“…Why my first vote will go to McCain…”

This is a title of a Letter to the Editor.  Ah, you say:  Must be from the offspring of some mega church evangelical in a red state, right?  Well, surprisingly enough, it’s not.  It is from a 2008 graduate of Mumford High School, writing the letter to the Detroit Free Press.

“I am not ashamed to admit that the man getting my vote will be a Republican referred to as “the anti-Christ” by my acquaintances…Since the campaign began, most of my friends and family supported Obama just because of the color of his skin — not because of his politics…”

So, this young African-American woman is going to vote for McCain.  What reasons does she give, other than her statement that initially it was a rebellion?  Here are a couple of reasons she gives (emphasis mine):

The Center Cannot Hold

Some think the US government should avoid violating international laws, the Geneva Convention, our own Code of Military Conduct and jus cogens by not torturing.

Others think some torture of certain people is okay.

The Center:  Allow torture of certain people under limited circumstances.

Some think the constitution is “sacred obligatory on all citizens,” the foundation of our nation, the bulwark of our very liberty, a document which unites all Americans around principles of self-governance, and whose defense is the basis of all oaths of office and the essence of patriotism.

Others think it is “just a piece of paper” to be violated at whim.

The Center:  Follow the constitution some of the time and subvert it at other times.

Some think all government officials, private citizens, and corporations are obligated to follow the law of the land or pay the penalty.

Others think violations of the law should be ignored if high officials say it is okay.

The Center:  Require obedience to the law in most circumstances but sometimes allow lawlessness.

Some say human-caused global warming is the most serious threat to the future of humanity and could well lead to our extermination unless drastic action is immediately undertaken.

Others say global warming is the biggest hoax ever visited on the American people.

The Center:  Everybody recycle and try to turn off unneeded lights.

Some think the US should only go to war on the basis of reliable intelligence which reveals a plausible threat to our national security.

Others think its okay to go to war on the basis of trumped up intelligence in order to further the financial and power interests of an elite minority.

The Center:  Try to go to war only when intelligence proves it’s necessary, but continue to prosecute wars started under other circumstances.

Lay Down Your Bets . . . and Other Thoughts

I’m betting that O wins by 10-15% points.  I think he carries all mountain and west states except UT, WY, ID.  Yes, I think he wins in AZ.  I think he’ll win at least half of the deep south states.  He will lose KY and MS.  The others are a toss up.  He’ll lose in Alaska.  BFD.

Now that’s just horse racing.  My real point is:  no need to pander.  You’re going to win.

But I don’t think O is pandering.  I think we are seeing the real O at last.  And unless (as I suspect it will) the economy really takes a deep six, I suspect an O presidency will be extremely frustrating to progressives. And I doubt the “change” he will bring will be sufficient.

Just some thoughts for a Saturday morning.

Ask Pelosi about Impeachment at Netroots Nation

Nancy Pelosi's Table reports that the Netroots Council of Elders is asking people to submit questions for Pelosi's “open” Q&A at Netroots Nation 2008 in Austin.

Please submits some questions for Pelosi to anwer at Netroots Nation.

Ask The Speaker!
Welcome to the Netroots Nation question submission page for the Saturday morning (July 19, 9:00am) keynote session “Ask The Speaker.” The event empowers citizens to engage America's current House Speaker in substantive discussion about current issues, the legislative process, and how citizens can participate in their government. Instead of simply giving a speech at a podium, Speaker Pelosi will be taking your questions and interacting with convention attendees. The 9 a.m. keynote will be moderated by Gina Cooper, Netroots Nation's Executive Director, and Jeffrey Feldman, author and blogger. But it all begins right now, right here, when you submit your questions and vote on questions submitted by others.

Go there Now and submit your own question or uprate others such as “Why is Impeachment Off the Table“.

Defend the Constitution or Be Sensible?

The dualistic mind is enjoying the on-going debate between “purity trolls” and “sell-outs.”  And most people on both sides of the issue appear to be quite certain of their stance.  Feeling somewhat queasy from the shaky ground under me, I’ve been looking in vain for the solid ground others seem to have found.  All I see is a Sophie’s Choice:  which one do you choose to kill–the Constitution of the United States or any chance of participation in the process?  I don’t know.  But I’m here to urge people to accept that we have a tough decision which cries out for meaningful, respectful debate.  And during this debate, may we keep in mind the most important political question we face–what action gives us the best chance of rescuing the constitution from imminent demise.

The Mendacity of Hope

By Pham Binh via counterpunch.com:  http://counterpunch.com/binh06…

Olbermann has sold out.

I just got done reading Keith Olbermann’s tortured excuse for not calling out Barack Obama on his FISA cave, and frankly, it’s as lame as it can get.  Sorry, Keith, but you’ve sold out to the far right without even realizing it.  Here’s why.

Throughout this campaign, you’ve been doing little or nothing but bash Hillary Clinton for all the wrong reasons.  While the senator supposedly representing New York has undoubtedly made plenty of verbal gaffes and has a poor record of defending the Constitution against the shrub and his gargoyle, you focused your rage exclusively upon her, and for all the wrong things.  One example is her suggestion that the bigot bloc might not vote for Obama, which is true: no matter how much he panders to the far right, no matter how often he bashes blacks to their faces, the bigots in this country simply are not going to vote for a black man for president; they’d sooner cast their ballots for a white woman.  You, however, joined in with those who relentlessly attacked her for pointing out this fundamental truth.

McCain Camp Compares Obama to a Bond Movie Character

Crossposted from Daily Kos

It had to happen sooner or later.

In spite of John McCain being a technological Luddite with no apparent computer skills, the McCain Camp had to prove conclusively that their guy is hip and fully in tune with the American mainstream and pop culture.

What better way than to invoke the image of a movie character that many Americans are familiar with.  So… they compared Barack Obama to ‘Dr. No’ of the James Bond movies.

Does Obama welcome this comparison?  It isn’t as if Obama doesn’t have the flair for the dramatic, as he demonstrated prior to the Texas Primacaucus.  He’s an ‘Urban Cowboy’ himself!

Abrams: McCain: “I really didn’t Love America, Until I was deprived of Her Company”

Developing on “ Verdict with Dan Abrams” tonight, Abrams and a panel are discussing (arguing) about some information about a remark that McCain has made several times:

“I really didn’t love America until I was deprived of Her company.”

The one quoted in the headline above has been repeated by McCain in various versions.

Party Discipline: A Modest Proposal

(crossed from DailyKos)

I have a modest proposal for dealing with Party idiots and apostates:

Eat their babies.

No, just kidding.  This isn’t a Jonathan Swift-style recommendation.  It’s too late for that: the children have grown to adulthood and now stand at the gates of the “fourth estate” spouting the talking-points of the opposition.

Ye gads!  What to do?

If you’re thinking of picking up the ‘phone and chewing off their ear, or dashing off a fevered email of righteous indignations, allow me to offer this suggestions:

Don’t.

Call the HammerHand.

Believe me, no one knows righteous rage any better than I do.  When I read this diary about Tennessee Democrat Fred Hobbs

“Maybe [it’s] the same reason I don’t want to – I don’t exactly approve of a lot of the things he stands for and I’m not sure we know enough about him,” Hobbs said when asked why he thought Davis wasn’t endorsing Obama. “He’s got some bad connections, and he may be terrorist connected for all I can tell. It sounds kind of like he may be.”

I was pissed.  And appalled that, at such a late date and in such a crucial year, a fellow Democrat would stoop to such tactics–for no good purpose.

The diarist helpfully supplied Fred’s email and offered that it might be a good idea to “reach out” (my paraphrase).  Good idea, I thought.  Then I began to read the comments.

I would like to know if this quote is accuratly yours?

“Maybe [it’s] the same reason I don’t want to – I don’t exactly approve of a lot of the things he stands for and I’m not sure we know enough about him,” Hobbs said when asked why he thought Davis wasn’t endorsing Obama. “He’s got some bad connections, and he may be terrorist connected for all I can tell. It sounds kind of like he may be.”

if so then i’m pretty disappointed  you calling yourself a democrate?

the what the fuck is there that you don’t know about our nominee?

get brain racist moron!

if you’re true democrate you’d get your ass in gear to get your party nominee elected

if you’re racist we don’t want your vote sucker!

OBAMA IS NOT A TERRORIST AND YOU DAMN WELL KNOW IT JACKASS. Wasn’t it your Tennessee Democratic Party that was railing against saying the same thing to raise money?

If you don’t want to support him, fine. If you pull shit like that people will notice. And we will take your moronic ass out in your next leadership election. Then again, maybe if you define terrorist as people who don’t put up with pathetic sleaze bags like you, then you might have a point. Get the hell out of our party, and don’t let the door hit you on the way out. I am going to file a complaint with the credentials committee seeking to pull your credential from Denver.

If you’re bored and looking for something to do, you might want to look into joining the KKK, a moron like you would fit in well there. Again, get the fuck out, you’re not a real Democrat if you believe that.

Oh, and the truth: www.fightthesmears.com–the truth, but something tells me a bigot and fool like you isn’t literate. Again, get the hell out of the Democratic Party and don’t let the door hit you on the way out.

Obviously harsh and not likely to be productive.  That objection, when raised, was often countered by something like this:

Wrong (7+ / 0-)

We’ve won, now it’s time to enforce some party discipline. Now, it’s time to unload on pieces of shit like this guy…

Party discipline.  Look, this is no more disciplined than he is–this is mob.

But is this any better?

My email to Mr. Hobbs (14+ / 0-)

Good morning Mr. Hobbs,

I was unpleasantly surprised to see the quote below attributed to you this morning in the press.  Having been misquoted myself by the 4th estate I understand very well what it is like to say one thing, and read them quoting you as having said another.

So, in the interest of clarity, here is the quote I read that the press is claiming you said.  I hope it is inaccurate and you can clarify your statement.

Sincerely,

Well, it’s certainly more polite.  But I’m not sure it’s any more effective.

Here’s my proposal: Unless this guy is in your district or you’re one of his constituents, don’t write to him.

Write to Howard Dean.

Discipline comes from above.  Write to Dean, or write to your own Party Rep, urging them to help get this guy in line.  The only people The Hobbs of the world are beholden to are the people who put them where they are and the people above them in the Party Hierarchy.

The higher-ups really need to hear how the rank and file feel, and they need to know that we’re paying attention.  They need to feel the avalanche of our outrage, because that is what will give them the courage — and the justification — to do something about it, and shut this guy up.

Hobbs isn’t going to listen to you.  In fact, by saying something like this in the first place, he’s telling you: “I don’t care what you think.  I’m an unreconstructed racist who thinks the DLC was already a little too far to the left.”  He. Doesn’t. Care.

Henotlistening.

If you want to bring the hammer down on this guy, talk to the hammerhand: Dean.

I don’t expect many of us will have the self-control to not send a letter or make a call.  But at least try this:  If you feel you have to “reach out and touch” Mr. Hobbs, at least make it a double-dip and call the Doctor, too.

We may have the power, but it’s Dr. Dean who holds the whip.

Of course, I guess there’s always this:

I have been assured by a very knowing American of my acquaintance in London, that a young healthy [DINO] well nursed is at a year old a most delicious, nourishing, and wholesome food, whether stewed, roasted, baked, or boiled; and I make no doubt that it will equally serve in a fricassee or a ragout.

John McCain: The Opacity Of NOPE!

T-Shirts and Stickers Now Available

In this historic election year, the people have a choice of unprecedented clarity. The presidential candidates for 2008 offer a uniquely stark contrast of policy and vision. One has embraced a theme of hope that is inspiring millions and setting a new course for national renewal and unity. He has ignited a grassroots revolution of citizen activists committed to bringing change to an arrogant, unaccountable, dishonest, and incompetent government.

The other is John McCain.

In contrast to Barack Obama’s campaign of optimism and hope, McCain offers a vision that is squarely focused on obstacles. Its opaque negativity fairly precludes it from even being described as a vision at all. It might be more accurately expressed as The Opacity NOPE!

Peace? Nope. Health care? Nope. Fair trade? Nope. Tax equity? Nope. Choice? Nope. Environment? Nope. Get the idea?
