An Untold Number of Indigenous Children Disappeared at U.S. Boarding Schools. Tribal Nations Are Raising the Stakes in Search of Answers.
Alleen Brown, Nick Estes, The Intercept

WHEN YUFNA SOLDIER WOLF was a kid, she was made well aware of why her family members only spoke English, and why they dressed the way they did. Her grandfather and other elders used to recount their experiences at boarding schools, where the government sent hundreds of thousands of Indigenous children, from nearly every Indigenous nation within U.S. borders, to unlearn their languages and cultures. “A lot of them were physically abused, verbally abused, sexually abused,” she said.

At the center of the stories were the children who never came home from the Carlisle Indian Industrial School, where her grandfather was a student. “My grandpa used to say, ‘Don’t forget these children. Don’t forget my brother — he’s still buried there,’” Soldier Wolf said. She promised that she would remember.

The school, which opened in 1879 in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, and closed its doors 100 years ago this month, was the United States’ most notorious Indian boarding school and the starting point for more than a century of child removal policies that continue to tear apart Indigenous families today. Carlisle, and hundreds of federally funded boarding schools like it, were key to the U.S. government’s project of destroying Indigenous nations and indoctrinating children with military discipline and U.S. patriotism.

It was Soldier Wolf’s closeness to her family and their stories of abuse at the school that inspired her to become the Northern Arapaho tribal historic preservation officer and work on the return of the children lost at Carlisle.

In June, after about a decade of back-and-forth with the U.S. Army, which owns the Carlisle property, Soldier Wolf stood present as Little Plume, the last of three Northern Arapaho children buried there, was exhumed and sent back to the Wind River Reservation in Wyoming. The remains of two others, 14-year-old Horse and 15-year-old Little Chief, Soldier Wolf’s great uncle, had been returned the previous August.

The Northern Arapaho Tribe is the first to succeed in bringing home children interred at Carlisle’s military cemeteries — but it won’t be the last, and Carlisle is only the tip of the iceberg.

‘Lying to Congress Is a Federal Crime’: Sanders Demands FBI Investigate Whether Kavanaugh Committed Perjury
Jake Johnson, Common Dreams

In a letter to Senate Judiciary Committee chairman Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) on Saturday, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) demanded that the newly reopened FBI investigation into Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh examine both the serious accusations of sexual assault against him and whether he lied to Congress in his testimony.

“In order for this FBI investigation regarding Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s nomination to be complete,” Sanders wrote, “it is imperative the bureau must not only look into the accusations made by Dr. Ford, Deborah Ramirez, and Julie Swetnick, it should also examine the veracity of his testimony before the Judiciary Committee.”

The Vermont senator went on to call on the Senate to not “constrain” the FBI probe to one week, arguing that a truly thorough probe could take longer.

“If you are concerned with a delay in this confirmation process, remember that Senate Republicans refused to allow the Senate to consider Merrick Garland’s nomination to the Supreme Court for nearly a year,” Sanders wrote. “In addition to investigating the accusations made by multiple women, a thorough investigation should include a review of Judge Kavanaugh’s numerous untruthful statements in his previous testimony before Congress.”

As always, I’m with Sam-

It’s not depression really. No suicidal ideation for one thing. Well, even though prospects are grim there’s no excuse for being lazy. Time to lace up those Doc Martens (even hipper on guys) and get to kicking ass.

What was different is that apparently, it worked.

For now.

What’s Cooking This Weekend

Cooler weather is here and the leaves in northern part of the country are starting to turn. The last of the summer harvest is at the green markets which means that pumpkins and squash are plentiful. My daughter like her slow cooker which frees up time for other activities, like leaf watching.

Slow-Cooked Winter Squash with Sage and Thyme

Douse squash in lots of oil and let it slow-roast to golden-deliciousness in this hands-off dish.

Braised Chicken Thighs With Squash and Mustard Greens

Don’t have an acorn squash for this chicken thighs recipe? Use butternut. Not into mustard greens? Use kale, Swiss chard, or spinach.

Kale and Wild Rice–Stuffed Winter Squash

Between the kale, the rice, and the squash, it’s chock-full of fiber, antioxidants, and minerals. And the nutty, salty Pecorino Romano cheese gives it a quiet punch.

Strip Steak with Roasted Acorn Squash and Sprouted Lentils

This steak, with lentils, squash, pesto, almonds, and marinated feta, will be unlike anything you’ve ever tried before. In a good way.

Cast-Iron Roast Chicken with Winter Squash, Red Onions, and Pancetta

Why wouldn’t you throw some veggies around your bird while it roasts? You’ve got a hot pan that’s about to be full of sizzling schmaltz just begging to bathe a mosaic of squash and onions with tons of chicken-y flavor.

Roasted Acorn Squash and Honey

Few side dishes are better on a cool fall evening than roasted acorn squash sweetened with just a little honey and made even mellower with nutmeg and fresh sage leaves.

Friday Evening Wrap

As only he can do it, “Late Night” host Stephen Colbert summarized the Thursday testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee of Dr. Christine Blasey Ford and Judge Brett Kavanaugh in a two part opening monologue.

First the testimony of Dr. Ford who the controlling Republicans promised to accommodate with anything she wanted except for one thing, an FBI investigation. (Today the she finally got her request.)

Next Stephen critiques Judge Kavanaugh. The judge found out that ‘Jeopardy!’ is the place to answer with a question, not a Senate hearing in which you’ve been accused of sexual assault.

The GOP Doesn’t Like The Truth

Up Date 17:30: Under pressure from Senate Republicans Donald Trump has ordered the FBI to conduct an additional background investigation of Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, who faces several sexual misconduct allegations. The FBI investigation will be limited to the current “credible allegation” according to a statement from the Senate Judiciary Committee. This will not change any minds of the Democrats who have said Kavanaugh is a “no” for them based on his ideology and judicial rulings. Depending on the outcome, it may sway the votes of several Republicans who are concerned about the allegations.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Up Date 15:05 : Shortly before 2 PM Senate Judiciary Committee Chuck Grassley (R-IA) called the vote to send Judge Kavanaugh’s name to the full Senate for confirmation. The vote, as expected, was 11 – 10 along party lines. Sen. Jeff Flake (R-AZ) voted in favor of the nomination, with the caveat that the floor vote be delayed to allow for an FBI investigation, if for no other reason than to bridge the partisan divide.
The swing-vote senator announced his support for President Donald Trump’s high court pick Friday morning. But after a dramatic series of closed-door meetings with senators from both parties, he said that he would “only be comfortable” voting yes in the end after the FBI investigates a sexual assault allegation against Kavanaugh.
“I think it would be proper to delay the floor vote for up to but not more than one week in order to let the FBI do an investigation, limited in time and scope,” Flake told fellow senators on the Judiciary Committee. The committee voted to advance Kavanaugh’s nomination.
The latest head-spinning twist may not stop Kavanaugh’s nomination from coming to the Senate floor by this weekend. But Flake’s maneuver drops a political land mine in the lap of Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and the White House, which now must decide whether and how to initiate the FBI inquiry Flake sought.
Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) has joined her GOP colleague, along with several Democrats, to delay the Senate floor vote one week for a reopening of the FBI investigation focused on the allegations of sexual assault.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

It is now evident that the Senate Judiciary Committee will send Judge Brett kavanaugh’s name to the full Senate for confirmation by the end of the day. It does so on a strictly partisan vote which includes the aye vote of Senator Jeff Flake (R-AZ) who confirmed his vote this morning. I have no doubt after yesterday afternoon’s debacle during Judge Kavanaugh’s testimony that the Senate is going to place Donald Trtump’s clone on the Supreme Court bench tomorrow. This will finally give the GOP what it has worked years to do, a court that will rule in their corporate masters’ favor and end a woman’s right to choose. Yes, people will die when the laws and rules that protect workers, investors and our environment and that have been in place for decades are overturned.

But to compound this felony and as an means to their end, the Republicans are putting a lying drunk who has been accused of sexual assault on the bench of the highest court in the land. As I watched Judge Kavanaugh angrily shout his opening statement, my visceral reaction was that his demeanor was not that of a person who should be sitting on the bench, any bench. His threat to avenge his treatment by Democrats was stunning and I have no doubt that he will do just that. It is crystal clear that this man in unfit but the Republicans and supporters of the Trump are choosing to ignore this.

I am not a lawyer but over the years I have been involved in many court proceedings as a witness. When Rachel Mitchell, the sex crimes prosecutor the Republicans hired, started focusing her questioning to the judge on the July 1982 calendar submitted by him as evidence, she was gone after the following recess. According to the committee Republicans, Ms. Mitchell was brought in to get to the truth. But as she honed in on the July 1, 1982 date with the place and names of friends who would be at an underage beer party, Ms. Mitchel was dismissed. The reason is clear: she was getting too close to the truth that the Republicans didn’t want told. It filled in the memory gap of the victim, Dr. Christine Blasey Ford and exposed Judge Kavanaugh for the man he really is, a drunk liar who attempted to rape a 15 year old.

During her testimony, Ford made clear that the event at which she says she was assaulted was a casual get-together before the others (who were older than her and had a later curfew) went to other, bigger parties. Kavanaugh says that the gathering at Timmy’s on July 1 was essentially that.

We noted Thursday, too, that the time frame of this July 1 party fits with Ford’s testimony. She says that six to eight weeks after the alleged assault, she saw Judge working at a store in the area. Judge’s book indicates that he was working at that store for several weeks in early to mid-August.

This is a central point to Ford’s allegation. Kavanaugh denies knowing her, denies being at a party with her. Here is an event in July where he was with several long-standing friends, two of whom were named by Ford and one of whom she’d been going out with. [..]

Mitchell had been stepping in for Republican senators during the day’s questioning, a tactic that helped the majority avoid the spectacle of men grilling a woman about an attack she says she experienced. There was no break in that pattern — until the July 1 question. After that series of questions, Mitchell didn’t speak again.

It pretty obvious that Ms. Mitchell was close to getting at the truth and  had to be stopped and they did. Republicans then turned the rest of the hearing in to an ugly, partisan sham because they couldn’t handle the truth and didn’t want the American people to hear it.

So here we are today facing the grim, frightening fact that the last branch of government that the American people had some faith in is about to be change forever.  Benjamin Franklin when asked if we had a republic or a monarchy, he replied ” a republic if you can keep it.” I suspect Ben is rolling over in his grave, weeping.

Fear of Flying

I don’t have any fear of flying.

What I hate about it is that it’s vastly inconvenient, like riding a bus with 20 times the wait for 20 times the money. Unless you absolutely need to be there that quick (counting wait time mind you) or the oceans are too vast there are always better and more interesting ways to travel.

What I do have is acrophobia, fear of heights. Tall structures, bridges, natural precipices? They cause anxiety of an acute and profound nature, however irrational it is.

Recently I visited the Lincoln Memorial (there’s an unostentatious elevator on the left side before the final flight of steps I found out on the way down) and let me tell you- it’s high. Kids were racing all over as I carefully concentrated on each step and at the top I had to sit and adjust a bit. I’m about 6 feet tall but it seemed longer than that when I stood.

On the other hand it doesn’t incapacitate me. I do incredibly stupid things all the time! Like drive over the Mackinaw Bridge or sneak into the lounge at the Skylon to avoid paying the cover charge for the observation deck. It never gets any better.

I ski, and let me tell you it’s a terrifying experience to be suspended on a swaying, bobbing, twisting park bench 5 stories up with no restraint, especially if you’re sharing the ride with some snot nosed asshole rug rat sporting a snowboard who thinks it’s a damn playground swing.

On the other hand, I ski. Learning to Lift is part of the skill.

You get over it some how. Doesn’t mean you like it. Those who point to a “fear of flying” as indicating some kind of duplicity on the part of Christine Blasey Ford don’t understand anything about it at all.

Kavanaugh Day

Of course I’m watching the hearing/debacle. Early indications are good. Ford is universally described as credible and Kavanaugh seems to be melting down, but I hate him, I hate Trump, and I hate Republicans (don’t like Democrats much either, not because they are too “political”, because they are insufficiently political). The only thing I care about is how much damage. Kick them in the nuts. When they’re on the ground writhing in pain, kick them again.

The contest is not over until someone yields… or dies.

I’ll have a proper summary when the dust settles but remember, it only took two election cycles, 1856 and 1860, for the Whigs to disappear.

And Now… Something Completely Different

Oh, I’m sorry- more Kavanaugh.

Let’s remember the real victims of World War II, the Nazis. After a hard day of gassing Jews and killing Brits, French, Poles, and Russians, all they want is world domination. Is that so much to ask?

Speaking of mindless violence… Moar Futball.
