Jimmy Kimmel Live:

Trump is Almost Gone

The Late, Late Show with James Corden:

Trump Is Giving Rudy the Ol’ Stiff!

James Corden kicks off the show excited to share he’s going somewhat off the grid with a new, old cell phone (no email, web, keyboard) — and the gang takes bets on how long he will last with it. And James dives into the headlines, including reports that an isolated and angry President Donald Trump is cutting lawyer Rudy Giuliani out of the picture, Donld Trump Jr. and girlfriend Kimberly Guilfoyle moving to Florida and Dodger Stadium becoming a massive COVID-19 vaccination site.

Paul Krugman: Four Rules That Should Guide Bidenomics

Basically, damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead.

Here we go again. For the second time in 12 years a newly elected Democratic president is inheriting an economy in deep distress. And while it’s hard to focus on such things after last week’s Trumpist putsch, a lot depends on whether Joe Biden’s plan to deal with our economic woes is effective.

The narrow Democratic margin in Congress means that the most ambitious progressive goals will have to be put on hold. But the rescue package Biden unveiled Thursday already indicates he won’t exhibit the excessive caution that inhibited President Barack Obama’s response to economic crisis.

Still, in case anyone on the Biden team is feeling cautious, let me offer four rules, based on hard experience, that should encourage them to be bold in dealing with the mess we’re in.

Eugene Robinson: The Republicans are out of time to repudiate Trump’s election lies

If they don’t reaffirm the integrity of the election, the country may never recover.

President Trump is impeached yet again, disgraced yet again, soon to slink away in shame. But he leaves a poison trail behind him as he departs, an insidious Big Lie about “voter fraud” that gravely threatens our democracy. The Republican Party he leads is out of time to repudiate that lie. If its members fail to act now, they may never extricate themselves, or their country, from it. [..]

The biggest problem facing the nation now is not what to do with Trump, who will soon become yesterday’s news. The crisis is that more than 70 percent of Republican voters believe — falsely — that there was some kind of widespread fraud in the election. The essence of democracy is accepting both victory and loss as legitimate outcomes.

A GOP that internalizes and retains Trump’s conspiratorial worldview is not a political party. It is a dangerous cult. Elected officials who have cynically — or cravenly — gone along with that cult’s lies will not find it easy to reverse course.

Much more important than whether Trump is convicted in his coming trial is whether Republicans level with their constituents and tell them that Trump is lying.

If Republicans won’t — or can’t — tell the truth about the November election, they are no longer participants in our democracy. They are its enemies.

Amanda Marcotte: Republicans threaten violence if Trump faces repercussions — but it was impunity that moved his mob

Trump and his mob believe they’ll never pay the piper

There is no way to defend Donald Trump’s behavior last week, when, after pouring gasoline for months, he lit a match and set the insurrection fire. And, by and large, Republicans aren’t even trying. Instead, the Republican arguments against impeaching the president for a second time largely cite “concerns” — or what might be better described as threats — that any effort to hold Trump accountable for his behavior may anger an already angry mob, leading to more violence. [..]

Of course, Trump lost the Nov. 3 election to Joe Biden by 74 electoral votes, the exact number he won by in 2016. Yet his team continues to amplify the foundational lie that lead to last week’s violent desecration of the U.S. Capitol. In addition, multiple Republicans have spent the days since whining about Trump being “canceled,” callously acting as if the loss of his Twitter account is the real crime while ignoring the ones he incited, like beating a cop to death with a fire extinguisher during a treacherous riot.

The flaws in this let-the-terrorists win argument should be immediately evident.

For one thing, Trump supporters already violently tried to overthrow the government — not because Trump was being impeached, but because they reject the results of a democratic election and believe Trump should be illegally installed as an authoritarian leader.

Karen Tumulty: Trump’s stench will cling to Republicans long after he’s gone

The 45th president leaves Republicans at a hinge point on his way out the door.

Donald John Trump now bears the distinction of being the only president in U.S. history to be impeached twice.

Unlike the first time, this was a bipartisan congressional rebuke. Ten Republicans — including Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.), who ranks third in the GOP House leadership — joined 222 Democrats in voting to impeach.

But Trump is unlikely to pay any price beyond political humiliation. Although Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) let it be known, through a tactical leak to the New York Times, that he thinks Trump’s impeachment was warranted, McConnell does not plan to reconvene the upper chamber to conduct a trial in the week before Trump’s term expires.

The constitutional grounds for holding an unprecedented trial after Trump leaves office are questionable, as former federal appeals court judge J. Michael Luttig argued in a Post op-ed this week.

The wisdom of doing so is even more questionable. Such a politically fraught exercise could undermine Joe Biden’s ability to successfully launch his presidency amid a convergence of challenges: the covid-19 pandemic, a ravaged economy, a racial reckoning and frayed U.S. relationships with international allies.

Even more than it was 13 months ago, the case for removing Trump from office was utterly clear.

This time, lawmakers were not asked to adjudicate conflicting accounts of a private phone call with a foreign leader. The evidence here was what they had seen and heard with their own eyes and ears just a week earlier.

Michelle Goldberg: Trump’s Inevitable End

Has the reckoning come too late?

The House Judiciary Committee’s impeachment report quotes, at length, the speech that Donald Trump gave to his devotees on Jan. 6 before many of them stormed the Capitol, baying for execution. [..]

Trump now becomes the first president in American history to be impeached twice. Half of all presidential impeachments since the Republic began have been impeachments of Trump. This latest impeachment is different than the first, and not just because it was bipartisan. It culminates a week in which Trump has finally faced the broad social pariahdom he’s always deserved.

When a mob incited by the president ransacked the Capitol, killing one policeman and pummeling others, it also tore down a veil. Suddenly, all but the most fanatical partisans admitted that Trump was exactly who his fiercest critics have always said he was.

The volcano Kīlauea in Hawaii on the Big Island (Hawaii) is one of the world’s most active volcanoes. It erupted nearly continuously from 1983 to 2018. Then on December 20, 2020, a new eruption broke out in Halemaʻumaʻu, with the lava boiling off a water lake that had been growing for more than a year and replacing it with a lava lake.

In late July 2019, a water lake appeared on the bottom of Halemaʻumaʻu for the first time in over 200 years, as water from the rebounding water table began entering the crater. Afterward, the crater lake gradually grew in size. On December 1, 2020, the lake was approximately 49 metres (161 ft) deep. Within a month, the water lake would be replaced by a lava lake during a new eruption.

On December 20, 2020, at 9:30 PM local time, an eruption broke out within Halemaʻumaʻu at Kīlauea’s summit caldera. The US Geological Survey’s Hawaiian Volcano Observatory reported that three vents were feeding lava into the bottom of Halemaʻumaʻu Crater, boiling off the water lake that had been growing since summer 2019 and replacing it with a lava lake. According to the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, the eruption created a plume that reached 30,000 feet in elevation. The eruption was preceded by earthquake swarms centered at Kīlauea Caldera on November 30, 2020 and December 2, 2020, the second of which was interpreted as a small intrusion of magma. By the following morning, emergency officials reported that the eruption had stabilized and that two of the three vents remained active and continued to fill the floor of Halemaʻumaʻu with lava.] By 7:30 a.m. on December 25, 2020, the lava lake had filled in 176 metres (577 ft) of the crater, and the level of the lake was continuing to rise. On January 8, 2021, the depth of the lava lake had increased to 636 feet (194 m).

That brings us to another volcano, only this one is hidden under Yellowstone National Park, the Yellowstone Caldera, probably the most dangerous geological features on Earth. It last erupted approximately 640,000 years ago. The History Channel takes a look on how it was formed and its potential should it ever erupt.

Late Night Today

We are still in the process of examining the aftermath of last week’s terrorist attack on the Capitol by a riotous mob of White supremacists, some of whom have turned out to be real snowflakes. Another may have committed suicide in his home after having been arrested in DC last week.

Fortunately, there are the late night hosts to give us a good chuckle in the midst of this crisis.

The Late Show with Steven Colbert opened with a parody of the farcical Republican calls for unity.

Lex Luthor Joins Republicans In Calling For Unity

Moments after ordering Mr. Freeze to freeze the Capital, Lex Luthor thought it was indeed a time for the nation to come together.

In Stephen’s openng monologue, he’s still angry about last week’s riot as are most of us.

The Terrorists Who Attacked Congress At The President’s Direction Came Prepared To Kill

Stephen didn’t get a lot of sleep last weekend, as horrific scenes from last week’s violent insurrection at the U.S. Capitol played over and again in his head. It now appears clear that the armed mob, who were organized and cheered on by the president and his GOP backers in the House and Senate, came to the nation’s capital prepared to commit acts of violence against members of Congress and Vice President Mike Pence.

Host of the Daily Show Trevor Noah compared the Squatter to presidents of African countries.

Donald Trump – America’s African President

Donald Trump may not seem like commander-in-chief material to Americans, but in certain African countries, he fits the bill.

Late Night with Seth Meyers takes a Closer Look at impeaching Trump for insurrection.

House Democrats Move to Impeach Trump for Insurrection: A Closer Look

Seth takes a closer look at the Republicans who incited the violent insurrection at the Capitol telling everyone it’s “time to move on” after House Democrats unveiled a text of impeachment calling for the removal of President Trump through the 25th Amendment.

Jimmy Kimmel Live looks at the Squatter, getting banned from Twitter, making history by being impeached twice, his relationship with his VP, Melania’s photo shoot during the riots and other hot, and not so hot, topics.

Trump Booted from Twitter & Maybe the Presidency

Trump is set to make history as the first U.S. President to get impeached twice, his relationship with VP Mike Pence is said to be on the rocks, Melania was reportedly doing a photoshoot during the attacks at the Capitol, we look back at Hillary Clinton’s warning during the 2016 election, the FBI made a statement that MAGA rioters may try to storm capitols in all 50 states, Trump got the boot from Twitter, Facebook, Instagram & Snapchat, the PGA has chosen not to hold their championship at his golf course in New Jersey, and after a Harvard research assistant noticed a correlation between angry reviews on the Yankee Candle website and COVID, Jimmy got in touch with their Vice President of Fragrance (Andy Daly) to see what’s been going on.

Last, we join James Corden in his garage for The Late, Late Show and the Squatter’s final countdown.

Welcome to the Trump Final Countdown

James Corden kicks off the show recapping the weekend with Reggie Watts, and shares that he’s up against a rogue fly buzzing around in his garage. And James looks at the headlines, including Congress considering its options after President Donald Trump incited a mob that stormed the U.S. Capitol. And Trump is losing allies quickly, including his beloved game of golf.

Paul Krugman: This Putsch Was Decades in the Making

G.O.P. cynics have been coddling crazies for a long time.

One striking aspect of the Capitol Hill putsch was that none of the rioters’ grievances had any basis in reality.

No, the election wasn’t stolen — there is no evidence of significant electoral fraud. No, Democrats aren’t part of a satanic pedophile conspiracy. No, they aren’t radical Marxists — even the party’s progressive wing would be considered only moderately left of center in any other Western democracy.

So all the rage is based on lies. But what’s almost as striking as the fantasies of the rioters is how few leading Republicans have been willing, despite the violence and desecration, to tell the MAGA mob that their conspiracy theories are false.[..]

This coddling of the crazies was, at first, almost entirely cynical. When the G.O.P. began moving right in the 1970s its true agenda was mainly economic — what its leaders wanted, above all, were business deregulation and tax cuts for the rich. But the party needed more than plutocracy to win elections, so it began courting working-class whites with what amounted to thinly disguised racist appeals.

Not incidentally, white supremacy has always been sustained in large part through voter suppression. So it shouldn’t be surprising to see right-wingers howling about a rigged election — after all, rigging elections is what their side is accustomed to doing. And it’s not clear to what extent they actually believe that this election was rigged, as opposed to being enraged that this time the usual vote-rigging didn’t work.

Joseph Stiglitz: s Donald Trump an aberration or a symptom of a deeper US malady?

The underlying causes of Trump’s rise to power must be addressed, from taming social media to tackling inequality

The assault on the US Capitol by Donald Trump’s supporters, incited by the president himself, was the predictable outcome of his four-year-long assault on democratic institutions, aided and abetted by so many in the Republican party. And no one can say that Trump had not warned us: he was not committed to a peaceful transition of power.

Many who benefited as he slashed taxes for corporations and the rich, rolled back environmental regulations and appointed business-friendly judges knew they were making a pact with the devil. Either they believed they could control the extremist forces he unleashed, or they didn’t care.

Where does America go from here? Is Trump an aberration, or a symptom of a deeper national malady? Can the US be trusted? In four years, will the forces that gave rise to Trump, and the party that overwhelmingly supported him, triumph again? What can be done to prevent that outcome?

Robert Reich: Trump attempted a coup: he must be removed while those who aided him pay

A swift impeachment is imperative but from Rudy Giuliani and Don Jr to Fox News and Twitter, the president did not act alone

Call me old-fashioned, but when the president of the United States encourages armed insurgents to breach the Capitol and threaten the physical safety of Congress, in order to remain in power, I call it an attempted coup.

The rampage on Wednesday left five dead, including a Capitol police officer who was injured when he tangled with the pro-Trump mob. We’re fortunate the carnage wasn’t greater.

That the attempted coup failed shouldn’t blind us to its significance or the stain it has left on America. Nor to the importance of holding those responsible fully accountable.

Trump’s culpability is beyond dispute.

“There’s no question the president formed the mob, the president incited the mob, the president addressed the mob. He lit the flame,” said Elizabeth Cheney, the No3 House Republican.

Trump should be impeached, convicted and removed from office – immediately. [..]

He should then be arrested and tried for inciting violence and sedition – along with Donald Trump Jr and Rudy “trial-by-combat” Giuliani.

Those who attacked the Capitol should also be prosecuted. They have no first amendment right to try to overthrow the US government.

Trump’s accomplices on Capitol Hill, most notably the Texas senator Ted Cruz and Missouri senator Josh Hawley, should be forced to resign.

Amanda Marcotte: Trump didn’t suffer from “paralysis”: He failed to stop the Capitol siege because he loved the show

Trump acted willfully by inciting and supporting an insurrection — so why are some journalists afraid to admit it?

After four years of nonstop abuse from Donald Trump, it should be beyond a shadow of a doubt that, while Trump is indeed an ignoramus, his ugly behavior is largely motivated by malice, not stupidity. Yet, as we’ve seen through the years of Trump’s presidency, mainstream media outlets have continued to cast his actions as the choices of a man too numpty-headed to know right from wrong, instead of the behavior of a shameless villain who does vicious and cruel things out of a deeply felt sadism. Since Trump sent an unruly mob to ransack the Capitol, however, mainstream journalists have woken up, describing Trump’s actions accurately as incitement, instead of using euphemisms or casting around for an “innocent” explanation.

They are now signs of slippage back to old habits.

On Monday night, the Washington Post published a report detailing Trump’s refusal to do anything to discourage the insurrectionist mob after they penetrated the Capitol. The headline: “Six hours of paralysis: Inside Trump’s failure to act after a mob stormed the Capitol.”

This headline is wildly misleading. Trump did not suffer from “paralysis,” nor was his inaction due to “failure.” Both words imply that there was a desire to act, but that Trump was somehow incapable. The reality: Trump refused to act. [..]

And yet, the latest Washington Post story, while bristling with examples of how Trump acts out of malice and not ignorance, keeps framing his actions in a more innocent light, describing Trump as “a president paralyzed” and “more passive viewer than resolute leader”.

This is flatly false. Trump was not being passive at all. He actively incited the mob and he willfully refused to do anything to call them off. He did this deliberately, having exhausted every other avenue he pursued to steal the election. These were not the actions of a man too stupid to act. These were the actions of a man knowingly trying to overthrow a legal election.

Jamelle Bouie: Sure, Now Ted Cruz and Kevin McCarthy Want ‘Unity’

Where was that spirit when election results were being counted?

The Republican Party has devised its response to the push to impeach the president over his role in the attack on the Capitol last week, and it is so cynical as to shock the conscience. [..]

There are a handful of Senate Republicans, like Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania, who are open to impeachment. But much of the Republican response is exactly this kind of threat: If you hold President Trump accountable for his actions, then we won’t help you unify the country. [..]

Accountability is divisive. That’s the point. If there is a faction of the Republican Party that sees democracy itself as a threat to its power and influence, then it has to be cut off from the body politic. It needs to be divided from the rest of us, lest it threaten the integrity of the American republic more than it already has. Marginalizing that faction — casting Trump and Trumpism into the ash heap of history — will be divisive, but it is the only choice we have.

This does not mean we must cast out the 74 million Americans who voted for the president, but it does mean we must repudiate the lies, cruelty and cult of personality on which Trump built his movement. It means Republicans have to acknowledge the truth — that Joe Biden won in a free and fair election — and apologize to their voters and to the country for helping to stoke the madness that struck at the Capitol.

The alternative is a false unity that leaves the wound of last Wednesday to fester until the infection gets even worse than it already is.
