ALEC Exposed – Prison Labor

Earlier this year, the Center for Media and Democracy released documents detailing some 800 model legislations crafted by the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC). Included in those documents was the Prison Industries Act, legislation that had already been established in dozens of states across the country.

Like much of the model legislation created by ALEC, this bill is designed to help private corporations increase profits. In this case, those profits come from the use of prison labor. As Mike Elk and Bob Sloan wrote in The Nation, “prison labor for the private sector was legally barred for years, to avoid unfair competition with private companies.”

In addition to this legislation, ALEC crafted numerous pieces of legislation that resulted in harsher sentencing in the courts, meaning more prisoners and longer sentences. That, in turn, means more laborers off which to profit.

In Your Face

Oh brother. This is just … embarrassing.

from Raw Story:

Senator Levin was on the receiving end of a thrown pie during a question-and-answer session on Monday.

The accused pie thrower is Ahlam Mohsen, a 23-year-old senior at Michigan State University and antiwar activist. She was arrested after the incident while attempting to flee and is charged with assault and battery.

Update: Pie thrower facing felony charge for ‘stalking’ senator

An antiwar activist who hit Senator Levin in the face with a dutch apple pie on Monday is facing a felony charge of stalking in addition to misdemeanor charges of battery and assault.

Dumb.

On Slicing Pies, Or, Mystery Fees Cause Retirement “Money Spill”

It’s part two of our “Netroots Nation Goes To Vegas Piano Bar Extravaganza”, and in keeping with tradition that means we are again taking a story request.

This time we won’t be talking about energy security or “climate security”; instead, we’ll discuss retirement security, keeping your money for yourself instead of paying it out in “mystery fees”, and how one of the “usual suspects” is at it again.

And if all that wasn’t enough…we also have pie.

Recipe for the Evening 20100612. Blueberry and Strawberry Icebox Pie

This is a recipe that I invented a couple of years ago, and it works with almost all fruit except ones that are very infirm.  I would not recommend using ripe peaches or blackberries because they, at their prime, are extremely fragile.

It works well with blueberries and commercial strawberries, however.  One could substitute any fairly firm fruit (making allowances for acid and sugar balance) and get a good product.  Since the current host of What’s for Dinner? on the orange site (like I always do when I am the host) did not choose to share that post here, I at least will share my recipe with my cherished friends here at Docudharma.
