Cass Sunstein’s dangerous ideas.

Cass Sunstein has failed to notice that denizens of the tubes frequently quote others whom they despise in order to mock them.  It’s called balance.  Here, for example, is Cass Sunstein himself:

“Momma Cass ‘Dream a Little Dream for Me'” Sunstein thinks web sites like Docudharma should volunteer or be coerced into providing links and ideas to alternative opinions to the ones being expressed by single-minded dharmavillains.

“The best would be for this to be done voluntarily,” said Sunstein, “But the word voluntary is a little complicated and people sometimes don’t do what’s best for our society,” he added.

“The idea would be to have a legal mandate as the last resort….an ultimate weapon designed to encourage people to do better,” Sunstein concluded.

Who here is a rebel?

First, my apologies to all I’ve offended.  All I can say is, it was whiskey and a new medicine speaing.

So, what about the Citizens United case?

In a nutshell, it practically changes federal law very little but overturns a lot of state law.

In terms of federal elections, Citizens United changes the law little and doesn’t mean much.

As for state elections, fasten your seatbelt.

Advocacy organizations will now be able to go into states, such as Michigan, and pound the voters.  Fasten your seat belt.

The real question is, will you give to these advocacy organizations?

That’s what they hope.

Grayson challenges the Supreme Court give away

The Decision

by Alan Grayson — Thu Jan 21, 2010

In a 5-to-4 decision today, the U.S. Supreme Court decided that corporations have the “right” to spend an unlimited amount of money to influence and manipulate federal elections.  The decision overturns more than a century of law and precedent.

[…]

“The Supreme Court has decided to protect the rights of GE, Volkswagen, Lukoil and Aramco, at the expense of our right to good government,” Grayson added.

[…]

Today, Rep. Grayson called for immediate action on his Save Our Democracy bills.  “If we do nothing, then before long, there won’t be Senators from Oklahoma or Virginia, there will be Senators from Citibank and WalMart.  Maybe they will wear insignias on their $500 suits, like NASCAR drivers do.”

Question is, do our Legslators have the guts to make use of our Constitutional “Checks and Balances”?

Can the Legslators actually pass laws to reel in the excesses of the Corporate Rights enabling Court?

These are Dangerous People!

The new “Reds under the Bed”, actually categorized as “domestic extremists”:

Don’t those people look scary to you?

They should.  They are ……. (looking around nervously, whispering) ……. “protesters!”

Gasp!

You know, people who are well informed enough to be angry.  And angry enough to step away from their TV’s and exercise their supposed (ha!) freedom to “Assemble” and “Speechify”.

How dare they.

It was a very sloppy policeman who dropped this “spotter card” at a protest in England.   Very sloppy.   These cards are NOT supposed to be seen by the dangerous public, you know, those people who actually employ and pay the police.   I’m sure if they catch this incompetent, he’ll be soundly punished, perhaps with some nice electrodes to his genitals.    We must ensure he never makes a similar mistake!

And I know, I know, this is in England, very far away from us, but you can bet if England is doing it, the United States is, too.   Been to any protests lately?   Seen all the cops with cameras?   There sure are a lot of them, and you can bet they’re not taking pictures for their Facebook pages.

This kind of highly confidential document – pictured above – is rarely seen by the public.

These so-called “spotter cards” are issued by police to identify individuals they consider to be potential troublemakers because they have appeared at a number of demonstrations.

The photographs are drawn from police intelligence files. This card was apparently dropped at a demonstration against Britain’s largest arms fair in 2005.

H is Mark Thomas, the comedian and political activist. Asked why it was justifiable to put Thomas, who has no criminal record, on this card, the Metropolitan police replied: “We do not discuss intelligence we may hold in relation to individuals.”

Thomas had been acquitted of criminal damage after attaching himself to a bus containing arms traders at a previous fair.

The Met said: “This is an appropriate tactic used by police to help them identify people at specific events … who may instigate offences or disorder.”

The arms fair “is a biannual event that is specifically targeted by known protest groups, who in the past have stated their intention was to shut down or disrupt the event.” As the cards are “strictly controlled”, the officers who lost it were “dealt with”.

On Comment is Free today Thomas writes: “Protesters – or, as the police call them, ‘domestic extremists’ – are the new ‘reds under the bed’.”

I’ve never heard of Mark Thomas, but I’m a fan now.   Here’s what else he said about this discovery:

I was sent the now notorious “police spotter card” through the post. It’s an official laminated card for “police eyes only” and labelled as coming from “CO11 Public Order Intelligence Unit”. The card contained the photographs of 24 anti-arms trade protesters, unnamed but lettered A to X. My picture appeared as photo H. You can imagine my reaction at finding I was the subject of a secret police surveillance process … I was delighted. I phoned my agent and told him I was suspect H. He replied: “Next year we’ll get you top billing … suspect A.”

The Metropolitan police circulated the card specifically for the Docklands biannual arms fair in London to help its officers identify “people at specific events who may instigate offences or disorder”. Which is such a flattering quote I am thinking of having it on my next tour poster. While being wanted outside the arms fair, I was legitimately inside researching a book on the subject, and uncovered four companies illegally promoting “banned” torture equipment. Questions were later asked in the Commons as to why HM Revenue & Customs and the police didn’t spot it. Though, in fairness, none of the torture traders featured on the spotter card.

What exactly was I doing that was so awfully wrong as to merit this attention? Today’s Guardian revelations of three secret police units goes some way to explain the targeting of protesters and raises worrying questions. The job of these units is to spy on protesters, and collate and circulate information about them. Protesters – or, as the police call them, “domestic extremists” – are the new “reds under the bed”.

Many of those targeted by the police have committed no crime and are guilty only of non-violent direct action. So it is worth reminding ourselves that protest is legal. Sorry if this sounds obvious, but you might have gained the impression that if three police units are spying on and targeting thousands, then those people must be up to something illegal.

The very phrase “domestic extremist” defines protesters in the eyes of the police as the problem, the enemy. Spying on entire groups and organisations, and targeting the innocent, undermines not only our rights but the law – frightfully silly of me to drag this into an argument about policing, I know.

Protest is part of the democratic process. It wasn’t the goodwill of politicians that led them to cancel developing countries’ debt, but the protests and campaigning of millions of ordinary people around the world. The political leaders were merely the rubber stamp in the democratic process. Thus any targeting and treatment of demonstrators (at the G20 for example) that creates a “chilling effect” – deterring those who may wish to exercise their right to protest – is profoundly undemocratic.

No police, secret or otherwise, should operate without proper accountability. So how are these three units accountable? Who has access to the databases? How long does information remain in the system? What effect could it have on travel and future employment of those targeted? How closely do these units work with corporate private investigators, and does the flow of information go both ways? Do the police target strikers?

A police spokesman has said that anyone who finds themselves on a database “should not worry at all”. When a spokesman for the three secret units will not disclose a breakdown of their budgets, and two of the three will not even name who heads their operations (even MI6 gave us an initial, for God’s sake), then the words “should not worry at all” are meaningless. Indeed, when the police admit that someone could end up on a secret police database merely for attending a demonstration, it is exactly the time to worry.

This is what we’re up against.

And I am reminded of this quote, which I happened to look up this morning for a response in another post here.   Many seem to have forgotten it especially those in charge:

JFK: “Those who make peaceful revolution impossible will make violent revolution inevitable.”

Why have they forgotten or ignored this?

Do the Public Airways Really Belong to the Public?

The Current Media System favors the Representation of Corporate Interests by our Politicians.

Since the Media Airtime costs so much, Politicians generally have little choice but to give Corporate Speech an Audience, in order to get Elected. … Helloooo Corporate Lobbyists!

Wild Wild Left Radio # 33 – Double Standards – Ariel Under Attack

Subtitled: Double Standards by the Haterz on the Right

Tonight we will give a brief tribute to Teddy Kennedy, but that has and will be covered by everyone, so we want to address issues he surely stood against.

While the Right Wing Mainstream Media calls for murder of abortion doctors, while Senators applaud people standing and saying “I am a right-wing terrorist” and then call them “Real Americans<” one of our own is under attack.

Ariel Attack has been arrested for allegedly vandalizing a Democratic Headquarters in Denver. Legalese prevents us from speaking about or speculating about the case. We will, however be pointing out their attempt to demonize her by attacking her left-wing views and using her free speech on a BLOG.

By proxy, our good friends at Queers Against Obama are being slandered as some “terrorist movement” and a spokesperson named “Mary” will be calling in to speak to that issue.

We have invited Ariel to call in, and one of her supporters, we will call “Ben” and hope that the barrage of idiocy from the right doesn’t frighten them into silence.

Besides the obvious attempt to demonize the Left and equate us with the Real Terrorists of the Right, we will speak to the abuses, humiliation and lack of recognition transgendered people are treated with in the media.

If we do not stand together against being branded as terrorist for upholding the right of equal treatment and free speech under our Constitution, we will lose it.

There is no Left in DC anymore folks, so we on the mean streets must support eachother.

Call for Our Arrest! ~ Wild Wild Left Radio #31

The world has turned upside down, my friends, when Free Speech is being challenged on so many levels that even the people of the so-called Left call for the rounding up of Lefty’s for speaking their mind. Or when the Left celebrates the jailing of the Right for using words we despise. The line is being erased.

Lets face it, I have wished for a good caviar plague to cull the Elite herd, and who hasn’t thought the Demon Cheney should be staked, beheaded, burned, his ashes scattered to the four corners of the Earth, then the ground salted where those lay, so that his Evil can never rise again?  With or without my tongue firmly placed in my cheek, giggling to myself as I keyed that, there are those who are being incarcerated from both the Right and the Left for such utterings, and those who will support such actions for reasons from ideologuery * to personal vendettas against those whom they bear petty malice. “Jail them, harass them, crucify them!”

(* Yes, I reserve the right to make up words as I see fit ©Dianism)

There is a perfect Trifecta of Freedom under Siege under which to discuss these ideas:

Deathers.

Is there a difference between expressing an Opinion, and Lying outright? Does it make a difference if it is under the umbrella of Journalism? If so, why aren’t all of Fox News reporters imprisoned? Could we assuage the fears of the elderly, were they fed truth instead of outright lies?

Hal Turner.

The right-wing frother is behind bars… and while I take personal pleasure in that fact, that is why I am glad there are Laws in place, so people cannot employ their personal prejudices to enforce Laws out of malice.

But, where does the razor fine line between opining and plotting lie? Do we defend David Duke or the KKK’s right to march, under the guise of Free Speech, or do we say Eichman hung for inciting and plotting the Holocaust without ever laying hand to weapon? Do we Police thought crime; things like a Feminist saying they want “Those who blow up Women’s Clinics to face a firing squad of gynecologists?”  Do we stand mute while protesters carry signs calling for the killing of President Obama and his children?

It is a slippery nuanced slope, with valid angles all around.

Impending Civil War?

As the Hate Speech and Gun Toting amps up, will the Right start attacking the Left? As the Economy crashes, will Communities continue to make being Poor illegal, to protect the little they have left against the hungry?

If violence breaks out between factions among us, will it be used by the State to justify Martial Law on us all?

Will ever see collectively that we need to Revolt against the Elites for the good of us all?

Do we disarm our neo-con enemies, only to find ourselves helpless against Martial Law and Prison Camps? Whats a Liberal to do, fight back, or roll over?

We are facing a Perfect Storm. (with the additional pressure of the H1N1 on the horizon)

The time for the discussion about where to draw the lines of our Freedoms is now – for both those with whom we do not agree, and for those we do.

Join us and be Jailed with us!

The Flat Earthers have a Right to their Opinions, But That does NOT make them Right!

If you heard this on the TV, would you sit and think, interesting Opinions?

“The facts are simple,” says Charles K. Johnson, president of the International Flat Earth Research Society. “The earth is flat.

Nobody knows anything about the true shape of the world,” he contends. “The known, inhabited world is flat.

[…]

the stars are about as far as San Francisco is from Boston.”

As shown in a map published by Johnson, the known world is as circular and as flat as a phonograph record. The North Pole is at the center.

Or if you heard this loudly stated Opinion, would you think, “Well, They have a Right to their Opinions”

Mr. Johnson, who called himself the last iconoclast, regarded scientists as witch doctors pulling off a gigantic hoax so as to replace religion with science. He based his own ideas on the Old Testament references to a flat earth

No one likes a Bully!

Bullying is the act of intentionally causing harm to others, through verbal harassment, physical assault, or other more subtle methods of coercion such as manipulation.

[…]

In colloquial speech, bullying often describes a form of harassment perpetrated by an abuser who possesses more physical and/or social power and dominance than the victim.

[…]

The harassment can be verbal, physical and/or emotional.

[…]

Bullies hurt people verbally and physically.

[…]

There are many reasons for that. One of them is because the bullies themselves are or have been the victim of bullying.

[…]

Bullying can occur in any setting where human beings interact with each other.

[…]

Bullying can exist between social groups, social classes and even between countries.

What is Power? pt. 3: Direct Action as Grounds For Thought

The writing of this diary was inspired in part by mwmwm’s jeremiad of Monday.  The point is this: the future is cathected negatively because our institutions have failed to catch up with the real future unfolding before our eyes.

Thus institution-based actions are often ineffective.  Direct action approaches to social problems, however, offer the immediate replacement of power lost through institution-based strategies of “triangulation.”  In relying upon bourgeois, capitalist government in a neoliberal era, we sell out our ideals to that government’s raison d’etre.  Thus anarchist direct action (in such a context) suggests grounds for further thought about methods of political problem-solving (and of redress for lost human rights), even for progressives.

Free Speech in the Mall?

OKay so it’s a little quick hit over at Common Dreams with the headline of : “Bumper Sticker Battle”.

A battle over either free speech or racist exploitation, depending on your perspective, has erupted at North Carolina’s Concord Mills mall, …

Looks like a slam dunk to me.
