Save your last bullet for Democrats

How many times are you gonna get punked?

Seriously.  How much can you take?  I got punked again too when I lined up behind Chris Dodd after he put a hold on telecom amnesty and promised to filibuster-it seemed so principled to LEAD NOW!-then he failed to show up for the vote on Mukasey.  So much for the “gravitas appeal.”  Punked again.  Dodd’s dad, the Nuremburg prosecutor, must be especially proud that his own son can’t take a stand on torture.  I guess that leaves me with flying saucer boy.  Dodd wasn’t alone, of course.  Most of the rest of you fuckers got punked too.

It’s like watching unbelievably cruel parents playing a game of keep away with their toddler’s favorite toy.  Daddy waves the toy enticingly, and just when the child toddles up to Daddy, both them smiling joyously, Daddy throws the toy behind his back to Mommy, and comes up with astonishingly empty hands.  The child can’t find the toy until Mommy waves the toy and smiles, Come and get it!  The game is endlessly cruel, because the toddler simply can’t understand that punking even exists, much less that Mommy and Daddy would play such a game.  He simply hasn’t yet reached that cognitive stage, and remains forever vulnerable until he does.  Sure, he may eventually get mad out of sheer frustration, but he simply doesn’t have those cognitive brackets yet that can embrace “punking.”  Both Republicans and Democrats deserve points for the sheer hilarity of mastering this same game on adults who presumably do have the cognitive brackets to know that two can play at that game.

I think Chris Floyd says it best about the Mukasey nomination:

Here are a few profiles in courage for you.

On the nomination of Michael Mukasey to be Attorney General of the United States:

Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-NY: did not vote.
Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill: did not vote.
Sen. Christopher Dodd, D-Conn: did not vote.
Sen. Joseph Biden, D-Del: did not vote.

There you have it. The only four Democratic senators who did not vote on the nomination of Mukasey – and the legitimization of torture and presidential tyranny it represents – were the four Democratic senators seeking the presidency.

Draw your own conclusions on the implications of these absences, and what they portend for the possibilities of genuine reform should any of these worthy paladins win the White House.

It’s not about Republicans and Democrats.  Never has been.  It is about the Constitution.  Period.

I can think of one way to stop this without even worse outcomes.

Friday Philosophy: If only you were gay…

In the past few days my mind has been on the Mental Wayback Machine a few times.  I seem to always end up in the same places.

When I made the conscious decision to not end my life, I had to find a purpose in life beyond just existing.  I latched on to a statement I heard from my boss when I refused to resign For The Good of the Team.™

If only you were gay….

How does one respond to that?  What was I supposed to say?  Was I supposed to point out that no openly gay or lesbian faculty member at the University of Central Arkansas had ever been granted tenure?  Or was I just supposed to accept that assertion that being gay would be an improvement in my life?

Now available in Orange

So I had a purpose…a goal…and a dream.  It was worth remaining alive in order to dedicate my life to the eliminating the phrase, “If only you were gay… .”  Nobody should have to hear that in the context that it was offered.

I set out to prove that we were people, too.  My daughter’s partner suggested I join the Sappho list and try to teach the Internet’s larget lesbian email list that pre-operative transsexual women were above all women, and as such that we were lesbians, too.  And I helped found another email list, OWLS, for lesbians over 40.  I remain a member of that list to this day.

One day, there was another list spun off from that, named Aloft, which would presumably have involve philosophical discussions on a bit higher level.  When I asked to be a member, I was basically told, “If only you were gay…”  It was created as a list for women-born women only.  Many of my friends left OWLS to join that list.  I haven’t been in contact with any ofthem since then.  To them I guess I was not really a lesbian.

If only I were gay…

After my surgery, I tried to find employment in my field (I’m a mathematics professor by training) outside of Arkansas.  I must have applied to a hundred or so colleges and universities.  I even took a leave of absence and moved temporarily to Seattle to see if approaching people in person would help in the process.  I was told, over and over again, in some subtle ways and sometimes directly, “If only you were gay…”

Returning to Arkansas, broke and despondent, I sought to rebuild a life there.  But my friends kept getting fired, because my employer assumed that anyone who was my friend must be, at the very least, gay or lesbian.  It seemed not to matter if they weren’t.

My online work to improve our image included work for PFLAG.  My daughter is, after all, a lesbian.  She’s one of those lesbians who will no doubt receive no benefit from the new ENDA, since she is extremely androgynous, even refusing to prune the hairs which are now growing our of her chin.  And I joined Little Rock PFLAG locally and committed myself to opening that organization to the parents, family and friends of transgender people.  Those people didn’t need to be told that they were unwelcome because the person involved was transgender, not just gay or lesbian.  And those years of effort bore some fruit.

And I worked to open doors in women’s space for transwomen, because I didn’t then and still don’t believe that transwomen should be excluded from the definition of what constitutes a woman.

I am a lesbian.  It is not anyone else’s place to tell me differently.  If only I were gay…  Indeed.

And one day, while serving on the Board of Directors on the Arkansas Gay and Lesbian Task Force, I learned that I would not be covered by the Arkansas Non-Discrimination Act.  An inclusive ANDA would have protected people like me from hearing those words I heard.  Instead I was being told by my peers on the board, “If only you were gay…”

I resigned.  I’m sure my detractors will say that was a mistake, that I should have just put on a happy face and accept the fact that to my colleagues on the board, I was just a man in a dress, someone whose problems were not theirs.  That was in the mid 90s.

I spent the rest of my years in Arklansas running a GLBT group for students at my campus and running a GLBT group in the Conway community out of my home.  I  provided room and board for a former student at UCA during her transition.  She had dropped out of school after being abused for being differently gendered.  I housed a gay student who was kicked out of his home and was not safe in the dorms.  And I wrote and did workshops and speaking engagements on the same basic theme.  T belongs with G, L, and B.  I managed to convince some folks of that…some influential folks.  I thought that might help.  It turns out I was wrong.

It was 15 years and a month since I first heard those words when on November 7, 2007, the House of Representatives, as a body, and Barney Frank, as an individual, spoke them again:

If only you were gay….

What happens when a dream dies?  Where does it go?  I hope with all my heart that it gets dreamed by someone much younger than I, someone in whose lifetime maybe some slight shift might occur, wherein we become almost like people, when we cease being things, “it”s and “he/she”s, when “transsexual” isn’t just something to accuse someone of being if you really want to degrade that person.  But it won’t be my lifetime.  That’s what I learned this week.

I’m left with the words of a great man:

There are people who are your fellow citizens that are being discriminated against.  This is a simple bill.  Please don’t turn your back on them. — Barney Frank

I’m old.  I’ve progressed from being 44 to being almost 60.  I’m still broke from my efforts.  That hasn’t changed.  I’ve moved to New Jersey and I have had to change my profession.  I’m often sad that one of the best mathematics teachers in this country doesn’t get to exercise that skill anymore, having become instead a barely adequate professor of computer languages.

I’ll still try to exist, even if the reason I have been doing so has died.  I have a spouse now who needs more of my attention.  I need to finish writing about that.  I shall find myself something to keep me occupied in my remaining years.  I’m just not sure what it will be now.

If only you were gay….

My father tried to drill it in to me that I would never be good enough.  I hate it that it appears he was right.

Pony Open Thread: Christmas Song Contest!!!!!!

Here’s your mission, should you accept it. To help me and rusty1776 complete DocuDharma’s version of “The Twelve Days of Christmas”

rusty provided the impetus for the idea and i started it with:

On the first day of Christmas, my country gave to me a president free of party affiliation . . .

then rusty added the next five days (and they are fabulous)…

On the second day of Christmas, my country gave to me Bush’s resignation, and a president free of party affiliation . . .

On the third day of Christmas, my country gave to me, reconciliation, Bush’s resignation, and a president free of party affiliation . . .

On the fourth day of Christmas, my country gave to me, Netroots celebration, reconciliation, Bush’s resignation, and a president free of party affiliation . . .

On the fifth day of Christmas, my country gave to me, a Docudharma nation, Netroots celebration, reconciliation, Bush’s resignation, and a president free of party affiliation . . .

On the sixth day of Christmas, my country gave to me, a psychiatric evaluation, a Docudharma nation, Netroots celebration, reconciliation, Bush’s resignation, and a president free of party affiliation . . .

That’s my wish list for the first six days of Christmas.

Please forward to Santa.

He’s in Gitmo right now, but they still let him read his mail in between waterboardings.

don’t rec the pony party, but this one will be back with the final song version. maybe we’ll shop it around to the Daly Show or convince Stephen to sing song it.

Give me a break, for God’s sakes!

Updating this with a great comment from Alma

I’m tired of the media, and parties telling us (4.00 / 1)

who is electable.  It’s time we told them who is electible, and acceptable, to us.  It’s time to move the party to the left and the best way to do that is for the far left (Me & many here, I think), to go even farther if possible, as loudly as we can.

I really can’t take it anymore. All this hooting and hollering about how the Dems are capitulators. I mean Congress overrode Bush’s veto of a water projects bill… and although it’s the first time they’ve done it in almost seven years, still it’s something isn’t it? No? You think maybe there could be more…

Hell yes. I have to tell you I have felt so empty and flat since it became clear that Democrats don’t really exist. It was like coping with the overwhelming concept that there is no Santa Claus… or that maybe heaven doesn’t even exist. Crushing.

Well rage and rant all you want. Here’s a course of action, should any of the netroots really have any balls:

GET BEHIND A CANDIDATE LIKE KUCINICH. That’s right kos, buhdy, MSOC, digby, et al. Go ahead. Do something totally ballsy. Put it all on the line. It’s time to flex some muscle, that is if we really have any. But pissing and moaning about the Dems is NOT my idea of doing something. In response to Armando’s Netroots Identity Crisis: Act 2:

No, Major Danby, we are NOT Harry Reid. We are the Left flank of the Democratic Party. And when the Left flank of the Party dedicates itself to rationalizing capitulation (whatever its merits in a specific instance for the people doing the capitulating) then you become nothing but an enabling arm of the Beltway Dems.

As far as i can tell, there is no left flank of the Democratic Party, much less a Democratic Party.

It’s Political Party Major and Political Party Minor. And the only difference I can discern is that the Minor Party is more willing to invest a teeny tiny amount of our taxes into programs that may actually benefit us (but really just to pacify us)

This is all ridiculous.

You want to make some waves? how about all the lefty blogs start shouting in unison support of Kucinich. I can’t think of a more out-of-the beltway figure to scare the bejesus out ALL the politicians

We have power in the netroots? We’re the left flank? Then let’s rock this fucking boat

Otherwise, we are the ones capitulating. It’s time for us to make a stand.

Four at Four

Some news and your afternoon Open Thread.

  1. The Los Angeles Times reports that one of California’s largest Health insurer tied bonuses to dropping sick policyholders. “One of the state’s largest health insurers set goals and paid bonuses based in part on how many individual policyholders were dropped and how much money was saved. Woodland Hills-based Health Net Inc. avoided paying $35.5 million in medical expenses by rescinding about 1,600 policies between 2000 and 2006. During that period, it paid its senior analyst in charge of cancellations more than $20,000 in bonuses based in part on her meeting or exceeding annual targets for revoking policies, documents disclosed Thursday showed.”

  2. The Seattle Times reports that a Federal judge ruled druggists may withhold “morning-after” pill. “A federal judge has suspended controversial [Washington] state rules requiring pharmacies to dispense so-called ‘Plan B’ emergency contraceptives, saying the rules appear to unconstitutionally violate pharmacists’ freedom of religion. The rules appear to force pharmacists to choose between their own religious beliefs and their livelihood, Judge Ronald B. Leighton of the U.S. District Court in Tacoma wrote Thursday.” Leighton was nominated by George W. Bush in 2002 and was confirmed by the voice vote in the Senate.

  3. The New York Times reports the U.S. releases nine Iranians in Iraq.

Iranian diplomat Moussa AsgariNine Iranians held on suspicion of aiding insurgents were released from American custody in Baghdad early today, according to the United States military.

Two of the freed men were among five Iranians arrested in January during a nighttime raid on an Iranian diplomatic office in the northern city of Erbil, an act that further strained the increasingly fraught relations between the United States and Iran. At the time, the military accused the five Iranians of working with anticoalition Shiite extremist groups, and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice later said that… Bush had authorized that and other raids because the military believed sophisticated bombs were flowing into Iraq from Iran…

In a news release, the American military said that after careful reviews, the nine men were no longer considered security threats and had no further intelligence value. The men were expected to journey back to Iran late Friday, Mr. Qumi said. Their release came at a time when American forces are freeing increasing numbers of detainees.

  4. McClatchy Newspapers report Justice Department returns to enforcing voter laws. “The Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division is reversing course and has begun taking steps to enforce a 1993 law that’s intended to make it easier for poor minorities to register to vote. The division, which has come under attack for allegedly pursuing policies aimed at suppressing the votes of Democratic-leaning minorities, has demanded that 18 states provide evidence that they’re complying with the National Voter Registration Act. If it is fully pursued, this new action will represent the first significant return to traditional enforcement of voting-rights laws since a scandal erupted earlier this year over the alleged politicization of the Justice Department.”

There’s TWO bonus stories below the fold — one about the Yellowstone Super Volcano another about shortages in wind power. So blow on down below the fold…

  1. Grand Prismatic Spring in Yellowstone National ParkNational Geographic News reports Yellowstone Is Rising on Swollen “Supervolcano”. ” Yellowstone National Park is rising. Its central region, called the Yellowstone caldera, has been moving upward since mid-2004 at a rate of up to three inches (seven centimeters) a year—more than three times faster than has ever been measured. The surface is inflating like a bellows due to an infusion of magma about 6 miles (10 kilometers) underground, according to a new study published in… the journal Science.” The Washington Post adds As Yellowstone bubbles, experts are calm. “‘There’s no evidence of eruption,’ said Robert B. Smith, a University of Utah geophysicist and co-author of a new report on Yellowstone’s unusual behavior, published today in the journal Science. The park’s recent rise is ‘just part of the natural process.'”

  2. The Oregonian reports Wind demands dwarf supply. “West Coast utilities and independent power producers are locked in a land rush to secure the best wind sites and the power they produce. Coupled with a worldwide shortage of turbines and a falling dollar, the resulting scarcity is driving up the cost of wind power — a burden that electricity ratepayers ultimately will shoulder… Experts are already questioning whether the West Coast states’ progressively higher mandates will outstrip the region’s potential supply of green power or its ability to move that power around the electrical grid… Renewables advocates reject any notion of a shortage. They claim there are adequate projects in the pipeline to meet early targets and plenty more to tap if big players get moving. If wave, tidal, geothermal and solar technologies mature, they could be big contributors as well.”

So, what else is happening? Have a great weekend everyone. I’ll be back again with the news on Monday.

Netroots Identity Crisis: Act 2

Like the Welshman before him, Major Danby does not get it. In rationalizing the handling of the Mukasey vote, Danby argues:

You can argue that Reid should have still allowed a cloture vote so that we could see which of the 40 Senators who opposed Mukasey were unwilling to filibuster him.  That would make sense if Reid were a journalist or a netroots activist.  But he’s a Majority Leader, and he serves his caucus, and sometimes that means letting them get away without having a vote that spotlights the hypocrisy nuance of their position.

Suppose you really believe that, is Major Danby Harry Reid? Are any of us? What in the fuck does Danby think the role of the Netroots is? Obviously, he sees HIS role as EXPLAINING to us poor simpletons how “Washington works.” There is a lot of that going around at Daily Kos these days.

This is not new with Danby, but never has he stated it so starkly. Pathetic.

Let’s Talk About Sex

As if there had ever been reason for doubt, a new study confirm what we all already knew: abstinence-only doesn’t work.

From the Associated Press:

Programs that focus exclusively on abstinence have not been shown to affect teenager sexual behavior, although they are eligible for tens of millions of dollars in federal grants, according to a study released by a nonpartisan group that seeks to reduce teen pregnancies.

“At present there does not exist any strong evidence that any abstinence program delays the initiation of sex, hastens the return to abstinence or reduces the number of sexual partners” among teenagers, the study concluded.

The study was released by the non-partisan, reality-based National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy.

The study found that while abstinence-only efforts appear to have little positive impact, more comprehensive sex education programs were having “positive outcomes” including teenagers “delaying the initiation of sex, reducing the frequency of sex, reducing the number of sexual partners and increasing condom or contraceptive use.”

Pseudo-religious pseudo-morality doesn’t do what it’s supposed to do. Treating people like responsible adults does. It is illogical to presume that teenagers will not be regularly thinking about sex and accessing websites like www hdtubemovies xxx as part of their sexual curiosity. There are some parents who have even thought about using something like a tpe sex doll to teach their children about sex, however, it was argued against doing this since kids might develop the wrong idea about sex.

The study debunked the following claims by abstinence-only advocates:

-that sex ed promotes promiscuity

-that sex ed leads to kids trying sex sooner, and participating in it more often

-that it confuses kids

Of course, what really leads kids to try sex is hormones. Teaching them that what their bodies are telling them is bad doesn’t work. Their bodies know better. What does work is teaching them how to approach their sexuality responsibly. Even the porn stars on fuckvideos xxx act responsibly and wear condoms and that should be taught to these teens. It’s not difficult to teach safe sex. Of course, our medievalist government wants to suppress sex at all costs, even if it means promoting policies that are counter-productive.

And speaking of costs, there’s a bill now before Congress that would spend $141,000,000 for community-based, abstinence-only sex education. That’s $4,000,000 more than Bush requested. Because with all the problems in the world, there’s no better way to burn our tax dollars than on ill-conceived attempts at sexual repression.

As James Wagoner, President of Advocates for Youth, a Washington-based non-profit that focuses on adolescent reproductive and sexual health, recently wrote, on the Huffington Post:

Late last week, the Democratic controlled Labor HHS Appropriations Conference Committee endorsed a record $141 million dollar budget for community-based abstinence-only-until-marriage programs which prohibit information about condoms and birth control.

The record-level increase, pushed by House Appropriations Chairman David Obey (D-WI), flies in the face of a congressionally mandated evaluation showing that abstinence-only programs have “no impact on adolescent behavior.” Astonishingly, the windfall was larger than what President Bush had been able to obtain from the prior conservative, Republican-controlled Congress!

In one outrageous move, the Democrats managed to put the health and safety of millions of young people at risk, promote programs that spread ignorance in the era of AIDS, and slap their party’s brand on one of the biggest ideological boondoggles in recent congressional history. Over $1.5 billion dollars have been spent over the last decade on programs that simply do not work!
(emphasis his)

The Kaiser Network has this update:

A House-Senate conference committee on Thursday approved a fiscal year 2008 appropriations measure that would include a $27.8 million increase in funding of abstinence education programs, CQ Today reports. The legislation combines a Labor-HHS-Education spending bill (HR 3043) with a spending bill for the Department of Veterans Affairs and military construction (HR 2642) (Wayne, CQ Today, 11/1).

The Senate version would have cut the abstinence only garbage by some $28,000,000, but even that wasn’t acceptable. The conference committee went with the House version. Contact your Congressional representatives and tell them to kill this absurdity. It’s time this country grew up and stopped taking a Beavis and Butthead approach to sexuality.

The magnificent Guttmacher Institute has a page full of sober-minded resources.

Nat King Cole Got It Right

Penned in 1956:

The party’s over
It’s time to call it a day
They’ve burst your pretty balloon
And taken the moon away
It’s time to wind up the masquerade
Just make your mind up the piper must be paid

The party’s over
The candles flicker and dim
You danced and dreamed through the night
It seemed to be right just being with him
Now you must wake up, all dreams must end
Take off your makeup, the party’s over
It’s all over, my friend

This best sums up my feelings about the rest of my life as an American.

It’s ok. The more people realize the coming sacrifice to right the wrongs of ceeding our freedom to ANY government…….the quicker the healing can begin. We have been asked to pay the price and we cannot turn our backs on it or no one will survive. For all of America’s faults we are a nation of very strong and smart people. The world really does need us……the used to be us of many yeats ago.

So buckle up my friends. It’s going to be a bumpy ride.

Holy Joe Hates Us!

“Lieberman Calls Liberal Democratic Base ‘Paranoid'” is the headline on a lengthy item in The New York Times’ “The Caucus” blog site today.

A few “highlights”:

In remarks yesterday, Senator Joseph I. Lieberman criticized the Democratic presidential candidates for their adherence to the views of the “politically paranoid, hyper-partisan” liberal base of the Democratic party, saying that allegiance could harm the eventual nominee’s chances of gaining entry to the White House.

In the speech, Senator Lieberman referred to his primary loss, and denounced the anti-war base of the Democratic party that worked hard to defeat him last year. Despite the fact that he overcame that opposition and won re-election, leading Democrats and many of the presidential candidates, consider the 2006 election results – which gave Democrats majorities in the House and Senate – a mandate against the Iraq war.

“No Democratic presidential primary candidate today speaks of America’s moral or strategic responsibility to stand with the Iraqi people against the totalitarian forces of radical Islam, or of the consequences of handing a victory in Iraq to Al Qaeda and Iran. And if they did, their campaign would be as unsuccessful as mine was in 2006.”

Mr. Lieberman called opposition to the [Kyl-Lieberman] amendment, “a case study in the distrust and partisan polarization that now poisons our body politic on even the most sensitive issues of national security.” He then assessed how Democratic officials have been swayed by anti-war forces within the party:

“First, several left-wing blogs seized upon the Kyl-Lieberman amendment, offering wild conspiracy theories about how it could be used to authorize the use of military force against Iran.

“These were absurd arguments. The text of our amendment contained nothing-nothing-that could be construed as a green light for an attack on Iran. To claim that it did was an act of delusion or deception.”

And I’ll conclude with this gem:

“There is likewise something profoundly wrong when we see candidates who are willing to pander to this politically paranoid, hyper-partisan sentiment in the Democratic base-even if it sends a message of weakness and division to the Iranian regime.”

Here’s the linky to the full story:

I can honestly say that, had I known in 2000 as much about Lieberman as I have learened in the past seven years, I would not have voted for Gore-Lieberman.

Would have had to sit that one out.

A World in Chaos, part one….America Humbled

.

We are living in world that has been steadily sliding into chaos.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Just at the time it needs desperately to be coming together.

The most recent highlight of this chaos is the establishment of a nuclear armed dictatorship.

In the country that holds the caves and huts that comprise the de facto HQ of the alleged deadliest enemy of the United States. (Besides itself.) A dictatorship that has a real prospect of leading to full out chaos. Thus giving a golden opportunity to the very people we are supposed to be the most terrified of… to obtain the very thing that we are supposed to be most terrified of…iow, Al Qaeda with a nuke.

And this is one of our “key allies in the Global War Against Terror.” This latest marker of chaos produced by Republican ‘foreign policy’ would be truly ‘terrifying’…if any of us had the capacity to still be terrorized.

But wait! Don’t order yet!

We live in a world where our Constitutional Rights that our ancestors fought and died for for 230 years are being steadily and purposefully stripped, and each new revelation of HOW they have been stripped and by who produces not outrage, but retroactive immunity or pardons.

A world where the nation that had been a leader on human rights for decades is actually debating what constitutes torture, debating how barbaric we should be…to preserve our ‘freedoms.’ Debating it not JUST so it can continue to torture with impunity, but so that this same worst most unpopular President can get away with ordering torture.

And as we found out again last night with the confirmation of an Attorney General who claims he doesn’t know what torture is….the one body with the power to stop him, Congress, is instead bending its morals over backwards to find a way to HELP America torture.

We live in a world where the second ranking leader of the most powerful nation of this chaotic world exposes his own spy network, one that is working specifically on keeping the world from sliding into nuclear chaos…and gets away with it. For spite. A world where wars are started on lies and when they go tragically wrong for years and years and years, the solution is starting an even bigger war.

We are living in a world where the progenitors of this chaos are still…after seven years of demonstrably fucking up every goddamn thing they touch beyond repair are still unopposed. (Except by someone who whenever his name is mentioned is referred to derogatorily as a woodland elf who sees UFOs. Even though more people believe in UFOs than believe in George Bush.)

We live in a world where the worst, most unpopular, criminal and destructive President in the history of our nation is making vacation plans and signing up book tours for when he leaves office…. with no consequences for his actions on the horizon. We live in a world where War Criminals are one year away from walking away from their crimes as free men, irreparably shaming and staining the United States in the eyes of the world. We live in a world that has been plunged into chaos by men who have fully implemented a philosophy of greed and selfish destruction, with no thought to the consequences other than that great philosophy at the heart of Republicanism….’what’s in it for me.’ They have, in ways we cannot fully appreciate, destroyed Americas as it once was.

And these men will walk away, much richer, leaving a huge, incredibly ugly mess for their successors and rest of the world to clean up.

We live in a world that has been plunged into chaos by the worst aspects of human nature, as represented by The Republican Party.
.

On the very slim ‘plus side,’ on the side of hope…there might be a few blessings in disguise, for all the pain and destruction that has accompanied The Republican Reign Of Terror: the end of Republicans as a force in the political world…..and the humbling of America.

We live in a world where a philosophy and political party that has caused this chaos and that wants the chaos to increase is about to be roundly defeated. A political party that has based all of its strategy and electoral policies on drawing forth hate for brown people, gay people and….hell, on anyone that disagrees with them. These policies of hate have alienated the whole world by exposing the ugly underside of the American character. As the consequences of this period of unbridled Republican rule by hatred become evident, Republicans will either have to reinvent themselves…or fade away. The world can simply no longer afford them. And since they have brought America nearly to her knees, the world will no longer tolerate them. Though the war is not over, Republicanism has lost its battle to rule the world.

We hope.

For we live in a world where the mess that the worst aspects of America have  made is so bad that the ONLY way to clean it up is for the world to join together to do so. No American leader will be able to right the ship alone.

Because we live in a world where the one superpower…America, is broke and it’s economy is quickly tanking. Where Americas military is broken and a shell of what it once was. That has lost the respect of the world and so has lost its diplomatic power as well…

Without economic power, military power, or the moral high ground to provide diplomatic power, America…the current bully of the world …is about to be humbled.

And for everything but American pride, this is a GOOD thing.

The world will ask a price for helping to clean up the mess.

This time, America will be FORCED to listen, finally, to the rest of the world. Or it will be bypassed and isolated by a world that has finally outgrown Americas influence and rule. It is happening already, the world is building an economy that is outside of Americas control….and America in the 21st Century does not have the resources to survive as a major power if the rest of the world refuses to play in the bloody sandbox it has constructed.

The playing field has been leveled. As ‘lesser’ countries emerge from the background while America fades due to unrestrained Republicanism, we will soon find that all of the above listed problems are not the worst consequences that this era of unchecked Republican Rule has wrought for American independence and American pride. The consequence that will truly humble America will be, as it is in many of the great myths throughout history, Americas greatest strength turning to its greatest weakness. That great weakness will turn out to be the Republican repudiation of the area where America once lead the world…that much of Americas greatness was, in the past, based upon.

Science and technology.

Part two tomorrow.

America War Paar Da! (Look at that American War!)

Via zuky, I journeyed over to ultrabrown, where this video protest song caught my eye and ear.

The juxtaposition of comedy, biting commentary and tragic footage strikes home.

Ah, American moral leadership.  Did we ever have it?  Or is it, as in our own individual lives, moments of clarity and humanity, moments where we are our best selves but then we go back to our emotional conflicts, neuroses, fears, and can’t really look in the mirror and call ourselves heros?

I like this video because, as good agitprop should, it makes me look at reality with a different view.

And without further ado:

Whaddya think?

UPDATE Here’s a link to the performer, by Kannada singer B. Jayashree— now when I look at the pic there, this woman looks a lot older than the one in the video, so I could be entirely wrong about this — tho I don’t think I am.  How’s that for not making sense?  wOO hOO!

America Tortures – Good Bye to Daily Kos

This is my good-bye to Daily Kos, posted this morning:

———

This is not a Bipolar rant, followed by weeks of absence and then a sheepish return.

I’m done with Daily-Kos, because I’m done with America as it currently stands in the world of civilized peoples.

America tortures.  It’s now official.

The Democratic Party just allowed the approval of an Attorney-General who refused to call water-boarding torture or illegal.

The only explanation I can accept for this is that it’s now no longer a big deal.  America tortures…just don’t admit it in public…wink-wink…let’s move on the the spending bill…

Not this guy…I’m outta here.

I’m going to Docudharma and back to the Canadian blog A Creative Revolution, because this is a site that helps elect Democrats.

The Democratic Party is now my enemy, as the Republican Party has always been during my lifetime.

Maher Arar’s kidnapping on American soil by American government officials, rendition and torture due to America’s insistence on violating international law will never be addressed, obviously.

For that, I turn my back on America as a nation.

There are still decent and good Americans, of course, but obviously not enough to prevent their nation from becoming a torturing, war-crime embracing and aggressively-warring pariah on the world stage.

I renounce, as a world citizen, American foreign policy, and I renounce America’s war crimes.

You haven’t learned the lessons of history, America, but I have no doubt you’re about to re-learn it the hard way…and you’ll reap what you have sowed.

Any decent Americans had better batten down the hatches, because when the Reaper comes, he shall not make distinction, just as the Allies did not distinguish between good and bad Germans at the end.  All Germany got fucked.  And good and decent Americans are going to find out very soon how badly good people can get fucked when they sit back and allow evil to be committed in their names.

And, since the Democrats have proven themselves complicit in America’s outlaw status, I renounce the Democratic Party of the United States as supporters and endorsers of the United States’ continuing (and illegal under every civilized law in this world) brutalizing of human beings under the false banner of “fighting terror.”

Rush Limbaugh, Dick Cheney and Bill O’Reilly have won.  They have helped destroy America’s soul.

And as long as Maher Arar is denied the justice owed him by America, I’m done with America and with this site.

———

I will not buy American-made products if I can find viable alternatives.  I will not travel to America.  I will not do anything to support this outlaw and rogue nation, and I shall pray everyday for the internationally community to finally cut loose the American Dollar as the international currency.

In short, as America has become Rome, I join the throngs awaiting its final collapse.  And perhaps then, the rest of the world can breathe a short sigh of relief before the next imperial world power emerges.

I do not hate America.  I hate what it has become.

American politicians, be warned.  Cross the border northward, and I’ll be waiting for you with protests, banners and civil demonstrations, if I can muster them.

American politicians, you are not welcome in my country.

Canada is a law-abiding country.  Yours is not.  Stay the fuck out of my country, or I’ll do my utmost to make your stay as embarrassing for both my and your politicians.  I do not consort with torturers, and I will suffer their presence in my nation only under extreme duress.

But I’ll make sure they hear me.

Canada does not torture.

Good Bye.
