Daytona.

One period to go.
Well so far I’m sober. The first US pairs skaters, nicely done. Good program, few flaws and the judges liked them. The Chinese couple are most likely unbeatable, unless they really flub it.
in second place, for now. Hometown favorites. Still sober.;-)
The lead in Men’s Moguls is a Canadian but skis for, heh, Australia.
for the US. Not the best run, certainly not medal contention.

Nothing left but Figure Skating, Blog programmed through tomorrow, Page fixed.
I might nap.
not enough action. Blah
Weather conditions have improved
thanks to the Russian pair. It was vodka Svedka
rather slow, not impressive. She is very good but he lacks in strength and artistry. Interesting costumes and music, new age
She is Japanese and gave up her Japanese citizenship to skate for Russia
Very graceful, artistic and well executed. Not as good as the Chinese pair. A few glitches but may give China a run in the long program.
I’m still sober. However I think the singles will be a problem
Hmmm holding on the game, not sure I can type and do shots. Otherwise the program is very interesting but a little “heavy”on the music. Not the most graceful or artistic.
Scored way to high. imo But it’s the “home team”
Beautiful program. very artistic, well executed, Graceful yet athletic. Excellent
Aggressive, not as graceful. A little raw and “sloppy” in the executions of their moves. Program doesn’t match the music. Music faster than they are. Don’t expect the Chinese to sweeo this medal event
2 time world champions skating to “Send in the Clowns”. Not wild about the costumes but to each his own.
Very nice, artistic and well executed. Commentators said they were slow but the program matched the music which counts, in my book. The elements were well done with good form and grace.
Judges put them in 2nd place behind the Chinese and the Russians 3rd. Well done
I still 2 and a half shots behind in the “Skating Game” which I’ll save for a later date. Happy Valentine’s Day to those who celebrate.
ek, you will be on your own Tuesday night. I have a party to attend at the French Consulate. WOO HOO!
