Hardscrabble Progress

Structure

begets structure

hope gives birth

to greater hopes

dreams are dreamt

even by beings

existing only

between the breaths

of a dreamer

The present

condenses

out of untold

alternate futures

and drags the past

forward

like a ball and chain

Life is endurable

if only one can find

the beauty

amidst the ugliness

Liberty

for our souls

if you want it

for you

and your children

your grandchildren

generations to come

the future

Freedom

to live

all the colors

of the rainbow

of gender

as well as skin

The walls

around you

between us

will fall

if you stop

believing in them

the beauty and wonder

of a better place

a more just world

a brighter future

the difficulty

having lived in the

having only experienced

that passed as reality

Toward the Cusp

Needs and Reasons

Until you can understand

the need for the learning

the reason for the teaching

will remain obscure

But that won’t stop

can’t deflect

the teacher

from trying

to teach

One day

some day

in the future

probably more distant

than would be ideal

maybe the lesson

will be learned

and we can move on

to other things
