1 Dead president flown home to grief-stricken Poland

by Maja Czarnecka, AFP

Sun Apr 11, 9:44 am ET

WARSAW (AFP) – The body of Poland’s late president arrived back home Sunday as his stunned nation mourned the loss of much of its elite in a jet crash in Russia that investigators said was not due to technical faults.

Draped in a red and white Polish flag, the coffin bearing Lech Kaczynski was carried onto a red carpet at Warsaw Airport, where it was met by his identical twin brother Jaroslaw, a former premier, and a presidential guard of honour.

Before his body was flown home, Poles observed a two-minute silence on the stroke of midday, which was marked by the wailing of sirens.

by Marina Sokolova and Maxim Malinovsky, AFP

2 hrs 13 mins ago

SMOLENSK, Russia (AFP) – A Soviet-era jet carrying Polish president Lech Kaczynski and much of the military and state elite crashed in thick fog in Russia on Saturday killing all 96 people on board in a blazing inferno.

The Tupolev Tu-154 was taking Kaczynski and his wife, the military chief of staff and other top officers, central bank governor, deputy foreign minister, members of parliament and other senior officials to a memorial ceremony for thousands of Polish troops massacred by Russian forces in World War II.

The jet hit treetops in fog as it approached the runway at Smolensk airport in western Russia and broke up in flames, regional governor Sergei Antufiev said.

FDA says studies on triclosan, used in sanitizers and soaps, raise concerns

trilocan scrub

The Food and Drug Administration said recent research raises “valid concerns” about the possible health effects of triclosan, an antibacterial chemical found in a growing number of liquid soaps, hand sanitizers, dishwashing liquids, shaving gels and even socks, workout clothes and toys.

In a letter to a congressman that was obtained by The Washington Post, the FDA said that recent scientific studies raise questions about whether triclosan disrupts the body’s endocrine system and whether it helps to create bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics. An advisory panel to the FDA said in 2005 that there was no evidence the antibacterial soaps work better than regular soap and water.

Triclosan was developed as a surgical scrub for medical professionals. It is also used in pesticides. In recent years, it has been added to a host of consumer products to kill bacteria and fungus and prevent odors. It can be found in everything from kitchen cutting boards to shoes, often packaged with labels that tout “antibacterial” properties.

Most hand sanitizers, such as Purell, use alcohol and do not contain triclosan.

FAQ: Triclosan and Your Health

April 9, 2010 — With the FDA reviewing the antibacterial chemical triclosan, widely found in everyday products such as hand soaps, body washes, toothpastes, cosmetics, toys, clothing, and furniture, should you or shouldn’t you ditch products with this ingredient?

Here are the most frequently asked questions about triclosan, with answers from experts on both sides of the debate, to help you decide.

As is now custom, I’ll try to include the more interesting and pertinent articles that will help the community awareness of their health and bodies. This essay will not be posted anywhere else due to constraints on my time. Please feel free to make suggestions for improvement and ask questions, I’ll answer as best I can.

Editor’s Note: Starting with this essay, due to concerns about fair use, I will only publish the links to the Healthy Recipes.

It Is Not Dying

Turn off your mind

Relax and float downstream

It is not dying

It is not dying

We were talking about the space between us all

And the people who hide themselves behind a wall of illusion

Never glimpse the truth, then it’s far too late when they pass away

We were talking about the love we all could share, when we find it

To try our best to hold it there, with our love

With our love, we could save the world if they only knew

Try to realize it’s all within yourself

No one else can make you change

And to see you’re really only very small

And life flows on within you and without you

1 Australian PM calls ship accident ‘outrageous’

by Madeleine Coorey, AFP

Tue Apr 6, 6:34 am ET

SYDNEY (AFP) – Australia’s leader Tuesday voiced anger over a coal carrier which ran aground and spewed oil over the Great Barrier Reef, as officials probed why the ship ran off course in the world heritage site.

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd called the Chinese-owned Shen Neng 1’s accident “outrageous” and warned the badly damaged ship, which is stranded on a shoal, remained a serious threat to one of the world’s great environmental treasures.

“This remains a serious situation. It remains a serious threat to the Great Barrier Reef,” Rudd said after flying over the crash site off Australia’s northeast.

Tonight’s Sunset Open Thread

Cross-posted at DailyKos and Firefly-Dreaming.

Tonight’s was a very pleasing sunset. I posted last night’s sunset here and today was the opposite of yesterday’s. Yesterday was clear and sunny all day with just enough clouds rolling in to add a little mood to sundown. Today was milky and dull until the very late afternoon and the sky cleared as the sun went down.

I get a little excited when the sun is bright but not to bright for digital photos. It is also coming to the time of year that the sunsets directly into my window. That is when the reflections on the water are most dramatic.

So if you can use a soothing visual, then below the fold is how the sun setting over the Hudson in the Bronx looked tonight.

by Ammar Karim, AFP

The explosions destroyed residential buildings in mostly Shiite neighbourhoods, with Baghdad security spokesman Major General Qassim Atta saying four of the bombs detonated inside the buildings.

“Six bomb attacks in several neighbourhoods of Baghdad occurred, and seven buildings collapsed,” an interior ministry official told AFP, speaking on condition of anonymity.
