Another Tuesday and another two primaries. In Nebraska, it’s Republicans only, Democratic caucus was held on March 5. Although there are three names on the ballot, Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Governor John Kasich (R-OH) having “suspended” their campaigns, real estate mogul Donald Trump is expected to win all 36 delegates. But nothing there is …

At the crosswalk of haters and hate
Stephen E. Thompson is a 45 year-old man who was working as a DJ at a party thrown at Down Under Lounge in Omaha. His attire for the evening consisted of what has been called priestly garb: (a black Catholic shirt with priest collar and skinny skeleton jeans.
Kara Jeslyn Barone, 27, and a friend, both transgender women, needed to use the women’s restroom that night. It turned out that Thompson’s girlfriend, Dahlia Strange, needed to use the restroom at the same time.
These things happen…especially at bars.
Thompson went berserk. He began kicking at the door and tried to force his way in. Barone pushed him out and locked the door in order to keep him out. Strange finished her business and opened the door to leave. Thompson took the opportunity to punch Barone in the face…while calling her a “faggot” and other anti-gay slurs.

Updating: More of the Story
Some stories require follow-up. How else are we going to know how they are progressing? In December I wrote about the treatment of transkids in A Voice for the Future. I’d written about the issue before that as well.
How are doctors treating these children?
They’re prescribing young GID patients with puberty-blocking drugs until age 16, as recommended in guidelines from the Endocrine Society. Then doctors begin lifelong treatment with sex-changing hormones, while monitoring for potential health risks. The guidelines recommend the aid of mental health professionals throughout the process.
A new study about gender non-conformity has been published and even made its way to the mainstream media (Washington Post, CNN Health, The Week, AP. Two articles about gender-variant behavior are in the March issue of Pediatrics. The Advocate picked up the story, but concentrated on a survey from 2010 about how 41% of transpeople have attempted suicide. They did, however, provide a link to LiveScience, which was helpful.

Feinstein Feeding Right Wing Myth of Unemployed Enjoying No Jobs After Senate Vote
The Democratic Party holds the majority in the Senate, but increasing forgets why it exists, as it continues to enact the disaster capitalism scenario of a major party which screws over it constituents.
Today (Wed) the Senate voted against extending expired unemployment benefits, with 11 useless Democrats voting with the Republicans to increase human misery. Oh, and Plantation Blanche Lincoln of Arkansas, who just squeaked by in a Democratic primary because of her No Public Option health care stance ? She couldn’t be bothered to vote at all. http://www.senate.gov/legislat… Senate Vote #190 motion to agree with House amend. to Senate amend. American Workers, State, and Business Relief Act of 2010
At least people like Senator “He’s with us on everything but the war” Lieberman don’t pretend anymore. He was a NO. So were:

Conservatives will lose the Plains next
It’s already happened in the Northeast, and the Pacific Coast. The process is well under way in the Great Lakes region, the mid-Atlantic region, and the Mountain West (excluding the Mormon Belt) . . . yep, except for the South, Americans are turning against conservative values like homophobia, intolerance, and racism in huge numbers, as the overwhelming majorities that Democrats have won in 2006 & 2008, and the overwhelming popularity of President Obama show.
I submit to you that there is area of the US which has only just begun to change though – and that would be the Great Plains states – North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, and Kansas – as well as Montana, which I’m including in this analysis. It’s already been widely reported here, here and elsewhere that RepubliCon strength is overwhelmingly over-represented in the South – defined as the 11 states of the confederacy plus Oklahoma and Kentucky in the first hyperlink from the National Journal. DailyKos blogger Steve Singiser notes in that second link that:
At the Congressional level, the disparities are, if possible, even more stark. In the United States Senate, Republicans control 19 of the 26 seats in the South. Outside the South, Democrats control 53 seats. The GOP controls just 21 seats outside of the South.
What this means, in a nutshell, is that outside of the South, Democrats come very close to controlling three-quarters of the seats in the United States Senate.
The other major area of RepubliCon strength is the Mormon Belt.

Nebraska Court Bans Electric Chair
cross posted from The Dream Antilles
I’m cheering and applauding. Nebraska’s Supreme Court has dragged the state kicking and screaming into the 21st Century by forbidding the state, as a matter of State Constitutional Law, from using the electric chair to kill prisoners sentenced to death. Because electrocution was the only means of execution in the Nebraska statute, the state has reluctantly now joined the nationwide de facto stay on state executions.
Join me in stir.
