1 Thieves steal infamous Auschwitz death camp sign

AFP

1 hr 57 mins ago

WARSAW (AFP) – Thieves on Friday stole the infamous Nazi German “Arbeit macht frei” sign from the entrance to the Auschwitz death camp in Poland, police said, an act that sparked widespread outrage.

The sign, which means “Work Will Set You Free” in German, has become a symbol of the horror of the camp where about 1.1 million mainly Jewish prisoners died during World War II, most in the notorious gas chambers.

Police said the theft may have been ordered by a private collector or a group of individuals.

1 Forests offer first hope out of climate deadlock

by Richard Ingham, AFP

COPENHAGEN (AFP) – Rich nations Wednesday offered the first sign of progress at a UN climate summit, pledging 3.5 billion dollars to fight deforestation as talks bogged down on procedures and were marred by clashes.

Six countries — Australia, Britain, France, Japan, Norway and the United States — said they would set up a fund to fight the loss of forests, a leading source of the rising temperatures feared to threaten the planet.

In a joint statement, the six governments said they would collectively dedicate 3.5 billion dollars from 2010 to 2012 in what they hoped would be just the starting point for a deforestation fund by wealthy nations.

1 Eyes of the world are on you, UN chief tells climate summit

by Chris Otton, AFP

1 hr 14 mins ago

COPENHAGEN (AFP) – UN chief Ban Ki-moon said world leaders faced a “defining moment in history” as they balanced their nation’s interests with a global clamour to halt the juggernaut of climate change.

With just over three days left to broker one of the most ambitious, yet also fiendishly complex, deals in human history, conference chair Denmark appealed for all sides to embrace the spirit of compromise.

But China and the United States — the world’s two biggest carbon polluters — brushed aside European calls for concessions on emissions reductions, the thorniest issue of all.

1 Walkout heightens failure fears for climate marathon

by Richard Ingham, AFP

COPENHAGEN (AFP) – Developing nations staged a five-hour walkout and China accused the West of trickery as negotiators raced against time Monday to prevent a UN climate summit from ending in catastrophic failure.

While campaigners warned negotiators had five days to avert climate chaos, ministers acknowledged they had to start making giant strides before 120 heads of state arrived for the Copenhagen summit’s climax on Friday.

But their hopes were hit when Africa led a boycott by developing nations of working groups, only returning after securing guarantees the summit would not sideline talks about the future of the Kyoto Protocol.

NICOSIA (AFP) – Thieves dug up the grave of Cyprus’s former president Tassos Papadopoulos during the night and stole his corpse from inside the coffin in a crime that shocked the east Mediterranean island on Friday.

State television interrupted normal programming throughout the day to broadcast live reports and reaction to the desecration.

A member of Papadopoulos’s personal guard found the grave open when he went to light a vigil candle at around 8 am (0600 GMT) as he does every morning, state radio reported.

ABUJA (AFP) – Police in Nigeria carry out hundreds of extra-judicial killings every year and only those who can afford to pay bribes can guarantee their safety from execution or torture, Amnesty International said Wednesday.

“The Nigeria Police Force is responsible for hundreds of extrajudicial executions, other unlawful killings and enforced disappearances every year,” the London-based rights group said in a damning report.

“The majority of cases go uninvestigated and unpunished,” it said.

1 127 killed in spate of Baghdad blasts

by Ammar Karim and Prashant Rao, AFP

1 hr 24 mins ago

BAGHDAD (AFP) – Five massive vehicle-borne bombs rocked Baghdad on Tuesday, killing 127 people, including women and students, and wounding hundreds in the third co-ordinated massacre to devastate the city since August.

The attacks undermined the government’s claims of improved security and came hours before the war-torn country said its general election, the second since the US-led ouster of dictator Saddam Hussein, would be on March 6.

A security spokesman said the attacks — four by suicide attackers driving cars or minibuses and targeting key government buildings — bore “the touch of Al-Qaeda.”

RAWALPINDI, Pakistan (AFP) – Suicide bombers stormed a mosque frequented by army officers in Pakistan’s garrison city of Rawalpindi on Friday leaving 40 people dead in an onslaught of gunfire, grenades and explosions.

Four militants launched the attack, opening fire, tossing grenades and then detonating suicide vests in a crowd gathered for Friday prayers in the city adjoining the capital Islamabad, witnesses and officials said.

Rawalpindi is home to the military’s headquarters and is a frequent target of Taliban insurgents, who have staged a wave of fierce attacks in recent months to avenge military offensives against them across the northwest.

by Khurram Shahzad, AFP

1 hr 43 mins ago

ISLAMABAD (AFP) – A suicide bomber attacked Pakistan’s navy headquarters in the capital Islamabad on Wednesday, killing a naval policeman and injuring 11 others in the latest blast in the insurgency-hit nation.

A young man walked up to a checkpoint at the entrance to the complex and detonated his explosives when challenged by security forces. The blast scattered body parts across the busy city centre road, police and witnesses said.

Islamist insurgents frequently target military installations and attacks have intensified as Islamabad pursues a fierce military offensive, under Western pressure to do more to eliminate Taliban and Al-Qaeda sanctuaries.
