The Lure of the Gold

Entitlement

Shouldn’t entitlement

be an increasing function?

Should not our children

be entitled

to more freedom

liberty, joy

and happiness

than we were?

Shouldn’t their children

if they have any

deserve still more?

Or do you speak

of material things?

Do you look to me

as the reason

you don’t have more?

Pooling

Absolutely Nothing

War

Huh!  Good God, y’all!

What is it good for?

War is good

for making the rich richer

those mongers

who profit

from human suffering

and tragedy

It matters not

if they benefit from victory

by one side or the other

only that War

continue somewhere

forever

And War is good

for spreading

that suffering and tragedy

along with hatred

death and the disintegration

of human society

What more could anyone want?

Breaking Dawn

Songs that voices seldom share

Does it matter

if you hear me

When the morning comes

I’ll be there by your side

–Harry Nilsson

Can you hear me?

Does it matter

if words adapt

to three-part harmony?

Are you waking?

Will you stop here

to share yourself

so everyone can see?

And in the morning

when I am here

I may be spreading

a good thought

And sometime later

when you stop by

will anything of substance

have been taught?

Can you hear me?

Does it matter?

Broken Dreams

Self-absorption

I’ve seen your claims

that you desire

a better world

Why is changing

your behavior

not a footstep

along that path?

Pathway

Life Stories

What would

you tell

the protagonist

of your story

to do

if you could?

Why aren’t you

living your life

so that

those events

could happen?

The deeper question:

Am I?

Imagining the Pain Away

Floating beneath a sea of pain

Focusing

on the point

where the pain

seemed to reside

I aimed my thoughts

to move that point

through my body

to a locus

an inch or two

off the tip

of my nose

where it would hurt

no longer

Wouldn’t it be grand

if our collective

consciousness

could cause

a similar effect

on the blights

humans have inflicted

on this planet?

Tin Ear

Tinnitus

Constant sound

like a million

crickets

chattering

in my head

I experience

no silence

and probably

shall not

until I die

Cyanide

On Being Lazy

The bad part about laziness

is the guilt that insists I

accomplish things in order

to hide that facet

The paradox is that if I

became free to be lazy

I suspect I would get

much more accomplished

Distortion on a Gray Day

Memories

With any luck

the ragged people

discover how to sing

on the countless

gray days

which occupy time

between those occasional

days of sunshine

In a better world

one not consisting

of lies and jest

going away

is not necessary

or required

or even desired

Evaporation

Strange Stigma

Is it so awful to be smart

that I must hide it

so you’ll feel better?

If I mention it

you consider it

a personal attack?

Perish the thought

that anyone feel dumb

compared to me

Who invented these rules?

Someone who isn’t smart

I’ll wager

Partition

Exit

Your anger

does not become you

There is no joy

in viewing it

experiencing it

I refused

to participate

so it was only

a matter of time

until you turned on me

So I walked away

like I have

done before

I’ve always been

very good at that

Great Ball of Fire

Alternate Analysis

Interesting

that you perceive

my state of mind

so utterly

different

than I do

My time is spent

mostly amused

rolling my eyes

at the weirdness

of the human

community

While I bide time

waiting for the

blind to see

the deaf to hear

and the heartless

to start to feel
